    Two-dimensional kinematics and dynamical modelling of the ‘Jackpot’ gravitational lens from deep MUSE observations

    We present results from the first spatially resolved kinematic and dynamical modelling analysis of the unique SDSSJ0946+1006 (‘Jackpot’) triple-source lens system, where a single massive foreground z = 0.222 galaxy multiple-images three background sources at different redshifts. Deep integral field unit spectroscopic data were obtained using the MUSE instrument on the VLT, which, compared to previous single-slit observations, provides full azimuthal area coverage, high sensitivity (5 h integration) and high angular resolution (0.5 arcsec full width at half-maximum). To account for the strong continuum contributions from the z = 0.609 source, a multiple-component stellar template fitting technique is adopted to fit to the spectra of both the lens galaxy and the bright lensed background arc simultaneously. Through this, we robustly measure the first and second moments of the 2D stellar kinematics out to about 10 kpc from the centre of the lens, as well as resolving the inner profile inwards to ∼1 kpc. The 2D kinematic maps show a steep velocity dispersion gradient and a clear rotational component. We constrain the characteristic properties of the stellar and dark matter (DM) mass components with a sufficiently flexible parametrised dynamical model and an imposed lensing mass and find a DM density slope of γ = 1.73+0.17 −0.26, i.e. significantly steeper than an unmodified NFW profile (γ = 1) and consistent with a contracted DM halo. Our fitted models have a lensing-equivalent density slope of η = 0.96 ± 0.02, and thus we confirm most pure lensing results in finding a near isothermal profile for this galaxy

    Gravitational imaging through a triple source plane lens: revisiting the Λ\LambdaCDM-defying dark subhalo in SDSSJ0946+1006

    The Λ\LambdaCDM paradigm successfully explains the large-scale structure of the Universe, but is less well constrained on sub-galactic scales. Gravitational lens modelling has been used to measure the imprints of dark substructures on lensed arcs, testing the small-scale predictions of Λ\LambdaCDM. However, the methods required for these tests are subject to degeneracies among the lens mass model and the source light profile. We present a case study of the unique compound gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, wherein a dark, massive substructure has been detected, whose reported high concentration would be unlikely in a Λ\LambdaCDM universe. For the first time, we model the first two background sources in both I- and U-band HST imaging, as well as VLT-MUSE emission line data for the most distant source. We recover a lensing perturber at a 5.9σ5.9\sigma confidence level with mass log10(Msub/M)=9.20.1+0.4\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{sub}/M_{\odot})=9.2^{+0.4}_{-0.1} and concentration log10c=2.40.3+0.5\log_{10}c=2.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}. The concentration is more consistent with CDM subhalos than previously reported, and the mass is compatible with that of a dwarf satellite galaxy whose flux is undetectable in the data at the location of the perturber. A wandering black hole with mass log10(MBH/M)=8.90.1+0.2\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{BH}/M_{\odot})=8.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1} is a viable alternative model. We systematically investigate alternative assumptions about the complexity of the mass distribution and source reconstruction; in all cases the subhalo is detected at around the 5σ\geq5\sigma level. However, the detection significance can be altered substantially (up to 11.3σ11.3\sigma) by alternative choices for the source regularisation scheme.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, 5 appendice

It brings together the capabilities of the industry, academics, hospitals, and regulators within a common platform in order to scope the solid understanding of the major issues, which will underpin the progress towards the future of paediatric medicines we want.The EuPFI was formed in parallel to the adoption of regulations within the EU and USA and has served as a community that drives research and dissemination through publications and the organisation of annual conferences. The membership and reach of this group have grown since its inception in 2007 and continue to develop and evolve to meet the continuing needs and ambitions of research into and development of age appropriate medicines. Five diverse workstreams (age-appropriate medicines, Biopharmaceutics, Administration Devices, Excipients and Taste Assessment & Taste Masking (TATM)) direct specific workpackages on behalf of the EuPFI. Furthermore, EuPFI interacts with multiple diverse professional groups across the globe to ensure efficient working in the area of paediatric medicines. Strong commitment and active involvement of all EuPFI stakeholders have proved to be vital to effectively address knowledge gaps related to paediatric medicines, discuss potential areas for further research and identify issues that need more attention and analysis in the future.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    From the Yellow Springs to the Land of Immortality

