Collisionless heating in capacitive discharges enhanced by dual-frequency excitation
We discuss collisionless electron heating in capacitive discharges excited by a combination of two disparate frequencies. By developing an analytical model, we find, contrary to expectation, that the net heating in this case is much larger than the sum of the effects occurring when the two frequencies act separately. This prediction is substantiated by kinetic simulations, which are also in excellent general quantitative agreement with the model for discharge parameters that are typical of recent experiments
Data curation standards and the messy world of social science occupational information resources
Occupational information resources – data about the characteristics of different occupational positions – play a unique role in social science research. They are of relevance across diverse research disciplines and in numerous disparate contexts. They are also very widely available, typically freely downloadable from research-oriented academic web-pages. But they are also one of the most uncoordinated types of information resource that social scientists routinely come across. In this paper we describe issues in curating occupational information resources during the GEODE research project (Grid Enabled Occupational Data Environment, http:/www.geode.stir.ac.uk). This project attempts to develop long-term standards for the distribution of occupational information resources, by providing a standardised framework electronic depository for occupational information resources, and by providing a data-indexing service, premised upon eScience middleware, which collates occupational information resources and makes them readily accessible to non-specialist social scientists
Data curation standards and social science occupational information resources
Occupational information resources - data about the characteristics of different occupational positions - are widely used in the social sciences, across a range of disciplines and international contexts. They are available in many formats, most often constituting small electronic files that are made freely downloadable from academic web-pages. However there are several challenges associated with how occupational information resources are distributed to, and exploited by, social researchers. X-ray variability analysis of a large series of XMM-Newton + NuSTAR observations of NGC 3227
We present a series of X-ray variability results from a long XMM-Newton +
NuSTAR campaign on the bright, variable AGN NGC 3227. We present an analysis of
the lightcurves, showing that the source displays typically
softer-when-brighter behaviour, although also undergoes significant spectral
hardening during one observation which we interpret as due to an occultation
event by a cloud of absorbing gas. We spectrally decompose the data and show
that the bulk of the variability is continuum-driven and, through rms
variability analysis, strongly enhanced in the soft band. We show that the
source largely conforms to linear rms-flux behaviour and we compute X-ray power
spectra, detecting moderate evidence for a bend in the power spectrum,
consistent with existing scaling relations. Additionally, we compute X-ray
Fourier time lags using both the XMM-Newton and - through maximum-likelihood
methods - NuSTAR data, revealing a strong low-frequency hard lag and evidence
for a soft lag at higher frequencies, which we discuss in terms of

Suspended liminality: Vacillating affects in cyberbullying/research
This paper develops a concept of liminal hotspots in the context of i) a secondary analysis of a cyberbullying case involving a group of school children from a Danish school, and ii) an altered auto-ethnography in which the authors ‘entangle’ their own experiences with the case analysis. These two sources are used to build an account of a liminal hotspot conceived as an occasion of troubled and suspended transformative transition in which a liminal phase is extended and remains unresolved. The altered auto-ethnography is used to explore the affectivity at play in liminal hotspots, and this liminal affectivity is characterised in terms of volatility, vacillation, suggestibility and paradox
Substitution of antibodies and receptors with molecularly imprinted polymers in enzyme-linked and fluorescent assays
A new technique for coating microtitre plates with molecularly imprinted
polymers (MIP), specific for low-molecular weight analytes (epinephrine,
atrazine) and proteins is presented. Oxidative polymerization was performed in
the presence of template; monomers: 3-aminophenylboronic acid, 3-
thiopheneboronic acid and aniline were polymerized in water and the polymers
were grafted onto the polystyrene surface of the microplates. It was found that
this process results in the creation of synthetic materials with antibody-like
binding properties. It was shown that the MIP-coated microplates are
particularly useful for assay development. The high stability of the polymers
and good reproducibility of the measurements make MIP coating an attractive
alternative to conventional antibodies or receptors used in ELISA
Theorizing dramaturgical resistance leadership from the leadership campaigns of Jeremy Corbyn
What are the practices through which resistance leadership transitions from marginality to power? We present a framework of dramaturgical resistance leadership, paying particular attention to the relational dynamics between leaders, internal factions and external stakeholders. In doing so, we draw on an ‘expanded’ social drama analysis framework informed by the work of social anthropologist Victor Turner, incorporating insights from the resistance and critical leadership studies literatures. We develop our framework through a narrative case analysis of the British Labour Party’s 2015 and 2016 internal elections of its current leader Jeremy Corbyn where we identify a space between the phases of relational crisis and redress that offers possibilities for the enhancement and growth of resistance leadership. Within this space, we identify three practices of dramaturgical resistance leadership: ‘anti-establishment leadering’, ‘organizational redrawing’, and a ‘trifold focus’. These offer a means of rethinking the purpose and role of leaders within resistance movements alongside the co-constituted relations and generative practices that enable resisting groups to gain traction
Evidence for a Truncated Accretion Disc in the Low Luminosity Seyfert Galaxy, NGC 7213?
We present the broad-band 0.6-150 keV Suzaku and Swift BAT spectra of the low
luminosity Seyfert galaxy, NGC 7213. The time-averaged continuum emission is
well fitted by a single powerlaw of photon index Gamma = 1.75 and from
consideration of the Fermi flux limit we constrain the high energy cutoff to be
350 keV < E < 25 MeV. Line emission from both near-neutral iron K_alpha at 6.39
keV and highly ionised iron, from Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi), is strongly detected
in the Suzaku spectrum, further confirming the results of previous observations
with Chandra and XMM-Newton. We find the centroid energies for the Fe_(xxv) and
Fe_(xxvi) emission to be 6.60 keV and 6.95 keV respectively, with the latter
appearing to be resolved in the Suzaku spectrum. We show that the Fe_(xxv) and
Fe_(xxvi) emission can result from a highly photo-ionised plasma of column
density N_(H) ~ 3 x 10^(23) cm^(-2). A Compton reflection component, e.g.,
originating from an optically-thick accretion disc or a Compton-thick torus,
appears either very weak or absent in this AGN, subtending < 1 sr to the X-ray
source, consistent with previous findings. Indeed the absence of either neutral
or ionised Compton reflection coupled with the lack of any relativistic Fe K
signatures in the spectrum suggests that an inner, optically-thick accretion
disc is absent in this source. Instead, the accretion disc could be truncated
with the inner regions perhaps replaced by a Compton-thin Radiatively
Inefficient Accretion Flow. Thus, the Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi) emission could
both originate in ionised material perhaps at the transition region between the
hot, inner flow and the cold, truncated accretion disc on the order of 10^(3) -
10^(4) gravitational radii from the black hole. The origin for the unresolved
neutral Fe K_alpha emission is then likely to be further out, perhaps
originating in the optical BLR or a Compton-thin pc-scale torus.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by MNRA
Shocks near Jamming
Non-linear sound is an extreme phenomenon typically observed in solids after
violent explosions. But granular media are different. Right when they jam,
these fragile and disordered solids exhibit a vanishing rigidity and sound
speed, so that even tiny mechanical perturbations form supersonic shocks. Here,
we perform simulations in which two-dimensional jammed granular packings are
dynamically compressed, and demonstrate that the elementary excitations are
strongly non-linear shocks, rather than ordinary phonons. We capture the full
dependence of the shock speed on pressure and impact intensity by a
