    A New Kinematic Distance Estimator to the LMC

    The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be directly determined by measuring three of its properties, its radial-velocity field, its mean proper motion, and the position angle \phi_ph of its photometric line of nodes. Statistical errors of 2% are feasible based on proper motions obtained with any of several proposed astrometry satellites, the first possibility being the Full-Sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer (FAME). The largest source of systematic error is likely to be in the determination of \phi_ph. I suggest two independent methods to measure \phi_ph, one based on counts of clump giants and the other on photometry of clump giants. I briefly discuss a variety of methods to test for other sources of systematic errors.Comment: submitted to ApJ, 13 page

    UBVJHKLM photometry and modeling of R Coronae Borealis

    We present the results of UBVJHKLM photometry of R CrB spanning the period from 1976 to 2001. Studies of the optical light curve have shown no evidence of any stable harmonics in the variations of the stellar emission. In the L band we found semi-regular oscillations with the two main periods of ~3.3 yr and 11.9 yr and the full amplitude of ~0.8 mag and ~0.6 mag, respectively. The colors of the warm dust shell (resolved by Ohnaka et al. 2001) are found to be remarkably stable in contrast to its brightness. This indicates that the inner radius is a constant, time-independent characteristic of the dust shell. The observed behavior of the IR light curve is mainly caused by the variation of the optical thickness of the dust shell within the interval \tau(V)= 0.2-0.4. Anticorrelated changes of the optical brightness (in particular with P ~ 3.3 yr) have not been found. Their absence suggests that the stellar wind of R CrB deviates from spherical symmetry. The light curves suggest that the stellar wind is variable. The variability of the stellar wind and the creation of dust clouds may be caused by some kind of activity on the stellar surface. With some time lag, periods of increased mass-loss cause an increase in the dust formation rate at the inner boundary of the extended dust shell and an increase in its IR brightness. We have derived the following parameters of the dust shell (at mean brightness) by radiative transfer modeling: inner dust shell radius r_in ~ 110 R_*, temperature T_dust(r_in) ~ 860 K, dust density \rho_dust(r_in) ~ 1.1x10^{-20} g cm^-3, optical depth \tau(V) ~ 0.32 at 0.55 micron, mean dust formation rate [dM/dt]_dust ~ 3.1x10^-9 M_sun / yr, mass-loss rate [dM/dt]_gas ~ 2.1x10^-7 M_sun / yr, size of the amorphous carbon grains <(~) 0.01 micron, and B-V ~ -0.28.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Systematics of RR Lyrae Statistical Parallax III: Apparent Magnitudes and Extinctions

    We sing the praises of the central limit theorem. Having previously removed all other possible causes of significant systematic error in the statistical parallax determination of RR Lyrae absolute magnitudes, we investigate systematic errors from two final sources of input data: apparent magnitudes and extinctions. We find corrections due to each of ~0.05 mag, i.e., ~1/2 the statistical error. However, these are of opposite sign and so roughly cancel. The apparent magnitude system that we previously adopted from Layden et al. was calibrated to the photometry of Clube & Dawe. Using Hipparcos photometry we show that the Clube & Dawe system is ~0.06 mag too bright. Extinctions were previously pinned to the HI-based map of Burstein & Heiles. We argue that A_V should rather be based on new COBE/IRAS dust-emission map of Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis. This change increases the mean A_V by ~0.05 mag. We find M_V=0.77 +/- 0.13 at [Fe/H]=-1.60 for a pure sample of 147 halo RR Lyraes, or M_V=0.80 +/- 0.11 at [Fe/H]=-1.71 if we incorporate kinematic information from 716 non-kinematically selected non-RR Lyrae stars from Beers & Sommer-Larsen. These are 2 and 3 sigma fainter than recent determinations of M_V from main sequence fitting of clusters using Hipparcos measurements of subdwarfs by Reid and Gratton et al. Since statistical parallax is being cleared of systematic errors and since the chance of a >2 sigma statistical fluctuation is <1/20, we conclude that these brighter determinations may be in error. In the course of three papers, we have corrected 6 systematic errors whose absolute values total 0.20 mag. Had these, contrary to the expectation of the central limit theorem, all lined up one way, they could have resolved the conflict in favor of the brighter determinations.     "Boring formal methods" or "Sherlock Holmes deduction methods"?

