    Understanding Interest And Self-Efficacy In The Reading And Writing Of Students With Persisting Specific Learning Disabilities During Middle Childhood And Early Adolescence

    Three methodological approaches were applied to understand the role of interest and self-efficacy in reading and/or writing in students without and with persisting specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in literacy. For each approach students in grades 4 to 9 completed a survey in which they rated 10 reading items and 10 writing items on a Scale 1 to 5; all items were the same but domain varied. The first approach applied Principal Component Analysis with Varimax Rotation to a sample that varied in specific kinds of literacy achievement. The second approach applied bidirectional multiple regressions in a sample of students with diagnosed SLDs-WL to (a) predict literacy achievement from ratings on interest and self-efficacy survey items; and (b) predict ratings on interest and self-efficacy survey items from literacy achievement. The third approach correlated ratings on the surveys with BOLD activation on an fMRI word reading/spelling task in a brain region associated with approach/avoidance and affect in a sample with diagnosed SLDs-WL. The first approach identified two components for the reading items (each correlated differently with reading skills) and two components for the writing items (each correlated differently with writing skills), but the components were not the same for both domains. Multiple regressions supported predicting interest and self-efficacy ratings from current reading achievement, rather than predicting reading achievement from interest and self-efficacy ratings, but also bidirectional relationships between interest or self-efficacy in writing and writing achievement. The third approach found negative correlations with amygdala connectivity for 2 reading items, but 5 positive and 2 negative correlations with amygdala connectivity for writing items; negative correlations may reflect avoidance and positive correlations approach. Collectively results show the relevance and domain-specificity of interest and self-efficacy in reading and writing for students with persisting SLDs in literacy

    Resonant Five-body Recombination in an Ultracold Gas of Bosonic Atoms

    We combine theory and experiment to investigate five-body recombination in an ultracold gas of atomic cesium at negative scattering length. A refined theoretical model, in combination with extensive laboratory tunability of the interatomic interactions, enables the five-body resonant recombination rate to be calculated and measured. The position of the new observed recombination feature agrees with a recent theoretical prediction and supports the prediction of a family of universal cluster states at negative aa that are tied to an Efimov trimer.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Modes of alphabet letter production during middle childhood and adolescence: Interrelationships with each other and other writing skills

    Although handwriting is typically taught during early childhood and keyboarding may not be taught explicitly, both may be relevant to writing development in the later grades. Thus, Study 1 investigated automatic production of the ordered alphabet from memory for manuscript (unjoined), cursive (joined), and keyboard letter modes (alphabet 15 sec) and their relationships with each other and spelling and composing in typically developing writers in grades 4 to 7 (N = 113). Study 2 compared students with dysgraphia (impaired handwriting, n=27), dyslexia (impaired word spelling, n=40), or oral and written language learning disability (OWL LD) (impaired syntax composing, n=11) or controls without specific writing disabilities (n=10) in grades 4 to 9 (N=88) on the same alphabet 15 modes, manner of copying (best or fast), spelling, and sentence composing. In Study 1, sequential multilevel model regressions of predictor alphabet 15 letter production/selection modes on spelling and composition outcomes, measured annually from grade 4 to grade 7 (ages 9 to 13 years), showed that only the cursive mode uniquely, positively, and consistently predicted both spelling and composing in each grade. For composing, in grade 4 manuscript mode was positively predictive and in grades 5-7 keyboard selection was. In Study 2 all letter production modes correlated with each other and one’s best and fast sentence copying, spelling, and timed sentence composing. The groups with specific writing disabilities differed from control group on alphabet 15 manuscript mode, copy fast, and timed sentence composing. The dysgraphia and dyslexia groups differed on copying sentences in one’s best handwriting, with the dysgraphia group scoring lower. The educational and theoretical significance of the findings are discussed for multiple modes and manners of letter production/selection of the alphabet that support spelling and composing beyond the early grades in students with and without specific writing disabilities

    Collisions between tunable halo dimers: exploring an elementary four-body process with identical bosons

