    The 2016-2017 peak luminosity of the pre-main sequence variable V2492 Cyg

    V2492 Cyg is a young pre-main sequence star presenting repetitive brightness variations of significant amplitude (Delta R > 5 mag) whose physical origin has been ascribed to both extinction (UXor-type) and accretion (EXor-type) variability, although their mutual proportion has not been clarified yet. Recently, V2492 Cyg has reached a level of brightness ever registered in the period of its documented activity. Optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy have been obtained in October 2016 and between March and July 2017. The source has remained bright until the end of May 2017, then it started to rapidly fade since the beginning of June at a rate of about 0.08 mag/day. On mid-July 2017 the source has reached the same low-brightness level as two years before. Extinction and mass accretion rate were derived by means of the luminosity of the brightest lines, in particular Halpha and Hbeta. A couple of optical high-resolution spectra are also presented to derive information on the gas kinematics. Visual extinction variations do not exceed a few magnitudes, while the mass accretion rate is estimated to vary from less than 10^-8 up to a few 10^-7 M_sun/yr. This latter is comparable to that estimated on the previous high-state in 2010, likely occurred under more severe extinction conditions. The combined analysis of the optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations extends to the present event the original suggestion that the V2492 Cyg variability is a combination of changing extinction and accretion.Comment: Accepted by A&

    Minimization of length and curvature on planar curves

    In this paper we consider the problem of reconstructing a curve that is partially hidden or corrupted by minimizing the functional ∫ √1+K 2 ds, depending both on length and curvature K. We fix starting and ending points as well as initial and final directions. For this functional, we find non-existence of minimizers on various functional spaces in which the problem is naturally formulated. In this case, minimizing sequences of trajectories can converge to curves with angles. We instead prove existence of minimizers for the "time-reparameterized" functional ∫γ(t)√1+Kγ2 dt for all boundary conditions if initial and final directions are considered regardless to orientation. ©2009 IEEE

    Ionization signals from electrons and alpha-particles in mixtures of liquid Argon and Nitrogen - perspectives on protons for Gamma Resonant Nuclear Absorption applications

    In this paper we report on a detailed study of ionization signals produced by Compton electrons and alpha-particles in a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) flled with different mixtures of liquid Argon and Nitrogen. The measurements were carried out with Nitrogen concentrations up to 15% and a drift electric feld in the range 0-50 kV/cm. A prediction for proton ionization signals is made by means of interpolation. This study has been conducted in view of the possible use of liquid Ar-N2 TPCs for the detection of gamma-rays in the resonant band of the Nitrogen absorption spectrum, a promising technology for security and medical applications

    Structural optimization and biological evaluation of 2-substituted 5-hydroxyindole-3-carboxylates as potent inhibitors of human 5-lipoxygenase.

    Pharmacological suppression of leukotriene biosynthesis by inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) is a strategy to intervene with inflammatory and allergic disorders. We recently presented 2-amino-5-hydroxy-1H-indoles as efficient 5-LO inhibitors in cell-based and cell-free assays. Structural optimization led to novel benzo[g]indole-3-carboxylates exemplified by ethyl 2-(3-chlorobenzyl)-5- hydroxy-1H-benzo[g]indole-3-carboxylate (compound 11a), which inhibits 5-LO activity in human neutrophils and recombinant human 5-LO with IC50 values of 0.23 and 0.086 μM, respectively. Notably, 11a efficiently blocks 5-LO product formation in human whole blood assays (IC50 = 0.83-1.6 μM) and significantly prevented leukotriene B4 production in pleural exudates of carrageenan-treated rats, associated with reduced severity of pleurisy. Together, on the basis of their high potency against 5-LO and the marked efficacy in biological systems, these novel and straightforward benzo[g]indole-3-carboxylates may have potential as anti-inflammatory therapeutics

    30 kV coaxial vacuum-tight feedthrough for operation at cryogenic temperatures

    In this paper we describe the technology of building a vacuum-tight high voltage feedthrough which is able to operate at voltages up to 30 kV. The feedthrough has a coaxial structure with a grounded sheath which makes it capable to lead high voltage potentials into cryogenic liquids, without risk of surface discharges in the gas phase above the liquid level. The feedthrough is designed to be used in ionization detectors, based on liquefied noble gases, such as Argon or Xenon

    Computation of microdosimetric distributions for small sites

    Skim milk fermented by Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei R-68 is expected to produce fermented milk with more complete nutritional value and health benefits. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications thus obtaining 20 experimental units. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). If the F count is greater than or equal to F table then continued with DNMRT test at 5% level. The results show that the addition of skim milk significantly affected the taste, color and consistency of probiotic fermented milk. Score for overall acceptance test indicated that the panelists were “rather like to like” for probiotik fermented milk. The best treatment based on the sensoric evaluation was SS15 (addition 15% concentration of skim milk
