Five views of a secret: does cognition change during middle adulthood?
This study examined five aspects of change (or
stability) in cognitive abilities in middle adulthood across a
12-year period. Data come from the Interdisciplinary Study
on Adult Development. The sample consisted of N = 346
adults (43.8 years on average, 48.6% female). In total, 11
cognitive tests were administered to assess fluid and crystallized
intelligence, memory, and processing speed. In a
first series of analyses, strong measurement invariance was
established. Subsequently, structural stability, differential
stability, stability of divergence, absolute stability, and the
generality of changes were examined. Factor covariances
were shown to be equal across time, implying structural
stability. Stability coefficients were around .90 for fluid and
crystallized intelligence, and speed, indicating high, yet not
perfect differential stability. The coefficient for memory
was .58. Only in processing speed the variance increased
across time, indicating heterogeneity in interindividual
development. Significant mean-level changes emerged,
with an increase in crystallized intelligence and decline in
the other three abilities. A number of correlations among
changes in cognitive abilities were significant, implying

Effects of Large CP violating phases on g_{\m}-2 in MSSM
Effects of CP violation on the supersymmetric electro-weak correction to the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are investigated with the most general
allowed set of CP violating phases in MSSM. The analysis includes contributions
from the chargino and the neutralino exchanges to the muon anomaly. The
supersymmetric contributions depend only on specific combinations of CP phases.
The independent set of such phases is classified. We analyse the effects of the
phases under the EDM constraints and show that large CP violating phases can
drastically affect the magnitude of the supersymmetric electro-weak
contribution to and may even affect its overall sign.Comment: 26 pages Latex file including 4 figure
Improved Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment
A new measurement of the positive muon's anomalous magnetic moment has been
made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron using the direct
injection of polarized muons into the superferric storage ring. The angular
frequency difference omega_{a} between the angular spin precession frequency
omega_{s} and the angular orbital frequency omega_{c} is measured as well as
the free proton NMR frequency omega_{p}. These determine
R = omega_{a} / omega_{p} = 3.707~201(19) times 10^{-3}. With mu_{mu} /
mu_{p} = 3.183~345~39(10) this gives a_{mu^+} = 11~659~191(59) times 10^{-10}
(pm 5 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN and BNL measurements for

Optimising Psychoeducation for Transient Ischaemic Attack and Minor Stroke Management (OPTIMISM): Protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial
Background: A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and minor stroke are medical emergencies and often a warning sign of future strokes if remain untreated. Few studies have investigated the long-term psychosocial effects of TIA and minor stroke. Secondary prevention and medical management are often the primary focus with limited access offered for further psychosocial support. Psychoeducational interventions can provide education and advice to people with physical health conditions and, with suitable tailoring, could be appropriate for people after TIA and minor stroke. This study aims to develop a group psychoeducational intervention for people after TIA and minor stroke and to test whether it is acceptable and feasible.
Methods: This mixed-methodology study involves two phases: Phase 1) A qualitative study to determine the content of a suitable intervention; Phase 2) A single-centre feasibility randomised controlled trial to evaluate the acceptability of this intervention. The overall study has ethical approval. Stroke survivors have been involved in designing and monitoring the trial. The aim is to recruit 30-40 participants from a Stroke/TIA Service, within 6 months following their diagnosis. Participants will be randomly allocated to either the usual care control group or the intervention group (psychoeducational programme). The programme will consist of six group sessions based on providing education, psychological and social support. The primary outcomes will relate to the feasibility aims of the study. Outcomes will be collected at 3 and 6 months to assess mood, quality of life, knowledge and satisfaction, and resource use.
Discussion: There is a need to develop and evaluate effective interventions that enhance the education provided to people after TIA and minor stroke and to promote their psychosocial wellbeing. Findings will indicate the acceptability of the intervention and parameters needed to conduct a definitive trial
Event-based prospective memory performance in autism spectrum disorder
The purpose of the present study was to investigate event-based prospective memory performance in individuals with autism spectrum disorder and to explore possible relations between laboratory-based prospective memory performance and everyday performance. Nineteen children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and 19 matched neurotypical controls participated. The laboratory-based prospective memory test was embedded in a visuo-spatial working memory test and required participants to remember to respond to a cue-event. Everyday planning performance was assessed with proxy ratings. Although parents of the autism group rated their children’s everyday performance as significantly poorer than controls’ parents, no group differences were found in event-based prospective memory. Nevertheless, individual differences in laboratory-based and everyday performances were related. Clinical implications of these findings are discussed
