    A low-delay digital PWM control circuit for DC-DC converters

    This paper is descried about a proposed scheme of a low-cost digital pulse width modulation (DPWM) control circuit for non-isolated DC-DC converter without A/D converter. Also,real-time PID control technique for DPWM is described. Some experimental results are revealed the proposed circuit and scheme.     Neuroprotective activation of astrocytes by methylmercury exposure in the inferior colliculus

    Methylmercury (MeHg) is well known to induce auditory disorders such as dysarthria. When we performed a global analysis on the brains of mice exposed to MeHg by magnetic resonance imaging, an increase in the T1 signal in the inferior colliculus (IC), which is localized in the auditory pathway, was observed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the pathophysiology and auditory dysfunction induced by MeHg, focusing on the IC. Measurement of the auditory brainstem response revealed increases in latency and decreases in threshold in the IC of mice exposed to MeHg for 4 weeks compared with vehicle mice. Incoordination in MeHg-exposed mice was noted after 6 weeks of exposure, indicating that IC dysfunction occurs earlier than incoordination. There was no change in the number of neurons or microglial activity, while the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein, a marker for astrocytic activity, was elevated in the IC of MeHg-exposed mice after 4 weeks of exposure, indicating that astrogliosis occurs in the IC. Suppression of astrogliosis by treatment with fluorocitrate exacerbated the latency and threshold in the IC evaluated by the auditory brainstem response. Therefore, astrocytes in the IC are considered to play a protective role in the auditory pathway. Astrocytes exposed to MeHg increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the IC, suggesting that astrocytic brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a potent protectant in the IC. This study showed that astrogliosis in the IC could be an adaptive response to MeHg toxicity.     A New Framework of Technology and Engineering Education Proposed by the Japan Society of Technology Education

    The Japan Society of Technology Education (JSTE), an academic society for leading technology education research in Japan, has proposed a new framework of technology and engineering education in 2021 to impact the next revision of the Japan's national curriculum. The proposal includes a triple-loop model of the engineering design process and a model of the problem-solving process in line with learners' developmental stages. It also proposes to incorporate the connections between physical and cyber technologies, and between technology and other disciplines in the scope of technology education. However, this proposal was written in Japanese only, is not translated in other language. In this report, we will report of the result of survey conducted in this project, and introduce the contents of the proposal with some practical examples

    Development of a new framework of Technology and Engineering Education by the Japan Society of Technology Education

    It is considered important to clarify the role of technology and engineering education for evolving STEM/STEAM education in each country. However, in Japan, unlike in other countries, the focus on STEAM education began after 2018, so the relevance of STEAM education to technology and engineering education has not yet been fully discussed. Therefore, the Japan Society of Technology Education (JSTE) tried to develop a new framework of technology and engineering education for promoting STEAM education in Japan prior to the revision of the National Curriculum. First, we conducted a survey on 1,656 Japanese junior high school students about the status of ‘Technology’ learning. As a result, it was shown that Japanese students have a positive attitude of ‘Technology’ classes. However, there is a lack of learning activities related exploring technology, and design problem-solving is not adequately linked to abilities for technological innovation and governance. From this, we developed a new framework focused on enhancing exploratory activities and problem-solving related to engineering. The framework included the Triple-Loop Model as the engineering design process, the connections between physical and cyber technologies within that scope, and the learning model of STEAM education that centred on the engineering design process with various connections among all subject areas. Lastly, we conducted a survey to evaluate the new framework on JSTE members (four-point scale, agreement rating). As a result, many received mean value of 3.00 or higher, showing that the participants agreed with the proposals. However, the concept of the term ‘Engineering’ (2.78) had a mean value of less than 3.00 and a larger SD than the others. Therefore, in the last version the concept of the term ‘Engineering’ was revised, and the framework was completed

    Usefulness of transcatheter arterial embolization prior to excision of hypervascular musculoskeletal tumors

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of transcatheter arterial embolization prior to surgical excision of musculoskeletal tumors. We reviewed the records of nine patients (3 females and 6 males) who received arterial embolization prior to excision of musculoskeletal tumors in our hospital from December 2009 to April 2010. We evaluated tumor region, size, histopathology, feeding artery, embolic material, and blood loss during surgery. We compared the actual amount of intraoperative bleeding with arterial embolization to estimated amounts of bleeding without embolization predicted by three orthopedic surgeons. Arterial embolization was performed on the same day or within 5 days before surgery. Operations were performed as planned in all patients without serious complications. The amount of intraoperative bleeding was 35-4200 mL and there was significantly less bleeding with arterial embolization compared with the estimated amounts (p<0.01). Our results show that arterial embolization prior to resection of hypervascular musculoskeletal tumors reduces the amount of bleeding during surgery and contributes to patient safety

