Methods for eradication of the biofilms formed by opportunistic pathogens using novel techniques – A review

    Get PDF
The inconvenient environmental conditions force microorganisms to colonize either abiotic surfaces or animal and plant tissues and, therefore, form more resistant structures – biofilms. The phenomenon of microbial adherence, opportunistic pathogens in particular, is of a great concern. Colonization of medical devices and biofilm formation on their surface, may lead to severe infections mainly in humans with impaired immune system. Although, current research consider various methods for prevention of microbial biofilms formation, still, once a biofilm is formed, its elimination is almost impossible. This study focuses on the overview of novel methods applied for eradication of mature opportunistic pathogens' biofilms. Among various techniques the following: cold plasma, electric field, ultrasounds, ozonated water treatment, phagotherapy, matrix targeting enzymes, bacteriocins, synthetic chemicals and natural origin compounds used for biofilm matrix disruption were briefly described

Activity of compounds of natural origin against Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris, a common fruit juices contaminant

Fruit product industry struggles with emerging problem of microbial contamination with Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris. This acidothermophilic, soil-borne and sporeforming bacterium posses ability to survive commercial pasteurization and thus may cause fruit juices spoilage. Even modern technologies are not effective enough to eliminate A. acidoterrestris from the industrial environments. The green consumer attitude and safety standards suggest adaptation of natural and safe solutions. This paper summarizes the bioactivity of compounds of natural origin which could serve as anti-alicyclobacilli preservation agents maintaining stability of fruit juices

Zespół Guillaina-Barrégo jako pierwsza manifestacja zespołu POEMS

POEMS syndrome is a rare multisystem disorder, characterized by the presence of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein and skin changes. The variety of clinical pictures and asynchronous manifestation of dominant features make diagnosis difficult. We report a case of a 42-year-old man with polyneuropathy who was initially negative for monoclonal protein and so Guillain-Barré syndrome was diagnosed. Other signs and symptoms, including monoclonal gammopathy, developed later in the course of the disease and finally POEMS syndrome was diagnosed.Zespół POEMS należy do rzadkich chorób układowych, charakteryzujących się występowaniem polineuropatii, organomegalii, endokrynopatii, obecnością białka monoklonalnego i zmian skórnych. Różnorodny obraz kliniczny oraz niewystępowanie głównych objawów w jednym czasie znacznie utrudniają i opóźniają diagnostykę. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek 42-letniego mężczyzny z obwodową polineuropatią, u którego początkowo nie stwierdzono obecności białka monoklonalnego i rozpoznano zespół Guillaina-Barrègo. Później ujawniły się inne objawy i ostatecznie rozpoznano zespół POEMS

The Role of Individual Variables, Organizational Variables and Moral Intensity Dimensions in Libyan Management Accountants’ Ethical Decision Making

This study investigates the association of a broad set of variables with the ethical decision making of management accountants in Libya. Adopting a cross-sectional methodology, a questionnaire including four different ethical scenarios was used to gather data from 229 participants. For each scenario, ethical decision making was examined in terms of the recognition, judgment and intention stages of Rest’s model. A significant relationship was found between ethical recognition and ethical judgment and also between ethical judgment and ethical intention, but ethical recognition did not significantly predict ethical intention—thus providing support for Rest’s model. Organizational variables, age and educational level yielded few significant results. The lack of significance for codes of ethics might reflect their relative lack of development in Libya, in which case Libyan companies should pay attention to their content and how they are supported, especially in the light of the under-development of the accounting profession in Libya. Few significant results were also found for gender, but where they were found, males showed more ethical characteristics than females. This unusual result reinforces the dangers of gender stereotyping in business. Personal moral philosophy and moral intensity dimensions were generally found to be significant predictors of the three stages of ethical decision making studied. One implication of this is to give more attention to ethics in accounting education, making the connections between accounting practice and (in Libya) Islam. Overall, this study not only adds to the available empirical evidence on factors affecting ethical decision making, notably examining three stages of Rest’s model, but also offers rare insights into the ethical views of practising management accountants and provides a benchmark for future studies of ethical decision making in Muslim majority countries and other parts of the developing world

Sesje te stanowią największe w skali kraju forum prezentacji najnowszych osiągnięć naukowych i technologicznych w dziedzinie technologii żywności i żywienia człowieka, jak również wymiany poglądów oraz doświadczeń pracowników jednostek naukowych i przedstawicieli przemysłu spożywczego. Tematyka XLIV Sesji dotyczyć będzie szeroko pojętej problematyki związanej z oddziaływaniem żywności i odżywiania na zdrowie człowieka

Assessment of Railway Station Modernisation Combining Risk Analysis with Multi-Criteria Analysis

    No full text
When modernising train stations, several options are usually available for the layout of the tracks and its parameters. The best option is chosen by assessing different criteria; it is not an exact procedure, but a compromise between often different perspectives. Many methods are available to aid the decision-making process in these situations; the authors of this article apply mutually combined multi-criteria and qualitative risk analysis to assess two self-proposed options for the modernisation of the Bakov nad Jizerou station (situated in Central Bohemia in the Czech Republic)

Innovative Management of Vegetable Outgrades as a Means of Food Loss and Waste Reduction

    No full text
The present research focuses on using plant waste from agricultural production chains (vegetable outgrades) as ingredient sources for innovative food strategy developments. The quality of multi-vegetable products made from frozen vegetable outgrades (broccoli, cauliflower, green and yellow cut beans) for serving in gastronomy was evaluated. Vegetable outgrades were found to be low-cost sources of nutritional components. The dietary fiber content varied from 2.35 (cauliflower Giewont cultivar) to 4.40 g/100 g (green bean Rimember cultivar). The protein content varied from 1.41 (green bean Opportune cultivar) to 2.58 g/100 g (broccoli Porthenon cultivar). Bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and vitamin C, varied significantly depending on the vegetable. The content of carotenoids (β-carotene and zeaxanthin) in vegetables, in particular broccoli (Larson cultivar) and green beans (Rimember and Opportune cultivars), was lower than in outgrades. Due to the high nutrient quality of outgrades, the preparation of mechanically-formed vegetable patties and paste proceeded. According to recommendations of NRF, NAS, NDS nutrient density indices, both patties and pastes were classified as products with rich nutritional value and full-valuable components of the human diet. Moreover, food production technology utilizing vegetable outgrades can be potential solutions for food loss and waste management in gastronomy and in the food production industry
