Benchmarking best manufacturing practices: a study into four sectors of Turkish industry
Reports on a benchmarking study conducted to quantify how well companies operating in various sectors of Turkish industry match up to best practice, both in the practices they adopt and in the operational outcomes that result, and to test the hypothesis that the closer a company is to best practice, the more likely it is for that company to achieve higher business performance. The survey conducted in 1997 and 1998 included 82 companies from the Turkish electronics, cement, automotive sectors and part and component suppliers to the appliance industry. For data gathering. employs the Competitive Strategies and Best Practices Benchmarking Questionnaire, supported ly, some follow-up interviews and one-day site visits. Classifies two small groups of companies as leaders and laggers, depending on how close they were to best practice. Shows that the leaders have performed better than the laggers in adopting best manufacturing practices and in the achievement of high performance La,els. The leaders also have achieved substantially higher business performance than the laggers. Furthermore, observes that large-sized companies outperform the rest both in terms of their success in implementing best manufacturing practices and in achieving high operational outcomes and that there is no appreciable difference between industrial sectors in implementing best manufacturing practices and in achieving high operational outcomes
Design and evaluation of a new transaction execution model for multidatabase systems
Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this paper, we present a new transaction execution model that captures the
formalism and semantics of various extended transaction models and adopts them to a
multidatabase system (MDBS) environment. The proposed model covers nested transactions,
various dependency types among transactions, and commit independent transactions.
The formulation of complex MDBS transaction types can be accomplished easily
with the extended semantics captured in the model. A detailed performance model of
an MDBS is employed in investigating the performance implications of the proposed
transaction model. © Elsevier Science Inc. 1997
Determination of Mechanical Properties of Concrete by Destructive and Non-Destructive Experimental Methods
This paper examines the mechanical quality differences of concrete by destructive and non destructive methods according to shape, dimension relationship and cure conditions. Within destructive methods, (compression, tension, bending) different shaped-sized concretes and 28-days-old concrete shear wall samples tested along to find modulus of elasticity. Non destructive methods (ultrasonic pulse velocity test, rebound hammer test) applied same samples along to determine compressive strength and longitudinal wave velocity to obtain result of modulus of elasticity. The aim was to achieve data from applied laboratory test results and cross-checking, all values to enhance concretes compressive strength for potential possibilities
Surface Engineered Angstrom Thick ZnO-sheathed TiO2 Nanowires as Photoanode for Performance Enhanced Dye-sensitized Solar Cells
Cataloged from PDF version of article. This paper presents a systematic study on the effects of angstrom-thick atomic layer deposited (ALD) ZnO sheaths on hydrothermally-grown TiO2 nanowires (NWs) used as photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We designed, synthesized and characterized the samples prepared using different numbers of ZnO cycles and compared their photovoltaic (PV) performances. The device consisting of TiO2 NWs coated with the optimum thickness (two cycles) of ZnO shell exhibits a three-fold increase in efficiency compared to a control reference device. This paper reports results and features that demonstrate the passivation of surface state traps upon deposition of ZnO shells. While this passivation of surface traps provides a reduction in the back-reactions of the surface state mediated electrons (KET trap), it is speculated that ZnO-induced surface band bending (SBB) substantially reduces the recombination rate of the device by reducing the recombination rate of the conduction band (CB) electrons (KET CB). Moreover, an enhancement in the amount of dye uptake for ZnO-coated TiO2 samples is observed and explained with the isoelectric point (IEP) concept. In spite of the excellent PV power conversion efficiencies achieved by the first ZnO cycles, thicker layers impede the electron injection rate, reducing the efficiency of the device by capturing the photogenerated dye electrons in ZnO quantum wells. Here, we investigate the mechanisms contributing to this unprecedented change and correlate them with the enhancement in device efficiency. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2014
Automatic detection of salient objects and spatial relations in videos for a video database system
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Multimedia databases have gained popularity due to rapidly growing quantities of multimedia data and the need to perform efficient
indexing, retrieval and analysis of this data. One downside of multimedia databases is the necessity to process the data for feature extraction
and labeling prior to storage and querying. Huge amount of data makes it impossible to complete this task manually. We propose a
tool for the automatic detection and tracking of salient objects, and derivation of spatio-temporal relations between them in video. Our
system aims to reduce the work for manual selection and labeling of objects significantly by detecting and tracking the salient objects, and
hence, requiring to enter the label for each object only once within each shot instead of specifying the labels for each object in every frame
they appear. This is also required as a first step in a fully-automatic video database management system in which the labeling should also
be done automatically. The proposed framework covers a scalable architecture for video processing and stages of shot boundary detection,
salient object detection and tracking, and knowledge-base construction for effective spatio-temporal object querying.
