A Critical Marketing Practitioner in Japan: Philosophy and Marketing Activities of Seiji Tsutsumi
This paper explores some features of marketing activities and marketing thought of a Japanese critical marketing practitioner, Dr. Seiji Tsutsumi. The approach of the paper is biographical. Somewhat paradoxically, the paper finds – in the practices and thoughts of Dr. Seiji Tsutsumi – a refreshingly critical mindset, despite his huge commercial success in retail business in Japan. Similar biographical research should be done in other national contexts, to develop links between practices and critical theories
Critical Marketing in Japan: The Legacy of Fujiya Morishita
This paper explores the tradition of critical marketing studies in Japan, launched by Professor Fujiya Morishita. From his Osaka-based university appointments, Morishita\u27s paradigm criticized disadvantageous aspects of the marketing practices of dominant manufacturers. Based on Marxian economic thinking, his ideas resonated well with the disaffected groups during the 1950-75 high-growth phase of Japan. As the economic context in Japan changed, Morishita\u27s ideas lost some of their validity and appeal. Nonetheless, understanding the contributions of Morishita is important in the overall analysis of the development of marketing knowledge in Japan

Electrochemical and Mechanistic Study of Reactivities of α-, β-, γ-, and δ-Tocopherol toward Electrogenerated Superoxide in N,N-Dimethylformamide through Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer
Scavenging of superoxide radical anion (O2•−) by tocopherols (TOH) and related compounds was investigated on the basis of cyclic voltammetry and in situ electrolytic electron spin resonance spectrum in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quasi-reversible dioxygen/O2•− redox was modified by the presence of TOH, suggesting that the electrogenerated O2•− was scavenged by α-, β-, γ-TOH through proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), but not by δ-TOH. The reactivities of α-, β-, γ-, and δ-TOH toward O2•− characterized by the methyl group on the 6-chromanol ring was experimentally confirmed, where the methyl group promotes the PCET mechanism. Furthermore, comparative analyses using some related compounds suggested that the para-oxygen-atom in the 6-chromanol ring is required for a successful electron transfer (ET) to O2•− through the PCET. The electrochemical and DFT results in dehydrated DMF suggested that the PCET mechanism involves the preceding proton transfer (PT) forming a hydroperoxyl radical, followed by a PCET (intermolecular ET–PT). The O2•− scavenging by TOH proceeds efficiently along the PCET mechanism involving one ET and two PTs
Electrochemical and Mechanistic Study of Superoxide Scavenging by Pyrogallol in N,N-Dimethylformamide through Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer
Scavenging of electrogenerated superoxide radical anion (O2•−) by pyrogallol (PyH3) was investigated on the basis of cyclic voltammetry and in situ electrolytic electron spin resonance spectrum in N,N-dimethylformamide with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quasi-reversible dioxygen/O2•− redox couple was modified by the presence of PyH3, suggesting that O2•− was scavenged by PyH3 through proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) involving two proton transfer and one electron transfer. DFT calculation suggested that the pre-reactive formation of a hydrogen-bond (HB) complex and the subsequent concerted two-proton-coupled electron transfer characterized by catechol moiety in PyH3 is plausible mechanism that embodies the superior kinetics of the O2•− scavenging by PyH3 as shown in the electrochemical results. Furthermore, it was clarified that the three hydroxyl groups of PyH3 promote the formation of HB complex, in comparative analyses using related compounds, resulting in the promotion of the O2•− scavenging
A Spectral Study of the Black Hole Candidate XTE J1752-223 in the High/Soft State with MAXI, Suzaku and Swift
We report on the X-ray spectral analysis of the black hole candidate XTE\
J1752--223 in the 2009--2010 outburst, utilizing data obtained with the
MAXI/Gas Slit Camera (GSC), the Swift/XRT, and Suzaku, which work
complementarily. As already reported by Nakahira et al. (2010) MAXI monitored
the source continuously throughout the entire outburst for about eight months.
All the MAXI/GSC energy spectra in the high/soft state lasting for 2 months are
well represented by a multi-color disk plus power-law model. The innermost disk
temperature changed from 0.7 keV to 0.4 keV and the disk flux
decreased by an order of magnitude. Nevertheless, the innermost radius is
constant at 41 km, where is the
source distance in units of 3.5 kpc and the inclination. The multi-color
disk parameters obtained with the MAXI/GSC are consistent with those with the
Swift/XRT and Suzaku. The Suzaku data also suggests a possibility that the disk
emission is slightly Comptonized, which could account for broad iron-K features
reported previously. Assuming that the obtained innermost radius represents the
innermost stable circular orbit for a non-rotating black hole, we estimate the
mass of the black hole to be 5.510.28 , where the correction for the stress-free inner boundary condition
and color hardening factor of 1.7 are taken into account. If the inclination is
less than 49 as suggested from the radio monitoring of transient jets
and the soft-to-hard transition in 2010 April occurred at 1--4% of Eddignton
luminosity, the fitting of the Suzaku spectra with a relativistic
accretion-disk model derives constraints on the mass and the distance to be
3.1--55 and 2.3--22 {\rm kpc}, respectively. This confirms that the
compact object in XTE J1752--223 is a black hole.Comment: 12 pages including 7 figures and 4 tables, accepted for publication

Toxicoproteomic evaluation of carbon nanomaterials in vitro
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have already been successfully implemented in various fields, and they are anticipated to have innovative applications in medical science. However, CNTs have asbestos-like properties, such as their nanoscale size and high aspect ratio (> 100). Moreover, CNTs may persist in the body for a long time. These properties are thought to cause malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. However, based on conventional toxicity assessment systems, the carcinogenicity of asbestos and CNTs is unclear. The reason for late countermeasures against asbestos is that reliable, long-term safety assessments have not yet been developed by toxicologists. Therefore, a new type of long-term safety assessment, different from the existing methods, is needed for carbon nanomaterials. Recently, we applied a proteomic approach to the safety assessment of carbon nanomaterials. In this review, we discuss the basic concept of our approach, the results, the problems, and the possibility of a long-term safety assessment for carbon nanomaterials using the toxicoproteomic approach.ArticleJournal of Proteomics. 74(12):2703-2712 (2011)journal articl
