    Impact, and its implications for geology

    The publication of seminal texts on geology and on meteoritics in the 1790s, laid the groundwork for the emergence of each discipline as a modern branch of science. Within the past three decades, impact cratering has become universally accepted as a process that sculptures the surfaces of planets and satellites throughout the solar system. Nevertheless, one finds in-depth discussions of impact processes mainly in books on the Moon or in surveys of the Solar System. The historical source of the separation between meteoritics and geology is easy to identify. It began with Hutton. Meteorite impact is an extraordinary event acting instantaneously from outside the Earth. It violates Hutton's principles, which were enlarged upon and firmly established as fundamental to the geological sciences by Lyell. The split between meteoritics and geology surely would have healed as early as 1892 if the investigations conducted by Gilbert (1843-1918) at the crater in northern Arizona had yielded convincing evidence of meteorite impact. The 1950s and 1960s saw a burgeoning of interest in impact processes. The same period witnessed the so-called revolution in the Earth Sciences, when geologists yielded up the idea of fixed continents and began to view the Earth's lithosphere as a dynamic array of horizontally moving plates. Plate tectonics, however, is fully consistent with the geological concepts inherited from Hutton: the plates slowly split, slide, and suture, driven by forces intrinsic to the globe

    The cardiovascular phenotype of adult patients with phenylketonuria

    BACKGROUND: Patients with Phenylketonuria (PKU) are exposed to multiple cardiovascular risk factors, but the clinical significance of these abnormalities is yet unknown. The purpose of this study was to characterize the cardiovascular phenotype in adult patients with PKU by clinical and dietary data, measurements of biochemical markers, and non-invasive examination of vascular functions. RESULTS: Twenty-three adult patients with PKU (age: 18-47 y; 30.8 ± 8.4 y) and 28 healthy controls (age: 18-47 y; 30.1 ± 9.1 y) were included in this study. PKU patients had significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, increased resting heart rate and a higher body mass index. Total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol levels were significantly increased in PKU patients, whereas plasma levels of HDL cholesterol and its subfraction HDL2 (but not HDL3) were significantly decreased. The inflammatory markers C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A protein and the serum oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde were significantly higher in patients with PKU. Venous occlusion plethysmography showed marked reduction in post-ischemic blood flow and the carotid to femoral pulse wave velocity was significantly increased demonstrating endothelial dysfunction and increased vascular stiffness. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the cardiovascular phenotype of adult PKU patients is characterized by an accumulation of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, high levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, endothelial dysfunction and vascular stiffness. These data indicate the need for early cardiovascular risk reduction in patients with PKU

    A calorimetric study of the thermal denaturation of whey proteins in simulated milk ultrafiltrate

    Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study thermal transitions of the following whey proteins and enzymes in milk ultrafiltrate solution: β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin, serum albumin, γ-globulin, apo- and Fe-lactoferrin, lysozyme, ribonuclease, α-chymotrypsin and xanthine oxidase. Denaturation enthalpies (ΔHD), denaturation temperatures (TD) and the half width of the denaturation peaks in DSC thermograms (ΔT½D) were determined and the degree of renaturation was estimated by rescanning previously denatured samples. A fair correlation between the results obtained by DSC and other more classical methods was found in general. However, for some proteins (α-lactalbumin, lysozyme, ribonuclease and xanthine oxidase), which have so far been considered relatively thermostable, calorimetry reveals conformational changes starting at temperatures as low as about 45 °C.     Probing the longitudinal momentum spread of the electron wave packet at the tunnel exit

    We present an ellipticity resolved study of momentum distributions arising from strong-field ionization of Helium at constant intensity. The influence of the ion potential on the departing electron is considered within a semi-classical model consisting of an initial tunneling step and subsequent classical propagation. We find that the momentum distribution can be explained by the presence of a longitudinal momentum spread of the electron at the exit from the tunnel. Our combined experimental and theoretical study provides an estimate of this momentum spread
