Modelling of platelet aggregation in aneurysm
Thrombi are often found in aneurysms and are considered to play an important role in rupture. It is crucial to scrutinise any correlation between the probability of rupture and the extent to which thrombi are generated in the aneurysm. Numerical techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are promising tools in the biomedical field. However, there are, at present, no models that allow us to evaluate thrombus generation. The authors aim at the proposal of such a model. In the present study, the process of platelet aggregation is considered. In blood flow near the entry to an aneurysm, red blood cells are haemolysed due to high shear stress or high pressure. The ensuing release of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) induces the aggregation. Making reference to actual aggregation curves of human plasma for various ADP concentrations, the authors have modelled the rate at which the density of aggregated platelets continues to increase in the aggregation process. A combination of CFD and the present model enables us to obtain the distribution of platelets clotting in an aneurysm

Production and optical properties of liquid scintillator for the JSNS experiment
The JSNS (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron
Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short
baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS inner detector will be filled with 17 tons
of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of
unloaded LS in the intermediate -catcher and outer veto volumes.
JSNS has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because
of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished
facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experiment.
JSNS plans to use ISO tanks for the storage and transportation of the LS.
In this paper, we describe the LS production, and present measurements of its
optical properties and long term stability. Our measurements show that storing
the LS in ISO tanks does not result in degradation of its optical properties.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
Rheology of Naturally Deformed Antigorite Serpentinite: Strain and Strain‐Rate Dependence at Mantle‐Wedge Conditions
Antigorite serpentinite is expected to occur in parts of subduction plate boundaries, and may suppress earthquake slip, but the dominant deformation mechanisms and resultant rheology of antigorite are unclear. An exhumed plate boundary shear zone exposed near Nagasaki, Japan, contains antigorite deformed at 474°C ± 30°C. Observations indicate that a foliation defined by (001) crystal facets developed during plate-boundary shear. Microstructures indicating grain-scale dissolution at high-stress interfaces and precipitation in low-stress regions suggest that dissolution-precipitation creep contributed to foliation development. Analysis of crystal orientations indicate a small contribution from dislocation activity. We suggest a frictional-viscous rheology for antigorite, where dissolution-precipitation produces a foliation defined by (001) crystal facets and acts to resolve strain incompatibilities, allowing for efficient face-to-face sliding between facets. This rheology can not only explain aseismic behavior at ambient plate boundary conditions, but also some of the contrasting behaviors shown by previous field and laboratory studies

A Measurement of the Branching Fraction for the Inclusive B --> X(s) gamma Decays with the Belle Detector
We have measured the branching fraction of the inclusive radiative B meson
decay B --> X(s) gamma to be Br(B->X(s)gamma)=(3.36 +/- 0.53(stat) +/-
0.42(sys) +0.50-0.54(th)) x 10^{-4}.
The result is based on a sample of 6.07 x 10^6 BBbar events collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^-
storage ring.Comment: 14 pages, 6 Postsript figures, uses elsart.cl
Measurement of the CP Violation Parameter sin(2phi_1) in B^0_d Meson Decays
We present a measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter
sin(2phi_1) based on a 10.5 fb^{-1} data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S)
resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. One
neutral B meson is reconstructed in the J/psi K_S, psi(2S) K_S, chi_{c1} K_S,
eta_c K_S, J/psi K_L or J/psi pi^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor
of the accompanying B meson is identified from its charged particle decay
products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between
the two B-meson decay points, we determine sin(2phi_1) = 0.58 +0.32-0.34 (stat)
+0.09-0.10 (syst).Comment: LaTex, 13 pages, 3 figures, submitted to P.R.
Measurement of B0d - B0d-bar mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the Upsilon(4S)
We report a determination of the B0d - B0d-bar mixing parameter Delta-m_d
based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The
measurement is based on a 5.9 /fb data sample collected by the Belle detector
at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and
opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression
containing Delta-m_d as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we
obtain Delta-m_d = 0.463 +- 0.008(stat.) +- 0.016(sys.) ps^{-1} This is the
first determination of Delta-m_d from time evolution measurements at the
Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
The threshold for the McGurk effect in audio-visual noise decreases with development
Across development, vision increasingly infuences audio-visual perception. This is evidenced in illusions such as the McGurk efect, in which a seen mouth movement changes the perceived sound. The current paper assessed the efects of manipulating the clarity of the heard and seen signal upon the McGurk efect in children aged 3–6 (n=29), 7–9 (n=32) and 10–12 (n=29) years, and adults aged 20–35 years (n=32). Auditory noise increased, and visual blur decreased, the likelihood of vision changing auditory perception. Based upon a proposed developmental shift from auditory to visual dominance we predicted that younger children would be less susceptible to McGurk responses, and that adults would continue to be infuenced by vision in higher levels of visual noise and with less auditory noise. Susceptibility to the McGurk efect was higher in adults compared with 3–6-year-olds and 7–9-yearolds but not 10–12-year-olds. Younger children required more auditory noise, and less visual noise, than adults to induce McGurk responses (i.e. adults and older children were more easily infuenced by vision). Reduced susceptibility in childhood supports the theory that sensory dominance shifts across development and reaches adult-like levels by 10 years of age