    The Yellow Springs is a vivid metaphorical reference to the final destination of a mortal being and the dwelling place of a departed one in ancient China. In the writings of philosophers, historians, and poets during the long period of Chinese history, the Yellow Springs is not only considered as an underground physical locus where a grave is situated, but also an emotionally charged space invoke grieving, longing, and memory for the departed loved ones. The subterranean dwelling at the Yellow Springs is both a destination for a departed mortal being and an intermediary place to an ideal and imaginative realm, the land of immortality where the soul would enjoy eternity. From the Yellow Springs to the Land of Immortality is an exhibition that highlights sixteen carefully selected artworks from Gettysburg College’s Special Collections; each object embodies the perceptions and ritual practices of the rich funerary culture in the historical period in China, ranging from the late second millennium BCE to the beginning of the early twentieth century. These artifacts represent various artistic traditions and fabrication techniques — including jade carving, bronze casting, glazed pottery making — and most importantly, offer a glimpse of how art and artifacts are employed as a means to connect the living with the soul of the departed one in the Yellow Springs. Archaeo- logical discoveries in the past four decades in China have provided rich information that helps contextualize the sixteen artworks, as well as intimate knowledge about how the objects might “perform” in the life and afterlife of the individuals in the past. The practice of burying goods alongside departed loved ones has had a long tradition in China. The artworks included in this exhibition catalogue, encompassing the major dynasties in Chinese history, epitomize such a practice from a historical point of view. The bronze jue of the Shang dynasty (mid-16th c.-1046 BCE), and the miniature bell, a replica of yong bronze bell of the Zhou dynasty (1045-256 BCE), are not only ceremonial paraphernalia used by elites in ancestral sacrifices during the Bronze Age, but also material manifestations of ritual and music, the very foundations of ancient Chinese civilization. Comparable examples found in Bronze Age tombs illustrate the idea to connect the deceased, often the owner of these ritual objects, to the ancestors in the netherworld as they themselves were transitioned into the role of ancestors through a series of funerary ceremonies.     Productivity costs from a dengue episode in Asia: a systematic literature review

    Background Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection which has been estimated to cause a global economic burden of US8.9billionperyear.40MethodWesearchedPubMedandWebofKnowledgewithoutdateandlanguagerestrictionsusingtermsrelatedtodengueandcostandeconomicsburden.ThetitlesandabstractsofpublicationsrelatedtoAsiawerescreenedtoidentifyrelevantstudies.Thereportedproductivitylossesandcostsofnonfatalandfataldengueepisodeswerethendescribedandcompared.Costswereadjustedforinflationto2017prices.ResultsWereviewed33relevantarticles,ofwhich20studiesreportedtheproductivitylosses,and31studiesreportedproductivitycosts.TheproductivitycostsvariedbetweenUS8.9 billion per year. 40% of this estimate was due to what are known as productivity costs (the costs associated with productivity loss from both paid and unpaid work that results from illness, treatment or premature death). Although productivity costs account for a significant proportion of the estimated economic burden of dengue, the methods used to calculate them are often very variable within health economic studies. The aim of this review was to systematically examine the current estimates of the productivity costs associated with dengue episodes in Asia and to increase awareness surrounding how productivity costs are estimated. Method We searched PubMed and Web of Knowledge without date and language restrictions using terms related to dengue and cost and economics burden. The titles and abstracts of publications related to Asia were screened to identify relevant studies. The reported productivity losses and costs of non-fatal and fatal dengue episodes were then described and compared. Costs were adjusted for inflation to 2017 prices. Results We reviewed 33 relevant articles, of which 20 studies reported the productivity losses, and 31 studies reported productivity costs. The productivity costs varied between US6.7–1445.9 and US3.81332forhospitalizedandoutpatientnonfatalepisodes,respectively.TheproductivitycostassociatedwithfataldengueepisodesvariedbetweenUS3.8–1332 for hospitalized and outpatient non-fatal episodes, respectively. The productivity cost associated with fatal dengue episodes varied between US12,035-1,453,237. A large degree of this variation was due to the range of different countries being investigated and their corresponding economic status. However, estimates for a given country still showed notable variation. Conclusion We found that the estimated productivity costs associated with dengue episodes in Asia are notable. However, owing to the significant variation in methodology and approaches applied, the reported productivity costs of dengue episodes were often not directly comparable across studies. More consistent and transparent methodology regarding the estimation of productivity costs would help the estimates of the economic burden of dengue be more accurate and comparable across studies

    Ketamine effects on memory reconsolidation favor a learning model of delusions.

    Delusions are the persistent and often bizarre beliefs that characterise psychosis. Previous studies have suggested that their emergence may be explained by disturbances in prediction error-dependent learning. Here we set up complementary studies in order to examine whether such a disturbance also modulates memory reconsolidation and hence explains their remarkable persistence. First, we quantified individual brain responses to prediction error in a causal learning task in 18 human subjects (8 female). Next, a placebo-controlled within-subjects study of the impact of ketamine was set up on the same individuals. We determined the influence of this NMDA receptor antagonist (previously shown to induce aberrant prediction error signal and lead to transient alterations in perception and belief) on the evolution of a fear memory over a 72 hour period: they initially underwent Pavlovian fear conditioning; 24 hours later, during ketamine or placebo administration, the conditioned stimulus (CS) was presented once, without reinforcement; memory strength was then tested again 24 hours later. Re-presentation of the CS under ketamine led to a stronger subsequent memory than under placebo. Moreover, the degree of strengthening correlated with individual vulnerability to ketamine's psychotogenic effects and with prediction error brain signal. This finding was partially replicated in an independent sample with an appetitive learning procedure (in 8 human subjects, 4 female). These results suggest a link between altered prediction error, memory strength and psychosis. They point to a core disruption that may explain not only the emergence of delusional beliefs but also their persistence
