    The history of the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Program, which is designed to provide a leading-edge capability to computational aerodynamicists, is traced back to its origin in 1975. Factors motivating its development and examples of solutions to successively refined forms of the governing equations are presented. The NAS Processing System Network and each of its eight subsystems are described in terms of function and initial performance goals. A proposed usage allocation policy is discussed and some initial problems being readied for solution on the NAS system are identified

    Low relaxation rate in a low-Z alloy of iron

    The longest relaxation time and sharpest frequency content in ferromagnetic precession is determined by the intrinsic (Gilbert) relaxation rate \emph{GG}. For many years, pure iron (Fe) has had the lowest known value of G=57 MhzG=\textrm{57 Mhz} for all pure ferromagnetic metals or binary alloys. We show that an epitaxial iron alloy with vanadium (V) possesses values of GG which are significantly reduced, to 35±\pm5 Mhz at 27% V. The result can be understood as the role of spin-orbit coupling in generating relaxation, reduced through the atomic number ZZ.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Toward Collaboration and Community in Student-Faculty Relationships

    Central to support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing college students is the creation of processes through which deaf students and hearing faculty recognize and respect each other’s cultural values. This article describes how conversations from a focus group of deaf students and conversations from a focus group of hearing faculty reflect cross-cultural relatedness and community within a traditional liberal arts university. Higgins’ (1980) conceptualization of interdependence and Palmer’s (1987) notions of relatedness and community served as the framework by which the conversations were analyzed. Communicating in class, using interpreters and notetakers, and establishing identity in the academic community emerged as themes that shaped both students’ and faculty members’ perceptions of deafness. The individual and group insights constructed a collaborative community within the larger context of the academy

    An iridovirus, Apis iridescent virus (AIV), isolated from sick adult specimens of Apis cerana (Hymenoptera) from Kashmir, closely resembles iridescent viruses from Tipula and Sericesthis spp. (TIV and SIV). However, AIV is only distantly related serologically to TIV and SIV and is even moderately related to several other similar viruses that were tested in tube precipitation tests with intact particles. AIV multiplied in Apis mellifera, forming cytoplasmic iridescent crystalline aggregates in several tissues, but unlike all the other iridoviruses tested, it failed to multiply in Galleria mellonella

    The static limit of Lorentz-violating electrodynamics in vacuum and in media is investigated. Features of the general solutions include the need for unconventional boundary conditions and the mixing of electrostatic and magnetostatic effects. Explicit solutions are provided for some simple cases. Electromagnetostatics experiments show promise for improving existing sensitivities to parity-odd coefficients for Lorentz violation in the photon sector.Comment: 9 page

    High accuracy results for the energy levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, up to J=2

    We present a nonrelativistic calculation of the rotation-vibration levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, relying on the diagonalization of the exact three-body Hamiltonian. The J=2 levels are obtained with a very high accuracy of 10^{-14} a.u. (for most levels) representing an improvement by five orders of magnitude over previous calculations. The accuracy is also improved for the J=1 levels of H2+ and D2+ with respect to earlier works. Moreover, we have computed the sensitivities of the energy levels with respect to the mass ratios, allowing these levels to be used for metrological purposes.Comment: 11 page

    Polarimetry of the Type Ia Supernova SN 1996X

    We present broad-band and spectropolarimetry of the Type Ia SN 1996X obtained on April 14, 1996 (UT), and broad-band polarimetry of SN 1996X on May 22,1996, when the supernova was about a week before and 4 weeks after optical maximum, respectively. The Stokes parameters derived from the broad-band polarimetry are consistent with zero polarization. The spectropolarimetry, however, shows broad spectral features which are due intrinsically to an asymmetric SN atmosphere. The spectral features in the flux spectrum and the polarization spectrum show correlations in the wavelength range from 4900 AA up to 5500 AA. The degree of this intrinsic component is low (<0.3 %). Theoretical polarization spectra have been calculated. It is shown that the polarization spectra are governed by line blending. Consequently, for similar geometrical distortions, the residual polarization is smaller by about a factor of 2 to 3 compared to the less blended Type II atmosphere, making it intrinsically harder to detect asphericities in SNIa. Comparison with theoretical model polarization spectra shows a resemblance to the observations. Taken literally, this implies an asphericity of about 11 % in the chemical distribution in the region of partial burning. This may not imperil the use of Type Ia supernovae as standard candles for distance determination, but nontheless poses a source of uncertainty. SN 1996X is the first Type Ia supernova for which spectropolarimetry revealed a polarized component intrinsic to the supernova and the first Type Ia with spectropolarimetry well prior to optical maximum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, macros 'aas2pp4.sty,psfig.tex'.
