    Exact algorithms for a task assignment problem

    We consider the following task assignment problem. Communicating tasks are to be assigned to heterogeneous processors interconnected with a heterogeneous network. The objective is to minimize the total sum of the execution and communication costs. The problem is NP-hard. We present an exact algorithm based on the well-known A* search. We report simulation results over a wide range of parameters where the largest solved instance contains about three hundred tasks to be assigned to eight processors. © World Scientific Publishing Company

    Partitioning sparse matrices for parallel preconditioned iterative methods

    This paper addresses the parallelization of the preconditioned iterative methods that use explicit preconditioners such as approximate inverses. Parallelizing a full step of these methods requires the coefficient and preconditioner matrices to be well partitioned. We first show that different methods impose different partitioning requirements for the matrices. Then we develop hypergraph models to meet those requirements. In particular, we develop models that enable us to obtain partitionings on the coefficient and preconditioner matrices simultaneously. Experiments on a set of unsymmetric sparse matrices show that the proposed models yield effective partitioning results. A parallel implementation of the right preconditioned BiCGStab method on a PC cluster verifies that the theoretical gains obtained by the models hold in practice. © 2007 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

    Multi-level direct K-way hypergraph partitioning with multiple constraints and fixed vertices

    K-way hypergraph partitioning has an ever-growing use in parallelization of scientific computing applications. We claim that hypergraph partitioning with multiple constraints and fixed vertices should be implemented using direct K-way refinement, instead of the widely adopted recursive bisection paradigm. Our arguments are based on the fact that recursive-bisection-based partitioning algorithms perform considerably worse when used in the multiple constraint and fixed vertex formulations. We discuss possible reasons for this performance degradation. We describe a careful implementation of a multi-level direct K-way hypergraph partitioning algorithm, which performs better than a well-known recursive-bisection-based partitioning algorithm in hypergraph partitioning with multiple constraints and fixed vertices. We also experimentally show that the proposed algorithm is effective in standard hypergraph partitioning. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Canal wall reconstruction and mastoid obliteration with composite multi-fractured osteoperiosteal flap

    We used inferior pedicled composite multi-fractured osteoperiosteal flap (CMOF), our original and new surgical approach, to obliterate the mastoid cavity and reconstruct the external auditory canal (EAC) to prevent the open cavity problems. CMOF was used to obliterate the mastoid cavity and reconstruct the EAC in 24 patients (13 women, 11 men; age span 12–51 years) who underwent radical mastoidectomy to treat the chronic otitis media between 1998 and 2004. Small meatoplasty was done in all 24 patients to relive their aesthetical concerns. Temporal bone CT scanning was done to observe the neo-osteogenesis in the mastoidectomy cavity and the CMOF, and the EAC volume was measured postoperatively. All our patients were followed-up for 2 years. The epithelization of the new EAC in our patients was complete at the end of the second month. Cholesteatoma, granulation, and recurrence of osteitis did not occur in any of the patients. We saw the new bone formation filling the mastoid cavity in the postoperative temporal bone CT scanning images. The mean volume of the new EAC on the 24th month was 1.83 ± 0.56 cm(3). We had an almost natural EAC, which owed its existence to the neo-osteogenesis that grows behind the CMOF, which we use to obliterate the mastoid cavity and to reconstruct the EAC