    Radiation dose during relativistic electron precipitation events at the International Space Station

    AbstractWe provide a quantitative estimate of the radiation dose during relativistic electron precipitation (REP) events at the International Space Station (ISS). To this goal, we take advantage of the data collected by the CALorimetric Electron Telescope, the Monitor of All‐sky X‐ray Image, and the Space Environment Data Acquisition equipment‐Attached Payload. The three ISS detectors offer complementary REP observations, including energy spectra and flux directional information, during a period of approximately 2.5 years, from November 2015 to March 2018. We have identified 762 REP events during this period from which we obtain the distribution of radiation dose, relevant to extravehicular activities outside the ISS

    Prognostic impact of adjuvant endocrine therapy for estrogen receptor-positive and HER2-negative T1a/bN0M0 breast cancer

    Purpose Mammography screening has increased the detection of subcentimeter breast cancers. The prognosis for estrogen receptor (ER)-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative T1a/bN0M0 breast cancers is excellent; however, the necessity of adjuvant endocrine therapy (ET) is uncertain. Methods We evaluated the effectiveness of adjuvant ET in patients with ER-positive and HER2-negative T1a/bN0M0 breast cancer who underwent surgery from 2008 to 2012. Standard ET was administrated after surgery. The primary endpoint was the cumulative incidence of distant metastasis. All statistical tests were 2-sided. Results Adjuvant ET was administered to 3991 (83%) of the 4758 eligible patients (1202 T1a [25.3%] and 3556 T1b [74.7%], diseases). The median follow-up period was 9.2 years. The 9-year cumulative incidence of distant metastasis was 1.5% with ET and 2.6% without ET (adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio [sHR], 0.54; 95% CI, 0.32–0.93). In multivariate analysis, the independent risk factors for distant metastasis were no history of ET, mastectomy, high-grade, and lymphatic invasion. The 9-year overall survival was 97.0% and 94.4% with and without ET, respectively (adjusted HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.39–0.83). In addition, adjuvant ET reduced the incidence of ipsilateral and contralateral breast cancer (9-year rates; 1.1% vs. 6.9%; sHR, 0.17, and 1.9% vs. 5.2%; sHR, 0.33). Conclusions The prognosis was favorable in patients with ER-positive and HER2-negative T1a/bN0M0 breast cancer. Furthermore, adjuvant ET reduced the incidence of distant metastasis with minimal absolute risk difference. These findings support considering the omission of adjuvant ET, especially for patients with low-grade and no lymphatic invasion disease

    Identification of the ultrahigh-risk subgroup in neuroblastoma cases through DNA methylation analysis and its treatment exploiting cancer metabolism

    神経芽腫の新たな診断法と治療戦略を創出 --がん細胞の生存戦略「がん代謝」を逆用する--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-11-02.Neuroblastomas require novel therapies that are based on the exploitation of their biological mechanism. To address this need, we analyzed the DNA methylation and expression datasets of neuroblastomas, extracted a candidate gene characterizing the aggressive features, and conducted functional studies. Based on the DNA methylation data, we identified a subgroup of neuroblastoma cases with 11q loss of heterozygosity with extremely poor prognosis. PHGDH, a serine metabolism-related gene, was extracted as a candidate with strong expression and characteristic methylation in this subgroup as well as in cases with MYCN amplification. PHGDH inhibition suppressed neuroblastoma cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo, indicating that the inhibition of serine metabolism by PHGDH inhibitors is a therapeutic alternative for neuroblastoma. Inhibiting the arginine metabolism, which is closely related to serine metabolism using arginine deiminase, had a combination effect both in vitro and in vivo, especially on extracellular arginine-dependent neuroblastoma cells with ASS1 deficiency. Expression and metabolome analyses of post-dose cells confirmed the synergistic effects of treatments targeting serine and arginine indicated that xCT inhibitors that inhibit cystine uptake could be candidates for further combinatorial treatment. Our results highlight the rational therapeutic strategy of targeting serine/arginine metabolism for intractable neuroblastoma