    This paper provides an overview of common challenges in teaching of logic and formal methods to Computer Science and IT students. We discuss our experiences from the course IN3050: Applied Logic in Engineering, introduced as a "logic for everybody" elective course at at TU Munich, Germany, to engage pupils studying Computer Science, IT and engineering subjects on Bachelor and Master levels. Our goal was to overcome the bias that logic and formal methods are not only very complicated but also very boring to study and to apply. In this paper, we present the core structure of the course, provide examples of exercises and evaluate the course based on the students' surveys.Comment: Preprint.     Oral function and its association with nutrition and quality of life in nursing home residents with and without dementia: A cross-sectional study.

    BACKGROUND: Oral health problems increase with age, and are common in nursing home residents, especially in those with dementia. These problems can lead to tooth loss, diminished oral function and malnutrition. OBJECTIVES: To compare oral function, nutritional status and quality of life (QoL) between residents with and without dementia, and to examine associations between these variables. METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted in four UK nursing homes. Residents aged 65 + with and without dementia were included. Information was collected on demographics, dental status, quality of swallowing and chewing, xerostomia and orofacial pain. During oral examination, information was collected on number of teeth and occlusal units (OU), and functional categories (eg, OU combined with dentures). Multiple linear regression was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Of 84 residents with and 27 without dementia participated. Residents with dementia had significantly fewer teeth (Dementia median (IQR) = 14 (6-21), vs No dementia 22 (12.75-24.25); P = .021), fewer OU (Dementia median (IQR) = 0 (0-3), vs No dementia 4 (0-7); P = .001) and poorer functional categories (Z = -3.283; P = .001), and nutritional status was significantly poorer than those without (Dementia Mean (SD) = 8.3 (2.7), vs No dementia 10.4 (2.0); P = .002). In the regression model, quality of chewing (Coef (95% CI) = -1.27 (-2.22, -0.31); P = .010) was significantly correlated with nutritional status. CONCLUSION: Oral function and nutritional status of residents with dementia was poorer than those without. Almost half of all residents had insufficient oral function, which was negatively associated with QoL and nutritional status

    Spectropolarimetry of R Coronae Borealis in 1998--2003: Discovery of Transient Polarization at Maximum Brightness

    We present an extended optical spectropolarimetry of R CrB from 1998 January to 2003 September. The polarization was almost constant in the phase of maximum brightness, being consistent with past observations. We detected, however, temporal changes of polarization (0.5\sim 0.5 %) in 2001 March and August, which were the first detection of large polarization variability in R CrB near maximum brightness. The amplitude and the position angle of the `transient polarization' were almost constant with wavelength in both two events. There was a difference by about 20 degrees in the position angle between the two events. Each event could be explained by light scattering due to short-lived dust puff occasionally ejected off the line of sight. The flatness of the polarization against the wavelength suggests that the scatterer is a mixture of dust grains having various sizes. The rapid growth and fading of the transient polarization favors the phenomenological model of dust formation near the stellar photosphere (e.g., within two stellar radii) proposed for the time evolution of brightness and chromospheric emission lines during deeply declining periods, although the fading timescale can hardly be explained by a simple dispersal of expanding dust puff with a velocity of 200350\sim 200-350 km s 1^{-1}.     An Error Analysis of the Geometric Baade-Wesselink Method

