Toward Understanding The Subcultural Mosaic: Fragmentation of The Culture and The Symbiotic Interplay of The Market and Subcultures

This study brought to light the need for a more nuanced analysis and approach for understanding the observed tendency toward eclectic, fragmented, and paradoxical subcultures in contemporary society. It was critical to explore the impact of market hegemony and the response of subcultures to this hegemony leading to the development of contemporary subcultural sensibilities. The central purpose of this research was to develop a theory of subculture that accounted for the fragmentation observed in contemporary culture, and how this fragmentation influences subcultures leading to fragmentation within subcultures. To this end, using in-depth interviewing, netnography, and participant observation, I investigated the meanings that subcultural activities have for members of subcultures from the perspective of individuals who participate in music-based subcultures in their everyday lives. I adopted a poststructuralist approach in the interpretation stage to highlight the dynamic interplay between the subjective lived experiences of subcultural members and contemporary sociocultural discourses. This study extends subculture theory by developing and introducing the concept of the ‘subcultural mosaic’. Subcultural mosaic is based on an eclectic subcultural affiliation and a composite subcultural constellation. It is constituted through juxtapositions of several alternative subcultural discourses with each retaining, to some extent, its unique identity and qualities. Moreover, findings reveal that people participating in studied subcultures find the current institutionalizations oppressive and limiting. As they seek solace in membership in subcultures, they also seek membership in multiple subcultures since each represents / inherits the residual discontent from the mass culture, which also maintains the impulse to fragment within each subculture. The underlying purpose expressed is not to exert power over others, but to present alternative modes of life. In this respect, subcultures are venues in which people form several alternative positions and discourses. They resist the given subjectivities through constantly negotiating and reconfiguring cultural and subcultural positions, as well as by presenting new thoughts, imaginations, conceptions, positions, and subjectivities. That is, agency lies in subcultural mosaic

Upper extremity acute compartment syndrome during tissue plasminogen activator therapy for pulmonary embolism in a morbidly obese patient

AbstractIntroductionDeep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are more frequently observed in morbidly obese patients. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a thrombolytic agent which dissolves the thrombus more rapidly than conventional heparin therapy and reduces the mortality and morbidity rates associated with PE. Compartment syndrome is a well-known and documented complication of thrombolytic treatment. In awake, oriented and cooperative patients, the diagnosis of compartment syndrome is made based on clinical findings including swelling, tautness, irrational and continuous pain, altered sensation, and severe pain due to passive stretching. These clinical findings may not be able to be adequately assessed in unconscious patients.Presentation of caseIn this case report, we present compartment syndrome observed, for which fasciotomy was performed on the upper right extremity of a 46-year old morbidly obese, conscious female patient who was receiving tPA due to a massive pulmonary embolism.DiscussionCompartment syndrome had occurred due to the damage caused by the repeated unsuccessful catheterisation attempts to the brachial artery and the accompanying tPA treatment. Thus, the bleeding that occurred in the volar compartment of the forearm and the anterior compartment of the arm led to acute compartment syndrome (ACS). After relaxation was brought about in the volar compartment of the forearm and the anterior compartment of the arm, the circulation in the limb was restored.ConclusionAs soon as the diagnosis of compartment syndrome is made, an emergency fasciotomy should be performed. Close follow-up is required to avoid wound healing problems after the fasciotomy

Food prosumption technologies : A symbiotic lens for a degrowth transition

Prosumption is gaining momentum among the critical accounts of sustainable consumption that have thus far enriched the marketing discourse. Attention to prosumption is increasing whilst the degrowth movement is emerging to tackle the contradictions inherent in growth-driven, technology-fueled, and capitalist modes of sustainable production and consumption. In response to dominant critical voices that portray technology as counter to degrowth living, we propose an alternative symbiotic lens with which to reconsider the relations between technology, prosumption, and degrowth living, and assess how a degrowth transition in the context of food can be carried out at the intersection of human–nature–technology. We contribute to the critical debates on prosumption in marketing by analyzing the potentials and limits of technology-enabled food prosumption for a degrowth transition through the degrowth principles of conviviality and appropriateness. Finally, we consider the sociopolitical challenges involved in mobilizing such technologies to achieve symbiosis and propose a future research agenda.©2023 Sage Publications. Underutilized spectrum constitutes a major concern in wireless communications especially in the presence of legacy systems and the prolific need for high-capacity applications as well as consumer expectations. From this perspective, Terahertz frequencies provide a new paradigm shift in wireless communications since they have been left unexplored until recently. Such a vast frequency spectrum region extending all the way up to visible light and beyond points out significant opportunities from dramatic data rates on the order of tens of Gbps to a variety of inherent security and privacy mechanisms, and techniques that are not available in the traditional systems. Thus, in this paper, we investigate statistical parameters for short-range line- of-sight channels of Terahertz communication. Short-range measurement campaign within the interval of [3cm, 20cm] are carried out between 275GHz to 325GHz range. Path loss model is examined for different frequencies and distances to provide the insight regarding the effect of the operating frequency. Measurement results are provided with relevant discussions and future directions

Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the Morel-Lavellée lesion (MLL),which described as degloving injury of the subcutaneous fatty tissue. Methods: MRI features of fifteen patients in whom the diagnosis of MLL was established by clinically or surgery retrospec-tively analyzed. Results: All the lesions were located in the lower extremities, and 86.6% (n=13) were located at the knee level or above. Alllesions had an anatomic relationship with deep fascia. The majority of the lesions were in either fusiform or crescentic form.60% (n=9) of the lesions showed a well-defined smooth contour. Pseudocapsules were observed in nine patients (60%).46.6% (n=7) of the lesions had a homogeneous signal property. The intralesional hemorrhagic signal was observed in 26.6%(n=4) of the lesions and intra-lesional fat signal in 46.6% (n=7). One patient had fluid-fluid leveling. In two cases, muscleinjury were accompanied by the MLL. In all cases, no associated bone lesion was noted.Discussion and Conclusion: MLL should be considered if a well-circumscribed, crescentic or fusiform subcutaneous masslesion in association with the deep fascia is present, especially in the presence of a history of previous trauma
