An aerial vehicle rotating in gyroscopic fashion about one of its axes has an optical system which scans an area below the vehicle in determined relation to vehicle rotation. A sensing device is provided to sense the physical condition of the area of scan and optical means are associated to direct the physical intelligence received from the scan area to the sensing means. Means are provided to incrementally move the optical means through a series of steps to effect sequential line scan of the area being viewed keyed to the rotational rate of the vehicle

Formulation of a Management Scheme for the Swordfish Fishery of the Eastern Caribbean

During the 1983 season, two U.S. longline vessels initiated the first attempts at the commercial exploitation of swordfish in the Eastern Caribbean. In 1986, the number of U.S. vessels participating in the fishery surpassed 40 with landings of nearly two million pounds per season. The sudden influx of participants and technology to the region has resulted in a variety of user conflicts and associated policy issues. Major areas of concern involve the conservation of a heavily exploited resource and the distribution of benefits which accrue from resource exploitation among the resource-adjacent island states and U.S. fishing operations. This study examines principles of fisheries management, the international legal framework for highly migratory species, and regional responses to highly migratory species management. These experiences are the applied to the Eastern Caribbean situation. Management alternatives which are discussed for the Eastern Caribbean include: regional management; fees and conditions of foreign vessel access; compliance and enforcement; local development; and related issues such as stock conservation, recreational species and by-catch landings. The study indicates that government fisheries treaties may involved issues far removed from fisheries such as strategic interests of the super powers. The island nations of the Eastern Caribbean have the right to the benefits associated with the fisheries resources which occur in their zones of ocean jurisdiction. However, the realization of this goal will depend on regional cooperation, the wise use of scarce resources and long-term commitment

Developing an On-Line Interactive Health Psychology Module.

On-line teaching material in health psychology was developed which ensured a range of students could access appropriate material for their course and level of study. This material has been developed around the concept of smaller 'content chunks' which can be combined into whole units of learning (topics), and ultimately, a module. On the basis of the underlying philosophy that the medium is part of the message, we considered interactivity to be a key element in engaging the student with the material. Consequently, the key aim of this development was to stimulate and engage students, promoting better involvement with the academic material, and hence better learning. It was hoped that this was achieved through the development of material including linked programmes and supporting material, small Java Scripts and basic email, forms and HTML additions. This material is outlined as are some of the interactive activities introduced, and the preliminary student and tutor experience described

Methanation of CO over Ni catalyst: A theoretical study

    Get PDF
Theoretical methods (generalized valence‐bond calculations) were used to examine the bond energies and geometries of numerous species chemisorbed onto Ni clusters representing Ni surface. These results were used to obtain thermochemical information and to examine various mechanisms for the methanation of CO over Ni: CO+3H^(→)_(2(Ni)) CH_4+H_2O. It is found that chemisorbed formyl radicals (Ni–CHO) lead to a favorably appearing chain reaction that is consistent with current experimental results. In addition, we find a chemisorbed C_2 species that may be the catalytically active C_(ad) formed from dissociation of CO
