    Framework for non-perturbative analysis of a Z(3)-symmetric effective theory of finite temperature QCD

    We study a three dimensional Z(3)-symmetric effective theory of high temperature QCD. The exact lattice-continuum relations, needed in order to perform lattice simulations with physical parameters, are computed to order O(a^0) in lattice perturbation theory.     Lattice Artefacts In The Non-Abelian Debye Screening Mass In One Loop Order

    We compute the electric screening mass in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions at finite temperature and chemical potential to one-loop order, and show that lattice artefacts arising from a finite lattice spacing result in an enhancement of the screening mass as compared to the continuum. We discuss the magnitude of this enhancement as a function of the temperature and chemical potential for lattices with different number of lattice sites in the temporal direction that can be implemented in lattice simulations.     The η\eta production in the nucleon resonance energy region is studied within the unitary coupled-channels effective Lagrangian approach of the Giessen model. We demonstrate that the second peak recently observed in the cross section of η\eta photoproduction on the neutron at s\sqrt{s}=1.66 GeV can be explained in terms of coupled-channel effects due to S11(1650)S_{11}(1650) and P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) resonance excitations

    A short proof of the logarithmic Bramson correction in Fisher-KPP equations

    International audienceIn this paper, we explain in simple PDE terms a famous result of Bramson about the loga- rithmic delay of the position of the solutions u(t, x) of Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equations in R, with respect to the position of the travelling front with minimal speed. Our proof is based on the comparison of u to the solutions of linearized equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions at the position of the minimal front, with and without the logarithmic delay. Our analysis also yields the large-time convergence of the solutions u along their level sets to the profile of the minimal travelling front

    Preclinical Optimization and Safety Studies of a New Lentiviral Gene Therapy for p47phox-Deficient Chronic Granulomatous Disease

    Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited blood disorder that renders patients susceptible to infections and inflammation. A recent clinical trial of lentiviral gene therapy for the most frequent form of CGD, X-linked, has demonstrated stable correction over time, with no adverse events related to the gene therapy procedure. We have recently developed a parallel lentiviral vector for p47-deficient CGD (p47phoxCGD), the second most common form of this disease. Using this vector, we have observed biochemical correction of CGD in a mouse model of the disease. In preparation for clinical trial approval, we have performed standardised pre-clinical studies following Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles, to assess the safety of the gene therapy procedure. We report no evidence of adverse events, including mutagenesis and tumourigenesis, in human haematopoietic stem cells transduced with the lentiviral vector. Biodistribution studies of transduced human CD34+ cells indicate that the homing properties or engraftment ability of the stem cells is not negatively affected. CD34+ cells derived from a p47phoxCGD patient were subjected to an optimised transduction protocol and transplanted into immunocompromised mice. After the procedure, patient-derived neutrophils resumed NADPH oxidase production in vivo, suggesting that gene correction was successful. These studies pave the way to a first-in-man clinical trial of lentiviral gene therapy for the treatment of p47phoxCGD

    Interactions between surfactants and {1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy-butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl}

    The interaction between the water-soluble anionic conjugated copolymer poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy-butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} (PBS-PFP) and various surfactants has been studied in aqueous solution by UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence and electrical conductivity. It is suggested from the linear dependence of absorbance, fluorescence and electrical conductivity on concentration that in the absence of surfactant, moderately stable dispersions are formed. These are affected in different ways on adding cationic, anionic or neutral surfactants. With the cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, quenching of fluorescence intensity and lifetime, and formation of a new emission occurs at concentrations well below the critical micelle concentration (cmc). Electrical conductivity measurements indicate a discontinuity at surfactant/polymer ratio corresponding to electroneutrality, due to complexation. With the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate, fluorescence quenching is also observed, but is attributed to formation of some mixed polymer/surfactant aggregate. The most striking changes are observed with the non-ionic pentaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether (C12E5), where a blue shift in fluorescence emission, dramatic increases in lifetime and quantum yield, and changes in electrical around the cmc are interpreted in terms of incorporation of single polymer chains in elongated cylindrical micelles.
