    New Exhibition Hall 3 in Frankfurt – Case History of a Combined Pile-Raft Foundation Subjected to Horizontal Load

    Concerning the load bearing behaviour of vertical loaded Combined Pile-Raft Foundations (CPRFs) many studies and publications are available whereas for CPRFs subjected to horizontal or inclined loads scientific results or case histories are very rare. But also for horizontal loading it is possible to obtain a very economic foundation design and to reduce the movements by using a CPRF. Following a theoretical illustration of the load bearing behaviour of a CPRF subjected to horizontal loads the paper is focused on the new exhibition hall 3 in Frankfurt am Main. With a length of 210 m, a width of 130 m and a height of 45 m it is one of the biggest exhibition halls in Europe. The high horizontal loads resulting from the arch thrust of the roof with a free span of 165 m are transferred to the subsoil by two CPRFs. The structure of the hall, the design concept of the foundation, the subsoil conditions and some aspects of construction are described. During the construction process of the hall and afterwards the foundation was observed with an extensive geotechnical measurement program. The measurement program and the results of the measurements are described and valuated

    Thermopower of a superconducting single-electron transistor

    We present a linear-response theory for the thermopower of a single-electron transistor consisting of a superconducting island weakly coupled to two normal-conducting leads (NSN SET). The thermopower shows oscillations with the same periodicity as the conductance and is rather sensitive to the size of the superconducting gap. In particular, the previously studied sawtooth-like shape of the thermopower for a normal-conducting single-electron device is qualitatively changed even for small gap energies.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Loss Analysis for Laser Separated Solar Cells

    AbstractHalf-cell modules are promising candidates for new innovative module designs as they offer major advantages. Modified connection schemes reduce the serial resistance losses yielding a higher overall module performance. The reduced size of the cells allows a more flexible module design that is needed for special applications such as implementations on curved surface. Furthermore, a better performance under partial shading can be achieved. However, these advantages lead to a benefit only if the losses induced by the cell separation process are negligible. In this work, we study the different sources of power reduction, i.e. increased shunting and recombination, for mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline silicon solar cells separated using different laser process parameters. It is shown that recombination plays the major role for an optimized laser separation process. Additionally we identify the laser scribing process as the major source of losses in comparison to the mechanical breaking

    Reactive Flow Simulation of Micromixers Based On Grid Deformation Techniques

    Process intensification of engineering applications in the framework of reacting flows in micromixer devices attracts the attention of engineers and scientists from various fields. With the steadily increasing available computational resources the traditional experimentally supported investigations may be extended by computational ones. For this purpose, a simulation framework based on state of the art numerical techniques extended with special grid deformation techniques has been developed. Its validation in terms of comparison with computational and experimental results in reacting, as well as in non-reacting frameworks has been performed on the basis of the T-mixer, and SuperFocus mixer, respectively. The computational efficiency of the developed tool is shown to be applicable for optimization tasks, such as reverse engineering purposes

    Fate of iPSCs Derived from Azoospermic and Fertile Men following Xenotransplantation to Murine Seminiferous Tubules

    SummaryHistorically, spontaneous deletions and insertions have provided means to probe germline developmental genetics in Drosophila, mouse and other species. Here, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines were derived from infertile men with deletions that encompass three Y chromosome azoospermia factor (AZF) regions and are associated with production of few or no sperm but normal somatic development. AZF-deleted iPSC lines were compromised in germ cell development in vitro. Undifferentiated iPSCs transplanted directly into murine seminiferous tubules differentiated extensively to germ-cell-like cells (GCLCs) that localized near the basement membrane, demonstrated morphology indistinguishable from fetal germ cells, and expressed germ-cell-specific proteins diagnostic of primordial germ cells. Alternatively, all iPSCs that exited tubules formed primitive tumors. iPSCs with AZF deletions produced significantly fewer GCLCs in vivo with distinct defects in gene expression. Findings indicate that xenotransplantation of human iPSCs directs germ cell differentiation in a manner dependent on donor genetic status

    Phase 3 trials of ixekizumab in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis

    BACKGROUND Two phase 3 trials (UNCOVER-2 and UNCOVER-3) showed that at 12 weeks of treatment, ixekizumab, a monoclonal antibody against interleukin-17A, was superior to placebo and etanercept in the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. We report the 60-week data from the UNCOVER-2 and UNCOVER-3 trials, as well as 12-week and 60-week data from a third phase 3 trial, UNCOVER-1. METHODS We randomly assigned 1296 patients in the UNCOVER-1 trial, 1224 patients in the UNCOVER-2 trial, and 1346 patients in the UNCOVER-3 trial to receive subcutaneous injections of placebo (placebo group), 80 mg of ixekizumab every 2 weeks after a starting dose of 160 mg (2-wk dosing group), or 80 mg of ixekizumab every 4 weeks after a starting dose of 160 mg (4-wk dosing group). Additional cohorts in the UNCOVER-2 and UNCOVER-3 trials were randomly assigned to receive 50 mg of etanercept twice weekly. At week 12 in the UNCOVER-3 trial, the patients entered a long-term extension period during which they received 80 mg of ixekizumab every 4 weeks through week 60; at week 12 in the UNCOVER-1 and UNCOVER-2 trials, the patients who had a response to ixekizumab (defined as a static Physicians Global Assessment [sPGA] score of 0 [clear] or 1 [minimal psoriasis]) were randomly reassigned to receive placebo, 80 mg of ixekizumab every 4 weeks, or 80 mg of ixekizumab every 12 weeks through week 60. Coprimary end points were the percentage of patients who had a score on the sPGA of 0 or 1 and a 75% or greater reduction from baseline in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 75) at week 12. RESULTS In the UNCOVER-1 trial, at week 12, the patients had better responses to ixekizumab than to placebo; in the 2-wk dosing group, 81.8% had an sPGA score of 0 or 1 and 89.1% had a PASI 75 response; in the 4-wk dosing group, the respective rates were 76.4% and 82.6%; and in the placebo group, the rates were 3.2% and 3.9% (P<0.001 for all comparisons of ixekizumab with placebo). In the UNCOVER-1 and UNCOVER-2 trials, among the patients who were randomly reassigned at week 12 to receive 80 mg of ixekizumab every 4 weeks, 80 mg of ixekizumab every 12 weeks, or placebo, an sPGA score of 0 or 1 was maintained by 73.8%, 39.0%, and 7.0% of the patients, respectively. Patients in the UNCOVER-3 trial received continuous treatment of ixekizumab from weeks 0 through 60, and at week 60, at least 73% had an sPGA score of 0 or 1 and at least 80% had a PASI 75 response. Adverse events reported during ixekizumab use included neutropenia, candidal infections, and inflammatory bowel disease. CONCLUSIONS In three phase 3 trials involving patients with psoriasis, ixekizumab was effective through 60 weeks of treatment. As with any treatment, the benefits need to be weighed against the risks of adverse events. The efficacy and safety of ixekizumab beyond 60 weeks of treatment are not yet known
