16 x 25 Ge:Ga Detector Arrays for FIFI LS
We are developing two-dimensional 16 x 25 pixel detector arrays of both
unstressed and stressed Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors for far-infrared
astronomy from SOFIA. The arrays, based on earlier 5 x 5 detector arrays used
on the KAO, will be for our new instrument, the Far Infrared Field Imaging Line
Spectrometer (FIFI LS). The unstressed Ge:Ga detector array will cover the
wavelength range from 40 to 120 microns, and the stressed Ge:Ga detector array
from 120 to 210 microns. The detector arrays will be operated with multiplexed
integrating amplifiers with cryogenic readout electronics located close to the
detector arrays. The design of the stressed detector array and results of
current measurements on several prototype 16 pixel linear arrays are reported.
They demonstrate the feasibility of the current concept. ***This paper does not

Do Lognormal Column-Density Distributions in Molecular Clouds Imply Supersonic Turbulence?
Recent observations of column densities in molecular clouds find lognormal
distributions with power-law high-density tails. These results are often
interpreted as indications that supersonic turbulence dominates the dynamics of
the observed clouds. We calculate and present the column-density distributions
of three clouds, modeled with very different techniques, none of which is
dominated by supersonic turbulence. The first star-forming cloud is simulated
using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH); in this case gravity, opposed only
by thermal-pressure forces, drives the evolution. The second cloud is
magnetically subcritical with subsonic turbulence, simulated using nonideal
MHD; in this case the evolution is due to gravitationally-driven ambipolar
diffusion. The third cloud is isothermal, self-gravitating, and has a smooth
density distribution analytically approximated with a uniform inner region and
an r^-2 profile at larger radii. We show that in all three cases the
column-density distributions are lognormal. Power-law tails develop only at
late times (or, in the case of the smooth analytic profile, for strongly
centrally concentrated configurations), when gravity dominates all opposing
forces. It therefore follows that lognormal column-density distributions are
generic features of diverse model clouds, and should not be interpreted as

Enhanced surface metallic density of states in icosahedral quasicrystals
Valence and core-level photoemission spectra show that cleaved i-Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystals have a pronounced metallic signature. Spectra from states above EF, populated by increasing the sample temperature, indicate the presence of a shallow pseudogap 0.09 eV above EF. The Al 2p line asymmetry, on the other hand, which indicates metallic behavior, decreases with increasing photoelectron escape depth. This implies a decreasing density of states at EF with increasing distance from the surface, consistent with indications that the density of states near EF in the bulk is reduced. Our results thus help to resolve the apparent contradiction between the theoretical predictions for a bulk pseudogap, and the clear metallic Fermi edges in photoemission
Reconstruction of modified gravity with ghost dark energy models
In this work, we reconstruct the modified gravity for different ghost
and generalized ghost dark energy models in FRW flat universe, which describe
the accelerated expansion of the universe. The equation of state of
reconstructed - gravity has been calculated. We show that the
corresponding gravity of ghost dark energy model can behave like phantom
or quintessence. We also show that the equation of state of reconstructed
gravity for generalized ghost model can transit from quintessence regime
to the phantom regime as indicated by recent observations.Comment: 13 pages, some references and one author are added. Accepted for