    We study inelastic collisions in a pure, trapped sample of Feshbach molecules made of bosonic cesium atoms in the quantum halo regime. We measure the relaxation rate coefficient for decay to lower-lying molecular states and study the dependence on scattering length and temperature. We identify a pronounced loss minimum with varying scattering length along with a further suppression of loss with decreasing temperature. Our observations provide insight into the physics of a few-body quantum system that consists of four identical bosons at large values of the two-body scattering length.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Replication of CNTNAP2 association with nonword repetition and support for FOXP2 association with timed reading and motor activities in a dyslexia family sample

    Two functionally related genes, FOXP2 and CNTNAP2, influence language abilities in families with rare syndromic and common nonsyndromic forms of impaired language, respectively. We investigated whether these genes are associated with component phenotypes of dyslexia and measures of sequential motor ability. Quantitative transmission disequilibrium testing (QTDT) and linear association modeling were used to evaluate associations with measures of phonological memory (nonword repetition, NWR), expressive language (sentence repetition), reading (real word reading efficiency, RWRE; word attack, WATT), and timed sequential motor activities (rapid alternating place of articulation, RAPA; finger succession in the dominant hand, FS-D) in 188 family trios with a child with dyslexia. Consistent with a prior study of language impairment, QTDT in dyslexia showed evidence of CNTNAP2 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association with NWR. For FOXP2, we provide the first evidence for SNP association with component phenotypes of dyslexia, specifically NWR and RWRE but not WATT. In addition, FOXP2 SNP associations with both RAPA and FS-D were observed. Our results confirm the role of CNTNAP2 in NWR in a dyslexia sample and motivate new questions about the effects of FOXP2 in neurodevelopmental disorders

    Ca and Mg isotope fractionation during the stoichiometric dissolution of dolomite at temperatures from 51 to 126 degrees C and 5 bars CO2 pressure

    Natural polycrystalline hydrothermal Sainte Colombe dolomite was dissolved in stirred titanium closed system reactors in aqueous 0.1 mol/kg NaCl solutions at 51, 75, 121, and 126 °C and a pressure of 5 bars CO2. In total, 52, 27, 16, and 12%, respectively, of the dolomite placed in the reactors dissolved into the fluid phase during these experiments. Each experiment lasted from 12 to 47 days and the fluid phase in each evolved towards, but did not exceed, ordered dolomite equilibrium at a pH of 5.9 ± 0.3. All aqueous reactive fluids were undersaturated with respect to all potential secondary phases including calcite and magnesite. The reactive fluid compositions at the end of the experiments had a molar Ca/Mg ratio equal to that of the dissolving dolomite, and the dolomite recovered after the experiments contained only pure dolomite as verified by scanning electron microscopy. The Ca and Mg isotopic ratios of the reactive fluids remained within uncertainty equal to that of the dissolving dolomite in the experiments performed at 51 and 75 °C. In contrast, the Ca isotopic composition of the reactive fluid in the experiment performed at 121 and 126 °C was significantly greater such that Δ44/42Casolid-fluid = − 0.6 ± 0.1‰, whereas that of Mg was within uncertainty equal to that of the dissolving mineral. The equilibrium fractionation factors for both divalent cations favor the incorporation of isotopically light metals into the dolomite structure. Our results at 121 and 126 °C, therefore, are consistent with the one-way transfer of Mg from dolomite to the fluid but the two-way transfer of Ca from and to dolomite as equilibrium is approached during its stoichiometric dissolution. The lack of Mg returning to the dolomite structure at these conditions is attributed to the slow dehydration kinetics of aqueous Mg. As more than 12% of the dolomite dissolved during the 121 and 126 °C closed system experiments, our observations indicate a significant change in the Ca isotopic signature of the dolomite during its stoichiometric dissolution. Moreover, as there is no visual evidence for dolomite recrystallization during this experiment, it seems likely that the resetting of Ca isotopic signatures of carbonate minerals can be readily overlooked in the interpretation of natural systems
