Comparison of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content in milk of ewes and goats with the same dietary regimen

Milk fat is an important source of potential anticarcinogens named conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The c9, t11-CLA is the major isomer and it is produced by ruminal hydrogenation of linoleic acid that leads first to vaccenic (11t-18:1) and finally to stearic acid (18:0). An alternative CLA pathway is related to the action of the mammary Δ9-desaturase enzyme on 11t-18:1. Diet is considered the main factor that influence the CLA concentration in milk fat. Differences in CLA content of sheep (Antongiovanni et al., 2002) and goats milk (Nudda et al., 2002) have been hypothesized, but results are difficult to compare due to different experimental condition in which the trials are carried out. The aim of this work is to compare the composition of milk fatty acids and CLA content in goats and sheep maintained in the same environmental condition and dietary regimen

A local information based protocol for networks data exchange with application to mobile sensor networks

The paper presents a new protocol for multi hop data transmission between nodes in a mobile sensor network. The only requirement for the network is to be connected. The routing is handled locally on the basis of informations contained in the data transmitted. Global (time dependent) routing table as well as knowledge on the position of the nodes are not required, since the protocol itself contains an Hand-Shake phase for the neighbour detection. This allow to have high mobility for the nodes and, moreover, it is dynamically reconfigurable once the number of the nodes varies. A innovative data structure called "the Postman Bag" is introduced to spread data collected by sensor quickly and simply. Some considerations about the computational complexity and the performances of the proposed approach are reported on the basis of some simulations and some initial tests on small dimension networks

La conservation des images en mouvement

La conservation des images en mouvement s’est développée dans un certain isolement par rapport aux autres disciplines liées à la conservation du patrimoine culturel. Ce phénomène est principalement dû à la courte histoire du médium et au fait que la conservation des films n’est devenue un objet d’étude scientifique qu’au cours des dernières décennies. Il y a cependant d’autres raisons qui vont de la perception populaire du cinéma et de la vidéo comme expression de l’industrie du divertissement, à la croyance que les supports des images animées appartiennent à un « art de la reproduction » et ne possèdent pas le caractère d’unicité justifiant la conservation accordée aux autres artefacts. La transition des films photographiques analogiques aux médias numériques a à la fois exacerbée et contredit cette appréhension : alors que les images numériques en mouvement peuvent apparemment être reproduites indéfiniment, les éléments physiques produits avant l’ère du numérique sont en train d’acquérir le statut d’objets uniques qui leur était précédemment refusé. Cet article fait la proposition d’’inclure la conservation des films dans le contexte global de la préservation du patrimoine culturel par le biais d’une collaboration renforcée entre les conservateurs des images en mouvement et les spécialistes des autres domaines.Generally speaking, moving image preservation has developed in relative isolation from other disciplines related to the conservation of cultural heritage. This is mainly due to the short history of the medium and to the fact that film preservation has become the object of scientific study only in the past few decades. However, there are other reasons for this phenomenon, ranging from the popular perception of cinema and video as expressions of the entertainment industry, to the belief that moving image carriers represent an ‘art of reproduction’ and therefore do not possess the ‘uniqueness’ required to warrant the conservation treatment given to other artefacts. The transition from analogue photographic motion picture film to digital media has both exacerbated and contradicted this perception : while digital moving images can apparently be duplicated indefinitely, the physical elements produced before the digital era are now acquiring the status of unique objects previously denied to them. This article presents a case for the inclusion of film preservation in the overall context of the preservation of cultural heritage through an enhanced collaboration between moving image conservators and specialists in other areas

Experimental investigation on the vibrational and fluid dynamics behaviour of a turbocharger compressor in the transition to surge operation

High-speed dynamic centrifugal compressors are widely used both in the modern internal combustion engine design and in advanced pressurized cycles and innovative plant layouts as fuel cell systems. Surge strongly limits the stable operating region of centrifugal compressors in low mass flow rate conditions especially during fast transients. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate transient system dynamic response of compressor surge evolution and early detection of incipient compressor surge. A specific experimental investigation on compressor surge was carried out at the University of Genoa turbocharger test facility and results are presented and analysed in this paper. The activity consists of steady state and transient measurements used to characterize and identify compressor behaviour in correspondence of surge inception conditions. The frequency and time frequency data analysis have been applied on inflow pressure, anemometric and vibrational signals to identify their contents and so to be able to classify compressor operation as stable or unstable. Synchronous averages performed in the time domain have been identified as a suitable algorithmic tool to detect incipient surge conditions. Anemometric signal analysis allowed to identify intermitting phenomena in deep surge conditions may be related to the rise of a rotation stall condition. The obtained results provide original diagnostic and predictive methods to be integrated in a monitoring system capable of preventing surge and extending compressor operating range, performance and reliability to allow the integration with the other plant components
