First year student expectations: Results from a university-wide student survey
Although much has been written on the first-year experience of students at higher education institutions, less attention has been directed to the expectations of students when they enter an institution for the first time. This paper provides additional insights into the expectations of students at an Australian university and highlights areas in which students’ expectations may not necessarily align with the realities of common university practices. By providing opportunities for students to articulate their expectations, staff are able to use the responses for a constructive dialogue and work towards a more positive alignment between perceived expectations and levels of student satisfaction with their experience.Geoffrey Crisp, Edward Palmer, Deborah Turnbull, Ted Nettelbeck, Lynn Ward, Amanda LeCouteur, Aspa Sarris, Peter Strelan, and Luke Schneide
Developing collaborative partnerships with culturally and linguistically diverse families during the IEP process
Family participation in the special education process has been federally mandated for 40 years, and educators recognize that effective collaboration with their students’ families leads to improved academic and social outcomes for students. However, while some family-school relationships are positive and collaborative, many are not, particularly for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families. This article provides practice guidelines based in research for teachers who seek to improve their practices when working with CLD families who have children served by special education
Generalised boundary conditions for hydrogen transport at crack tips
We present a generalised framework for resolving the electrochemistry-diffusion interface and modelling hydrogen transport near a crack tip. The adsorption and absorption kinetics are captured by means of Neumann-type generalised boundary conditions. The diffusion model includes the role of trapping, with a constant or evolving trap density, and the influence of the hydrostatic stress. Both conventional plasticity and strain gradient plasticity are used to model the mechanical behaviour of the solid. Notable differences are found in the estimated crack tip hydrogen concentrations when comparing with the common procedure of prescribing a constant hydrogen concentration at the crack surfaces
Dynamics of a Heisenberg spin chain in the quantum critical regime: NMR experiment versus effective field theory
A comprehensive comparison between the magnetic field- and
temperature-dependent low frequency spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic
spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain (AFHC) system copper pyrazine dinitrate, probed via
the 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate 1/T1, and the field
theoretical approach in the Luttinger liquid (LL) regime has been performed. We
have found a very good agreement between the experiment and theory in the
investigated temperature and field range. Our results demonstrate how strongly
the quantum critical point affects the spin dynamics of Heisenberg spin chain
compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Optical properties of a light-emitting polymer directly patterned by soft lithography

The following article appeared in Applied Physics Letters 81 (2002) and may be found at http://link.aip.org/link/?APPLAB/81/1955/1We present the optical properties of a directly patterned light-emitting polymer. The patterned poly(2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-paraphenylenevinylene film is fabricated using hot embossing lithography. The effect of the embossed microstructure on the light emitted from the polymer is examined by measuring the angle-dependent photoluminescence and its photonic band structure. The imposed grating modifies the emitted light by Bragg scattering into free space light that would otherwise be trapped as waveguide modes. This simple patterning technique may find application in improving the performance of light-emitting polymer devices
Cholangitis and Budd Chiari Syndrome as Complications of Simple Cystic Liver Disease
We report the case of a 63 year old woman who developed the complications of cholangitis and Budd
Chiari syndrome secondary to polycystic disease of the liver. The two complications were not present
simultaneously, and both resolved after decompression of the liver cysts
Dynamics of the two-dimensional S=1/2 dimer system (C5H6N2F)2CuCl4
Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study a quantum S=1/2
antiferromagnetic Heisenberg system-Bis(2-amino-5-fluoropyridinium)
Tetrachlorocuprate(II). The magnetic excitation spectrum was shown to be
dominated by long-lived excitations with an energy gap as 1.07(3) meV. The
measured dispersion relation is consistent with a simple two-dimensional square
lattice of weakly-coupled spin dimers. Comparing the data to a random phase
approximation treatment of this model gives the intra-dimer and inter-dimer
exchange constants J=1.45(2) meV and J'=0.31(3) meV, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
High-speed, high-frequency ultrasound, \u3ci\u3ein utero\u3c/i\u3e vector-flow imaging of mouse embryos
Real-time imaging of the embryonic murine cardiovascular system is challenging due to the small size of the mouse embryo and rapid heart rate. High-frequency, linear-array ultrasound systems designed for small-animal imaging provide high-frame-rate and Doppler modes but are limited in regards to the field of view that can be imaged at fine-temporal and -spatial resolution. Here, a plane-wave imaging method was used to obtain high-speed image data from in utero mouse embryos and multi-angle, vector-flow algorithms were applied to the data to provide information on blood flow patterns in major organs. An 18-MHz linear array was used to acquire plane-wave data at absolute frame rates ≥10 kHz using a set of fixed transmission angles. After beamforming, vector-flow processing and image compounding, effective frame rates were on the order of 2 kHz. Data were acquired from the embryonic liver, heart and umbilical cord. Vector-flow results clearly revealed the complex nature of blood-flow patterns in the embryo with fine-temporal and -spatial resolution
Photonic band structure and emission characteristics of a metal-backed polymeric distributed feedback laser

The following article appeared in Applied Physics Letters 81 (2002) and may be found at http://link.aip.org/link/?APPLAB/81/954/1Optical losses associated with the metallic contacts necessary for charge injection are an obstacle to the development of an electrically pumped polymer laser. We show that it may be possible to overcome these losses by demonstrating the operation of a distributed-feedback polymer laser fabricated upon a silver substrate. The device lasing threshold was ~150 times greater than that of an otherwise similar metal-free device, though similar to early polymer lasers. The device emission characteristics correlated well with the measured photonic band structure, allowing an explanation of the effect of the microstructure on device operation
