THREE NEW NEPENTHES FROM SULAWESI TENGAH
Three new high mountain forest taxa of Nepenthaceae are described from Central Sulawesi. The new species are Nepenthes glabratus, N. hamatus and N. infundibuliformis. Existing material at Herbarium Bogoriense indicated that all three are widespread in Central Sulawes
First year student expectations: Results from a university-wide student survey
Although much has been written on the first-year experience of students at higher education institutions, less attention has been directed to the expectations of students when they enter an institution for the first time. This paper provides additional insights into the expectations of students at an Australian university and highlights areas in which students’ expectations may not necessarily align with the realities of common university practices. ESR modes in a Strong-Leg Ladder in the Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Phase
Magnetic excitations in the strong-leg quantum spin ladder compound
(CHN)CuBr (known as DIMPY) in the field-induced
Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid phase are studied by means of high-field
electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The presence of a gapped ESR mode
with unusual non-linear frequency-field dependence is revealed experimentally.
Using a combination of analytic and exact diagonalization methods, we compute
the dynamical structure factor and identify this mode with longitudinal
excitations in the antisymmetric channel. We argue that these excitations
constitute a fingerprint of the spin dynamics in a strong-leg spin-1/2
Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder and owe its ESR observability to the
uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction
Magnetothermal transport in the spin-1/2 chains of copper pyrazine dinitrate
We present experiments on the thermal transport in the spin-1/2 chain
compound copper pyrazine dinitrate Cu(C_4 H_4 N_2)(NO_3)_2. The heat
conductivity shows a surprisingly strong dependence on the applied magnetic
field B, characterized at low temperatures by two main features. The first one
appearing at low B is a characteristic dip located at mu_B B ~ k_B T, that may
arise from Umklapp scattering. The second one is a plateau-like feature in the
quantum critical regime, mu_B |B-B_c| < k_B T, where B_c is the saturation
field at T=0. The latter feature clearly points towards a momentum and field
independent mean free path of the spin excitations, contrary to theoretical

Successful innominate thromboembolectomy of a paradoxic embolus
AbstractA 54 year-old man had symptoms of acute right hemispheric cerebral ischemia. He was initially considered for participation in a trial of early thrombolysis in stroke, but an innominate artery embolus was found with no apparent arterial source. The embolus was removed by means of a combined brachial and carotid bifurcation approach to protect the cerebral vasculature from embolic fragmentation during extraction. Further investigation revealed deep venous thrombosis, evidence of pulmonary emboli, and a patent foramen ovale, supporting a diagnosis of paradoxic embolus. Additional treatment included anticoagulation and placement of an inferior vena caval filter. The unusual condition of paradoxic embolus is reviewed, and the management of this patient is discussed. Field-dependent thermal transport in the Haldane chain compound NENP
We present a study of the magnetic field-dependent thermal transport in the
spin S=1 chain material Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4) (NENP). The measured thermal
conductivity is found to be very sensitive to the field-induced changes in the
spin excitation spectrum. The magnetic contribution to the total heat
conductivity is analyzed in terms of a quasiparticle model, and we obtain a
temperature and momentum independent mean free path. This implies that the
motion of quasiparticles is effectively three dimensional despite the tiny

Distinct patterns of thought mediate the link between brain functional connectomes and well-being
Ongoing thought patterns constitute important aspects of both healthy and abnormal human cognition. However, the neural mechanisms behind these daily experiences and their contribution to well-being remain a matter of debate. Here, using resting-state fMRI and retrospective thought sampling in a large neurotypical cohort (n = 211), we identified two distinct patterns of thought, broadly describing the participants’ current concerns and future plans, that significantly explained variability in the individual functional connectomes. Consistent with the view that ongoing thoughts are an emergent property of multiple neural systems, network-based analysis highlighted the central importance of both unimodal and transmodal cortices in the generation of these experiences. Importantly, while state-dependent current concerns predicted better psychological health, mediating the effect of functional connectomes, trait-level future plans were related to better social health, yet with no mediatory influence. Collectively, we show that ongoing thoughts can influence the link between brain physiology and well-being
Perceptions Of School By Two Teenage Boys With Asperger Syndrome And Their Mothers: A Qualitative Study
This qualitative study aimed to develop an understanding of the challenges faced by teenage boys with Asperger syndrome and their mothers. A case study approach was used to collect data from two 13-year-old boys who have Asperger syndrome and their mothers in Queensland, Australia. Data were collected through the use of semi¬structured interviews. The words of the boys and their mothers provide a valuable insight into the personal experiences and feelings of the par¬ticipants. An inductive approach to data analysis identified four themes: (1) developmental differences; (2) problems associated with the general characteristics of Asperger syndrome (i.e. communication and social difficulties, restricted range of interests, a need for routine); (3) stress; and (4) 'masquerading'. The first three themes relate strongly to the current literature, but the emergence of masquerading is of particular interest in developing a fuller understanding of the experiences of individuals with Asperger syndrome at school
