Organic Pollutants, Heavy Metals and Toxicity in Oil Spill impacted Salt Marsh Sediment Cores, Staten Island, New York City, USA
Sediment cores from Staten Island's salt marsh contain multiple historical oil spill events that impact ecological health. Microtox solid phase bioassay indicated moderate to high toxicity. Multiple spikes of TPH (6524 to 9586 mg/kg) and ÎŁ16 PAH (15.5 to 18.9 mg/kg) were co-incident with known oil spills. A high TPH background of 400â700 mg/kg was attributed to diffuse sources. Depth-profiled metals Cu (1243 mg/kg), Zn (1814 mg/kg), Pb (1140 mg/kg), Ni (109 mg/kg), Hg (7 mg/kg), Cd 15 (mg/kg) exceeded sediment quality guidelines confirming adverse biological effects. Changes in Pb206/207 suggested three metal contaminant sources and diatom assemblages responded to two contamination events. Organic and metal contamination in Saw Mill Creek Marsh may harm sensitive biota, we recommend caution in the management of the 20â50 cm sediment interval because disturbance could lead to remobilisation of pre-existing legacy contamination into the waterway
Evolution of density perturbations in double exponential quintessence models
In this work we investigate the evolution of matter density perturbations for
quintessence models with a self-interaction potential that is a combination of
exponentials. One of the models is based on the Einstein theory of gravity,
while the other is based on the Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory. We constrain
the parameter space of the models using the determinations for the growth rate
of perturbations derived from data of the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift
Survey.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure
Influence of Solvent Selection on the Crystallizability and Polymorphic Selectivity Associated with the Formation of the "Disappeared" Form I Polymorph of Ritonavir
The comparative crystallizability and polymorphic selectivity of ritonavir, a novel protease inhibitor for the treatment of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome, as a function of solvent selection are examined through an integrated and self-consistent experimental and computational molecular modeling study. Recrystallization at high supersaturation by rapid cooling at 283.15 K is found to produce the metastable âdisappearedâ polymorphic form I from acetone, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, and toluene solutions in contrast to ethanol which produces the stable form II. Concomitant crystallization of the other known solid forms is not found under these conditions. Isothermal crystallization studies using turbidometric detection based upon classical nucleation theory reveal that, for an equal induction time, the required driving force needed to initiate solution nucleation decreases with solubility in the order of ethanol, acetone, acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, and toluene consistent with the expected desolvation behavior predicted from the calculated solute solvation free energies. Molecular dynamics simulations of the molecular and intermolecular chemistry reveal the presence of conformational interplay between intramolecular and intermolecular interactions within the solution phase. These encompass the solvent-dependent formation of intramolecular OâH...O hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl and carbamate groups coupled with differing conformations of the hydroxylâs shielding phenyl groups. These conformational preferences and their relative interaction propensities, as a function of solvent selection, may play a rate-limiting role in the crystallization behavior by not only inhibiting to different degrees the nucleation process but also restricting the assembly of the optimal intermolecular hydrogen bonding network needed for the formation of the stable form II polymorph
Calculating the surface energies of crystals on a face-specific and whole particle basis: Case study of the α- and ÎČ-polymorphic forms of L-glutamic acid
Molecular-scale modelling for predicting surface energies on a face-specific and whole particle basis is applied to all the crystallographically-independent surfaces of L-glutamic acid forms. The predicted data is found to be in good general agreement with measured surface energies using inverse gas chromatography and Washburn capillary rise techniques with the former revealing higher values compared to the prediction, perhaps consistent with the polar (zwitterionic) nature of this material. This fusion of experimental and computational data provides a high-fidelity definition of the face-by-face breakdown of the energetic anisotropy of the crystals. There is increasing industrial interest in defining the potential impact of whole particle properties on the performance of formulated drug product and their manufacturability especially as the community accelerates the molecule to medicine journey. The overall molecular modelling approach highlights its application in designing ingredients for optimising face-specific particle surface energies for product formulatability particularly in early phase process development
Cosmology at the Millennium
One hundred years ago we did not know how stars generate energy, the age of
the Universe was thought to be only millions of years, and our Milky Way galaxy
was the only galaxy known. Today, we know that we live in an evolving and
expanding Universe comprising billions of galaxies, all held together by dark
matter. With the hot big-bang model, we can trace the evolution of the Universe
from the hot soup of quarks and leptons that existed a fraction of a second
after the beginning to the formation of galaxies a few billion years later, and
finally to the Universe we see today 13 billion years after the big bang, with
its clusters of galaxies, superclusters, voids, and great walls. The attractive
force of gravity acting on tiny primeval inhomogeneities in the distribution of
matter gave rise to all the structure seen today. A paradigm based upon deep
connections between cosmology and elementary particle physics -- inflation +
cold dark matter -- holds the promise of extending our understanding to an even
more fundamental level and much earlier times, as well as shedding light on the
unification of the forces and particles of nature. As we enter the 21st
century, a flood of observations is testing this paradigm.Comment: 44 pages LaTeX with 14 eps figures. To be published in the Centennial

Can forest management based on natural disturbances maintain ecological resilience?