Functional evaluation of a homologue of plant rapid alkalinisation factor (RALF) peptides in Fusarium graminearum
The cereal infecting fungus Fusarium graminearum is predicted to possess a single homologue of plant RALF peptides. Fusarium mutant strains lacking FgRALF were generated and found to exhibit wildtype virulence on wheat and Arabidopsis floral tissue. Arabidopsis lines constitutively overexpressing FgRALF, exhibited no obvious morphological or developmental changes, or change in susceptibility to F. graminearum leaf infection. In contrast transient virus-mediated over-expression (VOX) of FgRALF in wheat prior to F. graminearum infection, slightly increased the rate of fungal colonisation of floral tissue. Ten putative Feronia (FER) receptors of RALF peptide were identified bioinformatically in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum). Transient silencing of two wheat FER homoeologous genes prior to F. graminearum inoculation did not alter the subsequent interaction outcome. Collectively, our VOX results show that the fungal RALF peptide may be a minor contributor in F. graminearum virulence but results from fungal gene deletion experiments indicate potential functional redundancy within the F. graminearum genome. We demonstrate that virus-mediated over-expression is a useful tool to provide novel information about gene/protein function when results from gene deletion/disruption experimentation were uninformative
Environment-wide association study to comprehensively test and validate associations between nutrition and lifestyle factors and testosterone deficiency: NHANES 1988-1994 and 1999-2004
PURPOSE
Testosterone (T) plays an important role in men's health and its deficiency is linked with poorer health. However, the role of nutritional and lifestyle factors in T regulation and production remains unclear. The objectives are to comprehensively test the cross-sectional associations of nutritional and lifestyle factors with T deficiency and to validate the associations in the NHANES survey.
METHODS
We performed weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis to examine the association of 173 nutritional and lifestyle factors with T deficiency (total testosterone ≤ 3.5 ng/mL) in NHANES III as the discovery set (mean age 41). We controlled for multiple comparisons with a false discovery rate (FDR) < 5% and replicated in NHANES 1999-2004 (mean age 44).
RESULTS
We identified seven nutritional factors as being inversely associated with T deficiency in NHANES 1999-2004, namely dietary intake of vitamin A, protein, saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, total fats, saturated fatty acid 16:0, and phosphorus. In a multivariable model, only vitamin A intake remained significantly associated with T deficiency (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94-0.99). Principal component analysis suggested that the two principal components, (1) dietary fats, protein, and phosphorous and (2) total vitamin A, may be associated with T deficiency.
CONCLUSION
Our systematic evaluation provided new insight into the modifiable factors that could play a role in the regulation of T production. This study has the potential to contribute to the current body of literature which seeks to formulate a clinical definition of T deficiency after taking into account nutritional and lifestyle factors
Relativistic calculations of the lifetimes and hyperfine structure constants in Zn
This work presents accurate {\it ab initio} determination of the magnetic
dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) hyperfine structure constants for the
ground and a few low-lying excited states in Zn, which is one of
the interesting systems in fundamental physics. The coupled-cluster (CC) theory
within the relativistic framework has been used here in this calculations. Long
standing demands for a relativistic and highly correlated calculations like CC
can be able to resolve the disagreements among the lifetime estimations
reported previously for a few low-lying states of Zn. The role of
different electron correlation effects in the determination of these quantities

Thermodynamics of the Coma Cluster Outskirts
We present results from a large mosaic of Suzaku observations of the Coma
Cluster, the nearest and X-ray brightest hot, dynamically active, non-cool core
system, focusing on the thermodynamic properties of the ICM on large scales.
For azimuths not aligned with an infalling subcluster towards the southwest,
our measured temperature and X-ray brightness profiles exhibit broadly
consistent radial trends, with the temperature decreasing from about 8.5 keV at
the cluster center to about 2 keV at a radius of 2 Mpc, which is the edge of
our detection limit. The SW merger significantly boosts the surface brightness,
allowing us to detect X-ray emission out to ~2.2 Mpc along this direction.
Apart from the southwestern infalling subcluster, the surface brightness
profiles show multiple edges around radii of 30-40 arcmin. The azimuthally
averaged temperature profile, as well as the deprojected density and pressure
profiles, all show a sharp drop consistent with an outward propagating shock
front located at 40 arcmin, corresponding to the outermost edge of the giant
radio halo observed at 352 MHz with the WSRT. The shock front may be powering
this radio emission. A clear entropy excess inside of r_500 reflects the
violent merging events linked with these morphological features. Beyond r_500,
the entropy profiles of the Coma Cluster along the relatively relaxed
directions are consistent with the power-law behavior expected from simple
models of gravitational large-scale structure formation. The pressure is also
in agreement at these radii with the expected values measured from SZ data from
the Planck satellite. However, due to the large uncertainties associated with
the Coma Cluster measurements, we cannot yet exclude an entropy flattening in
this system consistent with that seen in more relaxed cool core clusters.Comment: submitted to ApJ; revised after first referee repor
