    A Mobile App to Aid Smoking Cessation: Preliminary Evaluation of SmokeFree28

    Background: Little is known about the effectiveness of mobile apps in aiding smoking cessation or their validity for automated collection of data on smoking cessation outcomes. Objective: We conducted a preliminary evaluation of SF28 (SF28 is the name of the app, short for SmokeFree28)—an app aimed at helping smokers to be smoke-free for 28 days. / Methods: Data on sociodemographic characteristics, smoking history, number of logins, and abstinence at each login were uploaded to a server from SF28 between August 2012 and August 2013. Users were included if they were aged 16 years or over, smoked cigarettes at the time of registration, had set a quit date, and used the app at least once on or after their quit date. Their characteristics were compared with data from a representative sample of smokers trying to stop smoking in England. The percentage of users recording 28 days of abstinence was compared with a value of 15% estimated for unaided quitting. Correlations were assessed between recorded abstinence for 28 days and well-established abstinence predictors. / Results: A total of 1170 users met the inclusion criteria. Compared with smokers trying to quit in England, they had higher consumption, and were younger, more likely to be female, and had a non-manual rather than manual occupation. In total, 18.9% (95% CI 16.7-21.1) were recorded as being abstinent from smoking for 28 days or longer. The mean number of logins was 8.5 (SD 9.0). The proportion recording abstinence for 28 days or longer was higher in users who were older, in a non-manual occupation, and in those using a smoking cessation medication. / Conclusions: The recorded 28-day abstinence rates from the mobile app, SF28, suggest that it may help some smokers to stop smoking. Further evaluation by means of a randomized trial appears to be warranted

    Temporal Evaluation of Corn Respiration Rates Using Pressure Sensors

    High respiration rate of a grain indicates faster degradation of its dry matter. Proper grain management requires chronological and precise measurements of carbon dioxide evolved from grain respiration during the postharvest storage duration. Therefore the main goal of this research was to develop a new technique that evaluates temporal corn respiration rate using pressure sensors. It was based on measuring pressure drop associated with the grain respiration in a closed container and using it to calculate the grain respiration rates. Dry corn (Zea Mays L.) was procured from a local farmer and stored at 4ÂșC. Corn rewetting technique was applied A set of eighteen pressure sensor modules were used throughout the course of this study. These modules determine gas productivity for various biological cultures through measuring and recording the cumulative pressure as well as temperatures. A 150-gram subsample from each moisture level was placed in a glass bottle along with two NaOH vials as well as one silica gel vial. The effects of corn storage temperature (23, 35, and 45oC) and initial moisture content (12.9, 14.8, 17.0, 18.8, and 20.7% w.b) on the cumulative respiration and respiration rate were studied for duration of nine days. The pressure sensor method was found to be reliable in measuring corn respiration rate as affected by the tested parameters. The highest cumulative respiration of 2.625 g-CO2/kg-corn was observed at the moisture content of 18.8% and the medium temperature level of 35oC after nine days. It was also observed that the respiration rate increased with increases in temperature and peaked out at a temperature of 35°C. Respiration rates reached their maximum values of 0.199, 0.755, 0.987, and 1.147 g-CO2/kg-corn.d under the medium temperature level of 35oC and the moisture contents of 14.8% (5th day), 17.0% (5th day), 18.8% (3rd day), and 20.9% (2nd day), respectively. Additionally, an empirical equation to predict the cumulative respiration of corn as affected by storage temperature, moisture content, and storage duration with an adjusted coefficient of determination value of 0.80. This study recommended that respiration of freshly harvested corn exposed to natural air drying samples should be evaluated

    A framework for the introduction of knowledge management within an engineering environment

    This research is based on real issues that have been recognised within the global organisation, Rolls-Royce. The first aim concerned an issue that many companies face, the difficulty that employees face in locating the knowledge and information they require, especially in larger organisations. The developed solution of an Information Map proved to be a success in providing people within the Submarines business with the location of' Configuration Management information. The concept of the Information Map is one that can be adopted by any business as the stages in the tools development have been well documented within Chapters Four, Five and Six. Analysis of the success of the Information Map led to the derivation of 10 lessons learned. These were then verified in a second case study of an intranet development. The second aim of the research was to create a Knowledge Management framework that could be adapted by companies looking to invest in Knowledge Management and provide them with a guide to use. This framework was built from the lessons learned from the Information Map and from other best practice derived from available literature and within Rolls-Royce. The work conducted within the Support business tries to fill in gaps in current research by offering companies a new approach to Knowledge Management, which was based upon the way that industries work today. The creation of the Knowledge Management framework simplifies the work conducted and offers practitioners an easy, high-level approach to the adoption of Knowledge Management by grouping the process into ten steps. This is presented in a fashion that is easy to follow and ultimately offers a guide to make the best use of the resources and budget available to Knowledge Management practitioners. Overall the research addresses the 'real' issues faced by Knowledge Management practitioners. The main contributions to the Knowledge Management domain are the Information Map, action research approach, implementation of Knowledge Management tools for the users needs and a Framework as a guide for industry

    WIMAX LINK PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS FOR WIRELESS AUTOMATION APPLICATIONS

    Wireless broadband access technologies are rapidly growing and a corresponding growth in the demand of its applicability transcends faster internet access, high speed file download and different multimedia applications such as voice calls, video streaming, teleconferencing etc, to industrial operations and automation. Industrial and automation systems perform operations that requires the transmission of real time information from one end to another through high-performance wireless broadband communication links. WiMAX, based on IEEE 802.16 standard is one of the wireless broadband access technologies that has overcome location, speed, and access limitations of the traditional Digital Subscriber Line and Wireless Fidelity, and offers high efficient data rates. This thesis presents detailed analysis of operational WiMAX link performance parameters such as throughput, latency, jitter, and packet loss for suitable applicability in wireless automation applications. The theoretical background of components and functionalities of WiMAX physical and MAC layers as well as the network performance features are presented. The equipment deployed for this field experiment are Alvarion BreeZeMAX 3000 fixed WiMAX equipment operating in the 3.5 GHz licensed band with channel bandwidth of 3.5 MHz. The deployed equipment consisting of MBSE and CPE are installed and commissioned prior to field tests. Several measurements are made in three link quality scenarios (sufficient, good and excellent) in the University of Vaasa campus.     Cross-Platform Comparison of Untargeted and Targeted Lipidomics Approaches on Aging Mouse Plasma.

