Harnessing Intellectual Resources in a Collaborative Context to Create Value
The value of electronic collaboration has arisen as successful organisations recognize that they need to convert their intellectual resources into customized services. The shift from personal computing to interpersonal or collaborative computing has given rise to ways of working that may bring about better and more effective use of intellectual resources. Current efforts in managing knowledge have concentrated on producing; sharing and storing knowledge while business problems require the combined use of these intellectual resources to enable organisations to provide innovative and customized services. In this chapter the collaborative context is developed using a model for electronic collaboration through the use of which organisations may mobilse collaborative technologies and intellectual resources towards achieving joint effect.electronic collaboration;value creation;collaborative computing;knowledge management and intellectual resources
Entangled Wavefunctions from Classical Oscillator Amplitudes
In the first days of quantum mechanics Dirac pointed out an analogy between
the time-dependent coefficients of an expansion of the Schr\"odinger equation
and the classical position and momentum variables solving Hamilton's equations.
Here it is shown that the analogy can be made an equivalence in that, in
principle, systems of classical oscillators can be constructed whose position
and momenta variables form time-dependent amplitudes which are identical to the
complex quantum amplitudes of the coupled wavefunction of an N-level quantum
system with real coupling matrix elements. Hence classical motion can reproduce
quantum coherence.Comment: extended versio
New constraints on primordial black holes abundance from femtolensing of gamma-ray bursts
The abundance of primordial black holes is currently significantly
constrained in a wide range of masses. The weakest limits are established for
the small mass objects, where the small intensity of the associated physical
phenomenon provides a challenge for current experiments. We used gamma- ray
bursts with known redshifts detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM)
to search for the femtolensing effects caused by compact objects. The lack of
femtolensing detection in the GBM data provides new evidence that primordial
black holes in the mass range 5 \times 10^{17} - 10^{20} g do not constitute a

Changing women's roles, changing environmental knowledges: evidence from Upper Egypt
The aim of this paper is to investigate the ways in which changing gender roles in a Bedouin community in Upper Egypt, brought about by settlement over the last 20 years on the shores of Lake Nasser, have impacted on the accumulation and development of indigenous environmental knowledges by Bedouin women. The research was carried out among four groups of Ababda Bedouin in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and involved in-depth monthly conversations carried out over a period of 12 months. The main conclusions of the study are that the women of the study area have had to develop new knowledges which, in some cases, are now different from those held by men because of the different economic circumstances in which many find themselves; that these knowledges are fluid, dynamic and ever-changing with their own internal dynamism; and that socially constructed notions of gender are vital in the development process, notions that are sensitive to both men's and women's interests and their interrelationships
Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes (TGFs) Observed with the Fermi-Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor: The First Hundred TGFs
The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Observatory (Fermi) is now detecting ~2.1 TGFs per week. At this rate, nearly a hundred TGFs will have been detected by the time of this Meeting. This rate has increased by a factor of ~8 since new flight software was uploaded to the spacecraft in November 2009 in order to increase the sensitivity of GBM to TGFs. The high time resolution (2 microseconds) allows temporal features to be resolved so that some insight may be gained on the origin and transport of the gamma-ray photons through the atmosphere. The absolute time of the TGFs, known to several microseconds, also allows accurate correlations of TGFs with lightning networks and other lightning-related phenomena. The thick bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation detectors of the GBM system have observed photon energies from TGFs at energies above 40 MeV. New results on the some temporal aspects of TGFs will be presented

Evidence for an Early High-Energy Afterglow Observed with BATSE from GRB980923
In this Letter, we present the first evidence in the BATSE data for a prompt
high-energy (25-300 keV) afterglow component from a gamma-ray burst (GRB),
GRB980923. The event consists of rapid variabilty lasting ~40 s followed by a
smooth power law emission tail lasting ~400 s. An abrupt change in spectral
shape is found when the tail becomes noticeable. Our analysis reveals that the
spectral evolution in the tail of the burst mimics that of a cooling
synchrotron spectrum, similar to the spectral evolution of the low-energy
afterglows for GRBs. This evidence for a separate emission component is
consistent with the internal-external shock scenario in the relativistic
fireball picture. In particular, it illustrates that the external shocks can be
generated during the gamma-ray emission phase, as in the case of GRB990123.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Search for long-lived states in antiprotonic lithium
The spectrum of the (L_i^3 + p-bar + 2e) four-body system was calculated in
an adiabatic approach. The two-electron energies were approximated by a sum of
two single-electron effective charge two-center energies as suggested in [6].
While the structure of the spectrum does not exclude the existence of
long-lived states, their experimental observability is still to be clarified
Sidechain control of porosity closure in multiple peptide-based porous materials by cooperative folding
Porous materials find application in separation, storage and catalysis. We report a crystalline porous solid formed by coordination of metal centres with a glycylserine dipeptide. We prove experimentally that the structure evolves from a solvated porous into a non-porous state as result of ordered displacive and conformational changes of the peptide that suppress the void space in response to environmental pressure. This cooperative closure, which recalls the folding of proteins, retains order in three-dimensions and is driven by the hydroxyl groups acting as H-bond donors in the peptide sequence through the serine residue. This ordered closure is also displayed by multipeptide solid solutions in which the combination of different sequences of amino acids controls their guest response in a non-linear way. This functional control can be compared to the effect of single point mutations in proteins, where the exchange of single amino acids can radically alter structure and functio