    We derive an analytic solution for the minimization problem in the geometric Baade-Wesselink method. This solution allows deriving the distance and mean radius of a pulsating star by fitting its velocity curve and angular diameter measured interferometrically. The method also provide analytic solutions for the confidence levels of the best fit parameters, and accurate error estimates for the Baade-Wesselink solution. Special care is taken in the analysis of the various error sources in the final solution, among which the uncertainties due to the projection factor, the limb darkening and the velocity curve. We also discuss the importance of the phase shift between the stellar lightcurve and the velocity curve as a potential error source in the geometric Baade-Wesselink method. We finally discuss the case of the Classical Cepheid zeta Gem, applying our method to the measurements derived with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. We show how a careful treatment of the measurement errors can be potentially used to discriminate between different models of limb darkening using interferometric techniques.Comment: 24 pages, to be published on the Astrophysical Journal, vol. 603 March 200

    An Analysis of the Shapes of Interstellar Extinction Curves. V. The IR-Through-UV Curve Morphology

    We study the IR-through-UV interstellar extinction curves towards 328 Galactic B and late-O stars. We use a new technique which employs stellar atmosphere models in lieu of unreddened "standard" stars. This technique is capable of virtually eliminating spectral mismatch errors in the curves. It also allows a quantitative assessment of the errors and enables a rigorous testing of the significance of relationships between various curve parameters, regardless of whether their uncertainties are correlated. Analysis of the curves gives the following results: (1) In accord with our previous findings, the central position of the 2175 A extinction bump is mildly variable, its width is highly variable, and the two variations are unrelated. (2) Strong correlations are found among some extinction properties within the UV region, and within the IR region. (3) With the exception of a few curves with extreme (i.e., large) values of R(V), the UV and IR portions of Galactic extinction curves are not correlated with each other. (4) The large sightline-to-sightline variation seen in our sample implies that any average Galactic extinction curve will always reflect the biases of its parent sample. (5) The use of an average curve to deredden a spectral energy distribution (SED) will result in significant errors, and a realistic error budget for the dereddened SED must include the observed variance of Galactic curves. While the observed large sightline-to-sightline variations, and the lack of correlation among the various features of the curves, make it difficult to meaningfully characterize average extinction properties, they demonstrate that extinction curves respond sensitively to local conditions.     R CrB Candidates in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Observations of Cold, Featureless Dust with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph

    We observed 36 evolved stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using the low-resolution mode of the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Two of these stars, MSX SMC 014 and 155, have nearly featureless spectral energy distributions over the IRS wavelength range (5.2-35 um) and F_nu peaking at ~8-9 um. The data can be fit by sets of amorphous carbon shells or by single 600-700 K blackbodies. The most similar spectra found in extant spectral databases are of R CrB, although the spectral structure seen in R CrB and similar stars is much weaker or absent in the SMC sources. Both SMC stars show variability in the near-infrared. Ground-based visual spectra confirm that MSX SMC 155 is carbon-rich, as expected for R CrB (RCB) stars, and coincides with an object previously identified as an RCB candidate. The temperature of the underlying star is lower for MSX SMC 155 than for typical RCB stars. The strength of the C_2 Swan bands and the low temperature suggest that it may be a rare DY Per-type star, only the fifth such identified. MSX SMC 014 represents a new RCB candidate in the SMC, bringing the number of RCB candidates in the SMC to six. It is the first RCB candidate discovered with Spitzer and the first identified by its infrared spectral characteristics rather than its visual variability.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters 25 August, 2005, 4 pages (emulateapj), 5 figure

    Anharmonic magnetic deformation of self-assembled molecular nanocapsules

    High magnetic fields were used to deform spherical nanocapsules, self-assembled from bola-amphiphilic sexithiophene molecules. At low fields the deformation -- measured through linear birefringence -- scales quadratically with the capsule radius and with the magnetic field strength. These data confirm a long standing theoretical prediction (W. Helfrich, Phys. Lett. {\bf 43A}, 409 (1973)), and permits the determination of the bending rigidity of the capsules as (2.6±\pm0.8)×1021\times 10^{-21} J. At high fields, an enhanced rigidity is found which cannot be explained within the Helfrich model. We propose a complete form of the free energy functional that accounts for this behaviour, and allows discussion of the formation and stability of nanocapsules in solution.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys.
