    Get PDF
A summary of the findings of the data management group of the orbital operations study is presented. Element interfaces, alternate approaches, design concepts, operational procedures, functional requirements, design influences, and approach selection are described. The following interfacing activities are considered: (1) communications, (2) rendezvous, (3) stationkeeping, and (4) detached element operations

Current research on aviation weather (bibliography), 1979

    Get PDF
The titles, managers, supporting organizations, performing organizations, investigators and objectives of 127 current research projects in advanced meteorological instruments, forecasting, icing, lightning, visibility, low level wind shear, storm hazards/severe storms, and turbulence are tabulated and cross-referenced. A list of pertinent reference material produced through the above tabulated research activities is given. The acquired information is assembled in bibliography form to provide a readily available source of information in the area of aviation meteorology

Pilot-aircraft system reponse to wind shear

    Get PDF
The nonlinear aircraft motion and automatic control model is expanded to incorporate the human pilot into simulations of aircraft response to wind to wind shear. The human pilot is described by a constant gains lag filter. Two runs are carried out using pilot transfer functions. Fixed-stick, autopilot, and manned computer simulations are made with an aircraft having characteristics of a small commuter type aircraft flown through longitudinal winds measured by a Doppler radar beamed along the glide slope. Simulations are also made flying an aircraft through sinusoidal head wind and tail wind shears at the phugoid frequency to evaluate the response of manned aircraft in thunderstorm wind environments

Feasibility study of a procedure to detect and warn of low level wind shear

    Get PDF
A Doppler radar system which provides an aircraft with advanced warning of longitudinal wind shear is described. This system uses a Doppler radar beamed along the glide slope linked with an on line microprocessor containing a two dimensional, three degree of freedom model of the motion of an aircraft including pilot/autopilot control. The Doppler measured longitudinal glide slope winds are entered into the aircraft motion model, and a simulated controlled aircraft trajectory is calculated. Several flight path deterioration parameters are calculated from the computed aircraft trajectory information. The aircraft trajectory program, pilot control models, and the flight path deterioration parameters are discussed. The performance of the computer model and a test pilot in a flight simulator through longitudinal and vertical wind fields characteristic of a thunderstorm wind field are compared

Extension of multigrid methodology to supersonic/hypersonic 3-D viscous flows

    Get PDF
A multigrid acceleration technique developed for solving 3-D Navier-Stokes equations for subsonic/transonic flows was extended to supersonic/hypersonic flows. An explicit multistage Runge-Kutta type of time stepping scheme is used as the basic algorithm in conjunction with the multigrid scheme. Solutions were obtained for a blunt conical frustum at Mach 6 to demonstrate the applicability of the multigrid scheme to high speed flows. Computations were performed for a generic High Speed Civil Transport configuration designed to cruise at Mach 3. These solutions show both the efficiency and accuracy of the present scheme for computing high speed viscous flows over configurations of practical interest

Cerebellar mutism in children: report of six cases and potential mechanisms.

    Get PDF
Cerebellar mutism is a rare finding associated with resection of posterior fossa tumors or cerebellar hemorrhages. We reviewed the medical records of six children, aged 6 to 12 years, who developed cerebellar mutism after resection of a posterior fossa mass or as a result of posterior fossa trauma. From 1989 to 1994, 210 children underwent posterior fossa resection at our institution, and four developed mutism (an incidence of 1.6%). All four patients had primitive neuroectodermal tumors. The fifth patient experienced trauma, and another patient had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). In four children, hydrocephalus developed as a result of their tumor or AVM. Four developed cerebellar mutism 24 to 48 hours after surgery or trauma, and one developed cerebellar mutism 5 days after surgery, coincident with hydrocephalus. In one, mutism occurred after a second resection was performed for a recurrence of his posterior fossa tumor. Cerebellar mutism lasted 10 days in one patient and 2 to 8 weeks in the other four. Dysarthria was apparent in four patients during the recovery phase. We suggest trauma to the dentate nucleus and/or its outflow tract, the superior cerebellar peduncle, as a cause of reversible mutism. Because posterior fossa tumors are common in children, mutism should be recognized as an important side effect of surgery

Accuracy of schemes for the Euler equations with non-uniform meshes

    Get PDF
The effect of non-uniform grids on the solution of the Euler equations is analyzed. A Runge-Kutta type scheme based on a finite volume formulation is considered. It is shown that for arbitrary grids the scheme can be inconsistent even though it is second-order accurate for uniform grids. An improvement is suggested which leads to at least first-order accuracy for general grids. Test cases are presented in both two- and three-space dimensions. Applications to finite difference and implicit algorithms are also given
