    Human capital and entrepreneurial success : a meta-analytical review

    The study meta-analytically integrates results from three decades of human capital research in entrepreneurship. Based on 70 independent samples (N = 24,733), we found a significant but small relationship between human capital and success (r(c) = .098). We examined theoretically derived moderators of this relationship referring to conceptualizations of human capital, to context, and to measurement of success. The relationship was higher for outcomes of human capital investments (knowledge/skills) than for human capital investments (education/experience), for human capital with high task-relatedness compared to low task-relatedness, for young businesses compared to old businesses, and for the dependent variable size compared to growth or profitability. Findings are relevant for practitioners (lenders, policy makers, educators) and for future research. Our findings show that future research should pursue moderator approaches to study the effects of human capital on success. Further, human capital is most important if it is task-related and if it consists of outcomes of human capital investments rather than human capital investments; this suggests that research should overcome a static view of human capital and should rather investigate the processes of learning, knowledge acquisition, and the transfer of knowledge to entrepreneurial tasks

    Robust Detection of Point Correspondences in Stereo Images

    A major challenge in 3D reconstruction is the computation of the fundamental matrix. Automatic computation from uncalibrated image pairs is performed from point correspondences. Due to imprecision and wrong correspondences, only an approximation of the true fundamental matrix can be computed. The quality of the fundamental matrix strongly depends on the location and number of point correspondences.Furthermore, the fundamental matrix is the only geometric constraint between two uncalibrated views, and hence it can be used for the detection of wrong point correspondences. This property is used by current algorithms like RANSAC, which computes the fundamental matrix from a restricted set of point correspondences. In most cases, not only wrong correspondences are disregarded, but also correct ones, which is due to the criterion used to eliminate outliers. In this context, a new criterion preserving a maximum of correct correspondences would be useful.In this paper we introduce a novel criterion for outlier elimination based on a probabilistic approach. The enhanced set of correspondences may be important for further computation towards a 3D reconstruction of the scene.

    Liver carcinogenesis in a non-migratory fish: The association with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure

    Field and laboratory studies indicate a strong positive association between exposure to chemical pollutants in aquatic environments and development of neoplasia in fishes. This brief communication reviews some of the more important North American and European studies that have been conducted on this relationship. We then review work conducted on a small nonmigratory estuarine cyprinodontid teleost fish, the mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) in the industrialized Elizabeth River, Virginia USA. Histopathological surveys of mummichogs from variously degraded habitats indicate an association between PAH exposure and development of neoplasia. We have observed non-neoplastic lesions, preneoplasms and hepatic, biliary, exocrine pancreatic and vascular neoplasms in mummichogs inhabiting Virginia and Maryland estuaries. These lesions track a sediment PAH gradient with highest prevalence occurring in fish from PAI-I-contaminated sites in the industrialized portions of the Elizabeth River, Virginia. Liver metabolizing enzyme profiles typical of those observed in carcinogen-challenged laboratory rodents (e.g., depressed phase I enzymes, elevated phase II enzymes, elevated p-glycoprotein) provided additional support of a chemical etiology for the neoplasms occurring in these fish. Long-term laboratory exposure of mummichogs to creosote-contaminated sediments resulted in development of altered hepatocellular foci and hepatic neoplasms. Biomarkers of fish exposure and effects (e.g., CYPlA induction, bile FA C\u27s, DNA adducts, liver histopathology) are presently used in the Puget Sound, Washington USA and Elizabeth River, Virginia USA to track long-term environmental recovery following habitat remediation

    NICMOS Imaging of Molecular Hydrogen Emission in Seyfert Galaxies

    We present NICMOS imaging of broad band and molecular hydrogen emission in Seyfert galaxies. In 6 of 10 Seyferts we detect resolved or extended emission in the 1-0 S(1) 2.121 or 1-0 S(3) 1.9570 micron molecular hydrogen lines. We did not detect emission in the most distant galaxy or in the 2 Seyfert 1 galaxies in our sample because of the luminosity of the nuclear point sources. In NGC 5643, NGC 2110 and MKN 1066, molecular hydrogen emission is detected in the extended narrow line region on scales of a few hundred pc from the nucleus. Emission is coincident with [OIII] and H alpha+[NII] line emission. This emission is also near dust lanes observed in the visible to near-infrared color maps suggesting that a multiphase medium exists near the ionization cones and that the morphology of the line emission is dependent on the density of the ambient media. The high 1-0 S(1) or S(3) H2 to H alpha flux ratio suggests that shock excitation of molecular hydrogen (rather than UV fluorescence) is the dominant excitation process in these extended features. In NGC 2992 and NGC 3227 the molecular hydrogen emission is from 800 and 100 pc diameter `disks' (respectively) which are not directly associated with [OIII] emission and are near high levels of extinction (AV > 10). In NGC 4945 the molecular hydrogen emission appears to be from the edge of a 100 pc superbubble. In these 3 galaxies the molecular gas could be excited by processes associated with local star formation. We confirm previous spectroscopic studies finding that no single mechanism is likely to be responsible for the molecular hydrogen excitation in Seyfert galaxies.Comment: submitted to Ap

    Sub 20 nm Short Channel Carbon Nanotube Transistors

    Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors with sub 20 nm long channels and on/off current ratios of > 1000000 are demonstrated. Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 nm to 1.1 nm grown from structured catalytic islands using chemical vapor deposition at 700 degree Celsius form the channels. Electron beam lithography and a combination of HSQ, calix[6]arene and PMMA e-beam resists were used to structure the short channels and source and drain regions.
