A survey of debris trails from short-period comets
We observed 34 comets using the 24 micron camera on the Spitzer Space
Telescope. Each image contains the nucleus and covers at least 10^6 km of each
comet's orbit. Debris trails due to mm-sized or larger particles were found
along the orbits of 27 comets; 4 comets had small-particle dust tails and a
viewing geometry that made debris trails impossible to distinguish; and only 3
had no debris trail despite favorable observing conditions. There are now 30
Jupiter-family comets with known debris trails, of which 22 are reported in
this paper for the first time. The detection rate is >80%, indicating that
debris trails are a generic feature of short-period comets. By comparison to
orbital calculations for particles of a range of sizes ejected over 2 yr prior
to observation, we find that particles comprising 4 debris trails are typically
mm-sized while the remainder of the debris trails require particles larger than
this. The lower-limit masses of the debris trails are typically 10^11 g, and
the median mass loss rate is 2 kg/s. The mass-loss rate in trail particles is
comparable to that inferred from OH production rates and larger than that

The Gut Microbiome Is Altered in a Letrozole-Induced Mouse Model of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have reproductive and metabolic abnormalities that result in an increased risk of infertility, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The large intestine contains a complex community of microorganisms (the gut microbiome) that is dysregulated in humans with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Using a letrozole-induced PCOS mouse model, we demonstrated significant diet-independent changes in the gut microbial community, suggesting that gut microbiome dysbiosis may also occur in PCOS women. Letrozole treatment was associated with a time-dependent shift in the gut microbiome and a substantial reduction in overall species and phylogenetic richness. Letrozole treatment also correlated with significant changes in the abundance of specific Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes previously implicated in other mouse models of metabolic disease in a time-dependent manner. Our results suggest that the hyperandrogenemia observed in PCOS may significantly alter the gut microbiome independently of diet
Electroweak Sudakov Corrections using Effective Field Theory
Electroweak Sudakov corrections of the form alpha^n log^m s/M_{W,Z}^2 are
summed using renormalization group evolution in soft-collinear effective theory
(SCET). Results are given for the scalar, vector and tensor form-factors for
fermion and scalar particles. The formalism for including massive gauge bosons

Development of an orthotropic hole element
A finite element was developed which adequately represents the state of stress in the region around a circular hole in orthotropic material experiencing reasonably general loading. This was achieved with a complementary virtual work formulation of the stiffness and stress matrices for a square element with center circular hole. The assumed stress state provides zero shearing stress on the hole boundary, so the element is suitable for problems involving load transfer without friction. The element has been implemented in the NASTRAN computer program, and sample problem results are presented
Neutrinos with Lorentz-violating operators of arbitrary dimension
The behavior of fermions in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation is
studied. Allowing for operators of any mass dimension, we classify all
Lorentz-violating terms in the quadratic Lagrange density for free fermions.
The result is adapted to obtain the effective hamiltonian describing the
propagation and mixing of three flavors of left-handed neutrinos in the
presence of Lorentz violation involving operators of arbitrary mass dimension.
A characterization of the neutrino coefficients for Lorentz violation is
provided via a decomposition using spin-weighted spherical harmonics. The
restriction of the general theory to various special cases is discussed,
including among others the renormalizable limit, the massless scenario,
flavor-blind and oscillation-free models, the diagonalizable case, and several
isotropic limits. The formalism is combined with existing data on neutrino
oscillations and kinematics to extract a variety of measures of coefficients
for Lorentz and CPT violation. For oscillations, we use results from the
short-baseline experiments LSND and MiniBooNE to obtain explicit sensitivities
to effects from flavor-mixing Lorentz-violating operators up to mass dimension
10, and we present methods to analyze data from long-baseline experiments. For
propagation, we use time-of-flight measurements from the supernova SN1987A and
from a variety of experiments including MINOS and OPERA to constrain
oscillation-free Lorentz-violating operators up to mass dimension 10, and we
discuss constraints from threshold effects in meson decays and Cherenkov

Time-dependent density functional theory on a lattice
A time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) for a quantum many-body
system on a lattice is formulated rigorously. We prove the uniqueness of the
density-to-potential mapping and demonstrate that a given density is
-representable if the initial many-body state and the density satisfy
certain well defined conditions. In particular, we show that for a system
evolving from its ground state any density with a continuous second time
derivative is -representable and therefore the lattice TDDFT is guaranteed
to exist. The TDDFT existence and uniqueness theorem is valid for any connected
lattice, independently of its size, geometry and/or spatial dimensionality. The
general statements of the existence theorem are illustrated on a pedagogical
exactly solvable example which displays all details and subtleties of the proof
in a transparent form. In conclusion we briefly discuss remaining open problems

Radiative Corrections to Longitudinal and Transverse Gauge Boson and Higgs Production
Radiative corrections to gauge boson and Higgs production computed recently
using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) require the one-loop high-scale
matching coefficients in the standard model. We give explicit expressions for
the matching coefficients for the effective field theory (EFT) operators for q
qbar -> VV and q qbar -> phi^+ phi for a general gauge theory with an arbitrary
number of gauge groups. The group theory factors are given explicitly for the