    Lipidomics - the global assessment of lipids - can be performed using a variety of mass spectrometry (MS)-based approaches. However, choosing the optimal approach in terms of lipid coverage, robustness and throughput can be a challenging task. Here, we compare a novel targeted quantitative lipidomics platform known as the Lipidyzer to a conventional untargeted liquid chromatography (LC)-MS approach. We find that both platforms are efficient in profiling more than 300 lipids across 11 lipid classes in mouse plasma with precision and accuracy below 20% for most lipids. While the untargeted and targeted platforms detect similar numbers of lipids, the former identifies a broader range of lipid classes and can unambiguously identify all three fatty acids in triacylglycerols (TAG). Quantitative measurements from both approaches exhibit a median correlation coefficient (r) of 0.99 using a dilution series of deuterated internal standards and 0.71 using endogenous plasma lipids in the context of aging. Application of both platforms to plasma from aging mouse reveals similar changes in total lipid levels across all major lipid classes and in specific lipid species. Interestingly, TAG is the lipid class that exhibits the most changes with age, suggesting that TAG metabolism is particularly sensitive to the aging process in mice. Collectively, our data show that the Lipidyzer platform provides comprehensive profiling of the most prevalent lipids in plasma in a simple and automated manner

    Neuroprotective effects of Cerebrolysin in triple repeat Tau transgenic model of Pick's disease and fronto-temporal tauopathies.

    BackgroundTauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative disorders with accumulation of three-repeat (3R) or four-repeat (4R) Tau. While 3R tau is found in Pick's disease and Alzheimer's disease (AD), 4R tau is more abundant in corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, and AD. We have previously shown that Cerebrolysinℱ (CBL), a neuropeptide mixture with neurotrophic effects, ameliorates the pathology in amyloid precursor protein transgenic (tg) mouse model of AD and 4R tau, however it is unclear if CBL ameliorates the deficits and neuropathology in the mouse model of Pick's disease over expressing 3R tau.ResultsMice expressing 3R tau (L266V and G272V mutations) under the mThy-1 promoter were treated with CBL in two separate groups, the first was 3 months old (treated for 3 months, IP) and the second was 6 months old (treated for 3 months, IP) at the start of the treatment. We found that although the levels of total 3R tau were unchanged, CBL reduced the levels of hyper-phosphorylated tau in both groups of mice. This was accompanied by reduced neurodegenerative pathology in the neocortex and hippocampus in both groups and by improvements in the behavioral deficits in the nest-building test and water maze in the 3-6 month group.ConclusionTaken together these results support the notion that CBL may be beneficial in other taupathy models by reducing the levels of aberrantly phosphorylated tau

    Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cardiovascular Consequences of Myocardial Bridging in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    Myocardial bridging (MB) is a congenital variant in which a segment of a coronary artery follows an atypical intramural course under a “bridge” of myocardium and is notably common in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This systematic review and meta-analysis explored the clinical consequences of MB in patients with HCM. A total of 3 outcome domains were investigated: cardiovascular mortality, nonfatal adverse cardiac events, and investigative indicators of myocardial ischemia. A meta-analysis was performed on 10 observational studies comparing outcomes in patients with HCM with and without MB. Studies were identified through a systematic search of 4 databases (PubMed, Scopus, Medline Complete, and Web of Science). The quality of the studies was assessed using a modified version of the Downs and Black tool, from which studies could score a maximum of 23 points. The mean score was 17.5 ± 1.3 (good). The meta-analysis showed that MB was not associated with cardiovascular mortality (odds ratio [OR] 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.56 to 5.15, p = 0.35) or nonfatal adverse cardiac events (OR 1.80, 95% CI 0.98 to 3.28, p = 0.06) but was associated with myocardial ischemia (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.03 to 3.44, p = 0.04). In conclusion, the potential prognostic implications of MB in HCM, especially in those with hemodynamically significant bridges and/or severe underlying disease, should not be ignored. The focus of future studies should be to establish functional and morphologic thresholds, by which MB may adversely influence prognosis by corroborating imaging findings with clinical outcome data

    Motor stereotypies in adult patients with Tourette syndrome

    Aim: Correctly diagnosing repetitive behaviors in patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) can be challenging. The differential diagnosis between tics and stereotypies is of particular importance, because of treatment implications. Methods: We assessed the prevalence and clinical characteristics of stereotypies in a large sample of adult patients with TS attending a specialist clinic. Results: Mild stereotypies were reported by 21/148 patients (14.2%). Patients with stereotypies were significantly more likely to have a comorbid diagnosis of Asperger syndrome, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, compared with patients without stereotypies. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the presence of Asperger syndrome significantly predicted stereotypy severity. Conclusion: Stereotypies are not rare in adults with TS and other neurodevelopmental conditions, especially Asperger syndrome
