Investigating the construct of motor competence in middle childhood using the BOT‐2 Short Form : an item response theory perspective

    Get PDF
Purpose: Motor assessments generally produce a single motor competence score based on the general motor ability hypothesis, which states that motor competence is a one-dimensional trait underlying a wide range of motor skills. Yet, it is unclear whether the general motor ability hypothesis holds true in middle childhood, which is marked by an increased participation in sports and other types of physical activity. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the structure of motor competence in middle childhood using a test battery with a large item set. Method: A cross-sectional design was used to collect motor competence data of 2538 children aged 6-11 years. Participants completed the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency—2nd Edition Short Form (BOT-2 SF), which consists of 14 skill items and covers different motor domains. In accordance with the BOT-2 SF manual, point scores were computed for each item. Polytomous Rasch analyses (ie, general partial credit model) were carried out to investigate the construct of motor competence. Results: Rasch analyses revealed different items with unordered threshold parameters, due to ceiling effects. However, after empirically rescaling the category width for each item, follow-up analyses revealed a one-dimensional structure with 12 items. Conclusion: The study provides some evidence of a one-dimensional construct (ie, motor competence) underlying motor assessment in middle childhood. Continued efforts should be made to ensure that valid composite scores are used in motor assessment and to better understand the development of motor competence across childhood and into adolescence and adulthood

LINKING PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH LOCAL SPORT ORGANIZATIONS: IMPLEMENTATION OF AN “ACTIVE SCHOOL COMMUNITY”

    Get PDF
The main purpose of the active school communities project was to act as a starting point for more active school communities throughout seven countries across Europe by strengthening the links between community sport organizations and local schools and provide a low-cost solution to improve physical education and physical activity in schools. Further, opportunities for cooperation were fostered by creating new partnerships between stakeholders that already separately work at the community level to encourage children to move more. Therefore, toolkits were created by the active school communities ERASMUS+ project to promote collaborations between the field of education together with grassroots sport sectors and sport clubs. The aim of this study was a pilot evaluation of these toolkits. A total of 38 members of local sport organizations, 34 members of local schools and 5 national coordinators participated in three parts of the evaluation study. In sum, there are ambivalent results regarding the three toolkits, but the majority of participants supported the aim of the project to create and improve more active school communities. Finally, future recommendations are discussed.  Article visualizations

Motivating Effective Revision Through Teacher Feedback

    Get PDF
This is a study the effectiveness of teacher feedback throughout the writing process and its ability to stimulate student revision. My inquiry focuses on the following questions: 1. What types of written comments result in the most effective revision? 2. Do instructional strategies such as multiple drafting and individual conferencing increase effective revision? I examine ten students\u27 writing folders, coding my feedback into five categories and assessing whether or not students made revisions based on comments. After looking at the percent of change for each category and overall, I then consider whether the revision was positive to determine what types of comments result in the most effective revision. Additionally, I compare the results of students who completed multiple drafts and/or individual conferencing to evaluate the effect of these instructional strategies on revision. Finally, I reflect on the limitations of my study and how these conclusions will influence my future teaching practices

A peripheral warning system for vehicles: Is an LED-Array a suitable display for driving assistance systems?

The thesis investigates a new driving assistance system for vehicles, more specifically, a visual warning system. This display differed from other typical systems in that it was designed to be perceived by the peripheral vision instead of a direct gaze towards it. It consisted of a one-dimensional array of multi-coloured LEDs which were placed under the windshield. Because of the simplistic design, the messages to the driver did not contain any symbols or text. They were solely created from bars of light. These light bars could differ in size, colour, position, brightness and animation. The potential to increase traffic safety and the impact of the display on the driver were investigated in seven studies. The generated knowledge was then used to evaluate whether the concept was fit for implementation in real traffic. In each of the studies, different aspects relevant for the task were investigated. Up until now there was only little research about the effects of LED arrays as displays for warning systems. Previous research generally lacked a holistic appraisal which describes the relevant aspects of human perception and the specific effects of different configurations of this kind of display. This thesis closes this gap by investigating the concept on a very basic level and then iterates towards more practical use cases. In this way, the thesis manages to provide a comprehensive profile of the impact of this LED array. It could be demonstrated that all necessary basic preconditions for the implementation of such a display in the car are met. The results indicate that a display without symbols and text can achieve the same advantages as a classic system with symbols, while distracting the driver less from the street. The new display system in form of an LED array thus has the potential to be less demanding of the driver than classic displays while still enhancing his reactions

The objective of this paper is to explore the potential of the real options approach for analyzing farmers’ choice to switch from conventional to organic farming. Understanding the determinants of this decision is relevant in particular for agricultural policy makers when predicting the response of farmers to support programs. After a brief review of the existing literature on barriers to the adoption of organic farming a theoretical model is presented that allows one to incorporate two main features of the adoption decision, namely irreversibility and uncertainty of the returns. The real options model quantifies investment multiples that trigger the adoption of organic farming. Compared with neoclassical models it suggests an inertia of the respective farming type, i.e. economic hysteresis. In order to find some empirical evidence for that hypothesis we utilize a switching regression model has originally been developed to test for market integration. The econometric model is then applied to aggregated data of conventional and organic farms in Germany and Austria spanning the period from 1982 until 2002. The empirical analysis confirms the reluctance to adopt organic farming due to option-like effects. We conclude that the incentives for adoption of organic farming (e.g. higher prices, direct payments or income stabilization) have to be increased if a higher share of this production type seems desirable.organic farming, real options, switching regression, hysteresis, Farm Management,

Exploring Design Principles and Design Features for a Business Game to Teach the Relationship Between Business Models and Business Processes

    Get PDF
Both business models and business processes represent crucial concepts for research and practice. Since both topics affect each other directly, understanding their connection is essential. However, literature does not provide a teaching concept focusing on their relationship. Using a business game could provide a suitable solution for that purpose due to its features. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to design and evaluate a business game that can be used to teach the relationship between business models and business processes. Towards this end, we apply a design science research approach to build the business game. Based on our identified design requirements, we introduce a set of design principles guiding our design process. Moreover, we demonstrate a prototypical instantiation using design features and evaluate our results with focus groups. Our work contributes to the design knowledge base of business games in the context of business models and business processes
