Preliminary Results for LP VPE X-Ray Detectors
Thick epitaxial layers have been grown using Low Pressure Vapour Phase
Epitaxy techniques with low free carrier concentrations . This type of material
is attractive as a medium for X-ray detection, because of its high conversion

Approximate Bayesian computation scheme for parameter inference and model selection in dynamical systems
Approximate Bayesian computation methods can be used to evaluate posterior
distributions without having to calculate likelihoods. In this paper we discuss
and apply an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) method based on sequential
Monte Carlo (SMC) to estimate parameters of dynamical models. We show that ABC
SMC gives information about the inferability of parameters and model
sensitivity to changes in parameters, and tends to perform better than other
ABC approaches. The algorithm is applied to several well known biological
systems, for which parameters and their credible intervals are inferred.
Moreover, we develop ABC SMC as a tool for model selection; given a range of
different mathematical descriptions, ABC SMC is able to choose the best model
using the standard Bayesian model selection apparatus.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure
Voltage controlled terahertz transmission through GaN quantum wells
We report measurements of radiation transmission in the 0.220--0.325 THz
frequency domain through GaN quantum wells grown on sapphire substrates at room
and low temperatures. A significant enhancement of the transmitted beam
intensity with the applied voltage on the devices under test is found. For a
deeper understanding of the physical phenomena involved, these results are
compared with a phenomenological theory of light transmission under electric
bias relating the transmission enhancement to changes in the differential
mobility of the two-dimensional electron gas
2BAD: an application to estimate the parental contributions during two independent admixture events
Several approaches have been developed to calculate the relative contributions of parental populations in single admixture event scenarios, including Bayesian methods. In many breeds and populations, it may be more realistic to consider multiple admixture events. However, no approach has been developed to date to estimate admixture in such cases. This report describes a program application, 2BAD (for 2-event Bayesian ADmixture), which allows the consideration of up to two independent admixture events involving two or three parental populations and a single admixed population, depending on the number of populations sampled. For each of these models, it is possible to estimate several parameters (admixture, effective sizes, etc.) using an approximate Bayesian computation approach. In addition, the program allows comparing pairs of admixture models, determining which is the most likely given data. The application was tested through simulations and was found to provide good estimates for the contribution of the populations at the two admixture events. We were also able to determine whether an admixture model was more likely than a simple split model
Nonlinear electron transport in normally pinched-off quantum wire
Nonlinear electron transport in normally pinched-off quantum wires was
studied. The wires were fabricated from AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures with
high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas by electron beam lithography and
following wet etching. At certain critical source-drain voltage the samples
exhibited a step rise of the conductance. The differential conductance of the
open wires was noticeably lower than e^2/h as far as only part of the
source-drain voltage dropped between source contact and saddle-point of the
potential relief along the wire. The latter limited the electron flow injected
to the wire. At high enough source-drain voltages the decrease of the
differential conductance due to the real space transfer of electrons from the
wire in GaAs to the doped AlGaAs layer was found. In this regime the sign of
differential magnetoconductance was changed with reversing the direction of the
current in the wire or the magnetic field, whet the magnetic field lies in the
heterostructure plane and is directed perpendicular to the current. The
dependence of the differential conductance on the magnetic field and its
direction indicated that the real space transfer events were mainly mediated by

Increase of dissolved inorganic carbon and decrease in pH in near-surface waters in the Mediterranean Sea during the past two decades
Two 3-year time series of hourly measurements of the fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) in the upper 10âm of the surface layer of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea have been recorded by CARIOCA sensors almost two decades apart, in 1995â1997 and 2013â2015. By combining them with the alkalinity derived from measured temperature and salinity, we calculate changes in pH and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). DIC increased in surface seawater by âŒ25â”molâkgâ1 and fCO2 by 40â”atm, whereas seawater pH decreased by âŒ0.04 (0.0022âyrâ1). The DIC increase is about 15â% larger than expected from the equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. This could result from natural variability, e.g. the increase between the two periods in the frequency and intensity of winter convection events. Likewise, it could be the signature of the contribution of the Atlantic Ocean as a source of anthropogenic carbon to the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar. We then estimate that the part of DIC accumulated over the last 18 years represents âŒ30â% of the total inventory of anthropogenic carbon in the Mediterranean Sea
Recent results on GaAs detectors - 137
The present understanding of the charge collection in GaAs detectors with
respect to the materials used and its processing are discussed. The radiation
induced degradation of the charge collection efficiency and the leakage current
of the detectors are summarised. The status of strip and pixel detectors for
the ATLAS experiment are reported along with the latest results from GaAs X-ray
