    Oil Prices and Firm Returns in an Emerging Market

    This study examines the oil price effect on Turkish stock market as an emerging country on firm level data. After controlling short term interest rate, nominal exchange rate and crude oil price, we find that firms behave differently to a change in oil prices. The findings include these: i) variations in oil prices do not significantly affect Turkish firm returns. Out of 153, only 38 firms are affected significantly by oil price after controlling exchange rate and interest rate; ii) oil prices influence stock returns of Turkish firms, suggesting that under reaction and gradual information diffusion hypotheses may hold. iii) small and middle-sized firms are more affected negatively from oil price changes, where large-sized firms affected more positively. The empirical findings of this study have potential implications and offer significant insights for both practitioners and policy makers

    Value-at-risk Predictions of Precious Metals with Long Memory Volatility Models

    In this paper, we investigate the value-at-risk predictions of four major precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, and palladium) with long memory volatility models, namely FIGARCH, FIAPARCH and HYGARCH, under normal and student-t innovations’ distributions. For these analyses, we consider both long and short trading positions. Overall, our results reveal that long memory volatility models under student-t distribution perform well in forecasting a one-day-ahead VaR for both long and short positions. In addition, we find that FIAPARCH model with student-t distribution, which jointly captures long memory and asymmetry, as well as fat-tails, outperforms other models in VaR forecasting. Our results have potential implications for portfolio managers, producers, and policy makers

    Links Between Commodity Futures And Stock Market: Diversification Benefits, Financialization And Financial Crises

    In this paper, we analyze time-varying correlations between commodity markets and S&P 500 index, employing a recent and novel technique: asymmetric dynamic conditional correlation (ADCC) model. Using weekly data from January 3, 1992 to December 27, 2013, we provide evidence of highly volatile correlations, which substantially increase after the 2007-2008 financial crisis. We also find that conditional correlations and variances are positively linked in overall, which implies deterioration in diversification benefits. Finally, we examine the impacts of financial crises on the conditional correlations and find that external shocks have different effects on the correlations. Our results have potential implications for investors, portfolio managers, commodity producers and policy makers

    Vancomycin versus Linezolid in the Treatment of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Meningitis

    Abstract Background: Vancomycin is the mainstay of treatment for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) meningitis. However, successful outcomes with linezolid have not been reported in a large series of patients. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study to compare vancomycin with linezolid in the treatment of MRSA meningitis. Methods: We extracted data and outcomes for all adult patients (age > 18 years) with culture-proved MRSA meningitis who received vancomycin or linezolid between January 2006 and June 2011. A definite diagnosis of meningitis was based on the isolation of MRSA in at least one cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture and findings in CSF that are typical of the infection. Linezolid was given intravenously (IV) at a dosage of 600 mg q12h and vancomycin IV at 500 mg q6h. Results: A total of 8 patients with MRSA meningitis (5 male, 3 female; age [mean -SD] 61.6 -13.2 years) received vancomycin and 9 patients (7 male, 2 female; age 59.1 -15.6 years) received linezolid. All isolated strains of MRSA were susceptible to both vancomycin and linezolid. The rates of microbiologic success with linezolid or vancomycin, in terms of clearance of MRSA from CSF on day 5, were 7/9 and 2/8 (p = 0.044, Fisher exact test). No severe adverse events occurred in either treatment arm of the study. One-month survival of the patients in whom treatment was successful microbiologically was 2/2 in the vancomycin-treated group and 4/7 in the linezolidtreated group. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data for vancomycin were available for 5/6 treatment failures with vancomycin, and vancomycin MIC values of these five strains were 2 mg/L. Conclusion: Analysis of the findings in the limited cohorts in our study suggests that linezolid is superior to vancomycin for treating MRSA meningitis, especially in cases in which there is a high MIC (2 mg/L) for vancomycin. A clinical study involving larger cohorts may increase the evidence available in relation to this question

    Assessment of the requisites of microbiology based infectious disease training under the pressure of consultation needs

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Training of infectious disease (ID) specialists is structured on classical clinical microbiology training in Turkey and ID specialists work as clinical microbiologists at the same time. Hence, this study aimed to determine the clinical skills and knowledge required by clinical microbiologists.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was carried out between June 1, 2010 and September 15, 2010 in 32 ID departments in Turkey. Only patients hospitalized and followed up in the ID departments between January-June 2010 who required consultation with other disciplines were included.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 605 patients undergoing 1343 consultations were included, with pulmonology, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, dermatology, haematology, and endocrinology being the most frequent consultation specialties. The consultation patterns were quite similar and were not affected by either the nature of infections or the critical clinical status of ID patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of our study show that certain internal medicine subdisciplines such as pulmonology, neurology and dermatology appear to be the principal clinical requisites in the training of ID specialists, rather than internal medicine as a whole.</p

    Tigecycline and Community-Acquired Pneumonia

    Tigecycline is a prototype of a new antimicrobial class known as glycylcyclines. Tigecycline, a derivative of minocycline from the tetracycline group, provides a great advantage with its in vitro activity against gram-negative bacteria producing extended-spectrum betalactamase, Acinetobacter baumannii, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus causing infections. Moreover, tigecycline does not require dose adjustment in many patient groups due to its minimal organ toxicity, which is one of its important characteristics. Tigecycline was approved for indications of complex intra-abdominal infections and complex skin/soft tissue infections by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005 (June) and by European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in 2006 (April); whereas, in Turkey, it was licensed and became clinically available in 2007 (February) for its use in the same indications. After the approval of tigecycline in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in adults, it was also approved for the same indication in our country in 2010 (March)