Given the increasingly global stresses on forests, many ecologists argue that managers must maintain ecological resilience: the capacity of ecosystems to absorb disturbances without undergoing fundamental change. In this review we ask: Can the emerging paradigm of natural-disturbance-based management (NDBM) maintain ecological resilience in managed forests? Applying resilience theory requires careful articulation of the ecosystem state under consideration, the disturbances and stresses that affect the persistence of possible alternative states, and the spatial and temporal scales of management relevance. Implementing NDBM while maintaining resilience means recognizing that (i) biodiversity is important for long-term ecosystem persistence, (ii) natural disturbances play a critical role as a generator of structural and compositional heterogeneity at multiple scales, and (iii) traditional management tends to produce forests more homogeneous than those disturbed naturally and increases the likelihood of unexpected catastrophic change by constraining variation of key environmental processes. NDBM may maintain resilience if silvicultural strategies retain the structures and processes that perpetuate desired states while reducing those that enhance resilience of undesirable states. Such strategies require an understanding of harvesting impacts on slow ecosystem processes, such as seed-bank or nutrient dynamics, which in the long term can lead to ecological surprises by altering the forest's capacity to reorganize after disturbance
Cognitiveâbehavioral therapy in the time of coronavirus : clinician tips for working with eating disorders via telehealth when faceâtoâface meetings are not possible
Objective
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a dramatically different way of working for many therapists working with eating disorders, where telehealth has suddenly become the norm. However, many clinicians feel ill equipped to deliver therapy via telehealth, while adhering to evidenceâbased interventions. This article draws together clinician experiences of the issues that should be attended to, and how to address them within a telehealth framework.
Method
Seventy clinical colleagues of the authors were emailed and invited to share their concerns online about how to deliver cognitiveâbehavioral therapy for eating disorders (CBTâED) via telehealth, and how to adapt clinical practice to deal with the problems that they and others had encountered. After 96âhr, all the suggestions that had been shared by 22 clinicians were collated to provide timely advice for other clinicians.
Results
A range of themes emerged from the online discussion. A large proportion were general clinical and practical domains (patient and therapist concerns about telehealth; technical issues in implementing telehealth; changes in the environment), but there were also specific considerations and clinical recommendations about the delivery of CBTâED methods.
Discussion
Through interaction and sharing of ideas, clinicians across the world produced a substantial number of recommendations about how to use telehealth to work with people with eating disorders while remaining on track with evidenceâbased practice. These are shared to assist clinicians over the period of changed practice
Constraining the dark energy with galaxy clusters X-ray data
The equation of state characterizing the dark energy component is constrained
by combining Chandra observations of the X-ray luminosity of galaxy clusters
with independent measurements of the baryonic matter density and the latest
measurements of the Hubble parameter as given by the HST key project. By
assuming a spatially flat scenario driven by a "quintessence" component with an
equation of state we place the following limits on the
cosmological parameters and : (i) and (1) if the
equation of state of the dark energy is restricted to the interval (\emph{usual} quintessence) and (ii) and
() if violates the null energy condition and assume values (\emph{extended} quintessence or ``phantom'' energy). These results are in
good agreement with independent studies based on supernovae observations,
large-scale structure and the anisotropies of the cosmic background radiation.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, LaTe
Health Literacy and Demographic Disparities in HIV Care Continuum Outcomes
Studies evaluating the association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection continuum of care outcomes [antiretroviral (ART) adherence, retention in care, viral suppression] and health literacy have yielded conflicting results. Moreover, studies from the southern United States, a region of the country disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic and low health literacy, are lacking. We conducted an observational cohort study among 575 people living with HIV (PLWH) at the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Clinic (Nashville, Tennessee). Health literacy was measured using the brief health literacy screen, a short tool which can be administered verbally by trained clinical personnel. Low health literacy was associated with a lack of viral suppression, but not with poor ART adherence or poor retention. Age and racial disparities in continuum of care outcomes persisted after accounting for health literacy, suggesting that factors in addition to health literacy must be addressed in order to improve outcomes for PLWH
On exact solutions for quintessential (inflationary) cosmological models with exponential potentials
We first study dark energy models with a minimally-coupled scalar field and
exponential potentials, admitting exact solutions for the cosmological
equations: actually, it turns out that for this class of potentials the
Einstein field equations exhibit alternative Lagrangians, and are completely
integrable and separable (i.e. it is possible to integrate the system
analytically, at least by quadratures). We analyze such solutions, especially
discussing when they are compatible with a late time quintessential expansion
of the universe. As a further issue, we discuss how such quintessential scalar
fields can be connected to the inflationary phase, building up, for this class
of potentials, a quintessential inflationary scenario: actually, it turns out
that the transition from inflation toward late-time exponential quintessential
tail admits a kination period, which is an indispensable ingredient of this
kind of theoretical models. All such considerations have also been done by
including radiation into the model.Comment: Revtex4, 10 figure
