Determination of gamma-ray widths in N using nuclear resonance fluorescence
The stable nucleus N is the mirror of O, the bottleneck in the
hydrogen burning CNO cycle. Most of the N level widths below the proton
emission threshold are known from just one nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF)
measurement, with limited precision in some cases. A recent experiment with the
AGATA demonstrator array determined level lifetimes using the Doppler Shift
Attenuation Method (DSAM) in O. As a reference and for testing the
method, level lifetimes in N have also been determined in the same
experiment. The latest compilation of N level properties dates back to
1991. The limited precision in some cases in the compilation calls for a new
measurement in order to enable a comparison to the AGATA demonstrator data. The
widths of several N levels have been studied with the NRF method. The
solid nitrogen compounds enriched in N have been irradiated with
bremsstrahlung. The -rays following the deexcitation of the excited
nuclear levels were detected with four HPGe detectors. Integrated
photon-scattering cross sections of ten levels below the proton emission
threshold have been measured. Partial gamma-ray widths of ground-state
transitions were deduced and compared to the literature. The photon scattering
cross sections of two levels above the proton emission threshold, but still
below other particle emission energies have also been measured, and proton
resonance strengths and proton widths were deduced. Gamma and proton widths
consistent with the literature values were obtained, but with greatly improved

Iron(III)-catalyzed chlorination of activated arenes
A general and regioselective method for the chlorination of activated arenes has been developed. The transformation uses iron(III) triflimide as a powerful Lewis acid for the activation of N-chlorosuccinimide and the subsequent chlorination of a wide range of anisole, aniline, acetanilide and phenol derivatives. The reaction was utilized for the late-stage mono- and di-chlorination of a range of target compounds such as the natural product nitrofungin, the antibacterial agent chloroxylenol and the herbicide chloroxynil. The facile nature of this transformation was demonstrated with the development of one-pot tandem iron-catalyzed dihalogenation processes allowing highly regioselective formation of different carbon-halogen bonds. The synthetic utility of the resulting dihalogenated aryl compounds as building blocks was established with the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceutically relevant targets
Band termination in the N=Z Odd-Odd Nucleus 46V
High spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 46V have been identified. At low
spin, the T=1 isobaric analogue states of 46Ti are established up to I = 6+.
Other high spin states, including the band terminating state, are tentatively
assigned to the same T=1 band. The T=0 band built on the low-lying 3+ isomer is
observed up to the 1f7/2-shell termination at I=15. Both signatures of a
negative parity T=0 band are observed up to the terminating states at I = 16-
and I = 17-, respectively. The structure of this band is interpreted as a
particle-hole excitation from the 1d3/2 shell. Spherical shell model
calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental

Performance of the Fully Digital FPGA-based Front-End Electronics for the GALILEO Array
In this work we present the architecture and results of a fully digital Front
End Electronics (FEE) read out system developed for the GALILEO array. The FEE
system, developed in collaboration with the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array
(AGATA) collaboration, is composed of three main blocks: preamplifiers,
digitizers and preprocessing electronics. The slow control system contains a
custom Linux driver, a dynamic library and a server implementing network
services. The digital processing of the data from the GALILEO germanium
detectors has demonstrated the capability to achieve an energy resolution of

coupling determined beyond the chiral limit
Within the conventional QCD sum rules, we calculate the coupling
constant, , beyond the chiral limit using two-point correlation
function with a pion. We consider the Dirac structure, , at
order, which has clear dependence on the PS and PV coupling schemes
for the pion-nucleon interactions. For a consistent treatment of the sum rule,
we include the linear terms in quark mass as they constitute the same chiral
order as . Using the PS coupling scheme for the pion-nucleon
interaction, we obtain , which is very close to the
empirical coupling. This demonstrates that going beyond the chiral
limit is crucial in determining the coupling and the pseudoscalar coupling

Signal modeling of high-purity Ge detectors with a small read-out electrode and application to neutrinoless double beta decay search in Ge-76
The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76
using high-purity germanium detectors enriched in Ge-76. The analysis of the
signal time structure provides a powerful tool to identify neutrinoless double
beta decay events and to discriminate them from gamma-ray induced backgrounds.
Enhanced pulse shape discrimination capabilities of "Broad Energy Germanium"
detectors with a small read-out electrode have been recently reported. This
paper describes the full simulation of the response of such a detector,
including the Monte Carlo modeling of radiation interaction and subsequent
signal shape calculation. A pulse shape discrimination method based on the
ratio between the maximum current signal amplitude and the event energy applied
to the simulated data shows quantitative agreement with the experimental data
acquired with calibration sources. The simulation has been used to study the
survival probabilities of the decays which occur inside the detector volume and
are difficult to assess experimentally. Such internal decay events are produced
by the cosmogenic radio-isotopes Ge-68 and Co-60 and the neutrinoless double
beta decay of Ge-76. Fixing the experimental acceptance of the double escape
peak of the 2.614 MeV photon to 90%, the estimated survival probabilities at
Qbb = 2.039 MeV are (86+-3)% for Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decays,
(4.5+-0.3)% for the Ge-68 daughter Ga-68, and (0.9+0.4-0.2)% for Co-60 decays.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures. v2: fixed typos and references. Submitted to

Observation of isotonic symmetry for enhanced quadrupole collectivity in neutron-rich 62,64,66Fe isotopes at N=40
The transition rates for the 2_{1}^{+} states in 62,64,66Fe were studied
using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift technique applied to projectile Coulomb
excitation reactions. The deduced E2 strengths illustrate the enhanced
collectivity of the neutron-rich Fe isotopes up to N=40. The results are
interpreted by the generalized concept of valence proton symmetry which
describes the evolution of nuclear structure around N=40 as governed by the
number of valence protons with respect to Z~30. The deformation suggested by
the experimental data is reproduced by state-of-the-art shell calculations with
a new effective interaction developed for the fpgd valence space.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Transition probabilities in the X(5) candidate Ba
To investigate the possible X(5) character of 122Ba, suggested by the ground
state band energy pattern, the lifetimes of the lowest yrast states of 122Ba
have been measured, via the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method. The relevant
levels have been populated by using the 108Cd(16O,2n)122Ba and the
112Sn(13C,3n)122Ba reactions. The B(E2) values deduced in the present work are
compared to the predictions of the X(5) model and to calculations performed in
the framework of the IBA-1 and IBA-2 models
