On the central Baltic Shield, the concept of drainage patterns can be extended to smaller scales in which case many cultural features become involved to the spatial patterns influenced by bedrock structure. Features resulting from agriculture activity and timbering often exaggerate the influence of the bedrock on the image texture

    The author has identified the following significant results. A combined analysis of LANDSAT 1 imagery, aeromagnetic and other maps, and aerial photos has revealed a dense network of bedrock fractures in northern Finland. They form several fracturing zones, which obviously represent surficial manifestations of major fractures. The fractures follow, in general, the eight main trends of crustal shear characteristics of the Baltic Shield, but show distinct deviations from them in detail. The major fracture zones divide the bedrock into a mosaic of polygonal blocks, which in many cases coincide with the main rock units of the area and are characterized by different patterns of internal fracturing. Known mineralizations show a tendency to concentrate along the fracture zones. Optical filtering of original LANDSAT images might provide a rapid tool for the analysis of major structural trends in extensive areas such as shields or entire continents

    The author has identified the following significant results. Several regional lineaments appear to correlate with the distribution of ore deposits and showings. Combined study of LANDSAT summer and winter mosaics and color composites of geological, geomorphological, and geophysical maps makes the correlation more perceptible. The revealed pattern of significant lineaments in northern Finland is fairly regular. The most significant lineaments seen in LANDSAT mosaics are not detectable in single images

    The first close-up of the "flip-flop" phenomenon in a single star

    We present temperature maps of the active late-type giant FK Com which exhibit the first imagining record of the ``flip-flop'' phenomenon in a single star. The phenomenon, in which the main part of the spot activity shifts 180 degrees in longitude, discovered a decade ago in FK Com, was reported later also in a number of RS CVn binaries and a single young dwarf. With the surface images obtained right before and after the ``flip-flop'', we clearly show that the ``flip-flop'' phenomenon in FK Com is caused by changing the relative strengths of the spot groups at the two active longitudes, with no actual spot movements across the stellar surface, i.e. exactly as it happens in other active stars.Comment: 4 pages, accepted by A&A Letter

    Radio-frequency Bloch-transistor electrometer

    A quantum-limited electrometer based on charge modulation of the Josephson supercurrent in the Bloch transistor inserted into a superconducting ring is proposed. As this ring is inductive coupled to a high-Q resonance tank circuit, the variations of the charge on the transistor island (input signal) are converted into variations of amplitude and phase of radio-frequency oscillations in the tank. These variations are amplified and then detected. The output noise, the back-action fluctuations and their cross-correlation are computed. It is shown that our device enables measurements of the charge with a sensitivity which is determined by the energy resolution of its amplifier, that can be reduced down to the standard quantum limit of \hbar/2. On the basis of this setup a "back-action-evading" scheme of the charge measurements is proposed.Comment: 5 pages incl. 2 figure

    Parity Effect and Charge Binding Transition in Submicron Josephson Junction Arrays

    We reconsider the issue of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition into an insulating state in the Coulomb-dominated Josephson junction arrays. We show that previously predicted picture of the Cooper-pair BKT transtion at T = T_2 is valid only under the condition that T_2 is considerably below the parity-effect temperature (which is usually almost 10 times below the value of superconductive transition temperature), and even in this case it is not a rigorous phase transition but only a crossover, whereas the real phase transition takes place at T_1 = T_2/4. Our theory is in agreement with available experimental data on Coulomb-dominated Josephson arrays and also sheds some light on the origin of unusual reentrant temperature dependence of resistivity in the array with nearly-criticial ratio of Coulomb to Josephson energies.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, to be published in JETP Letters, April 9

    Parity-Affected Superconductivity in Ultrasmall Metallic Grains

    We investigate the breakdown of BCS superconductivity in {\em ultra}\/small metallic grains as a function of particle size (characterized by the mean spacing dd between discrete electronic eigenstates), and the parity (PP = even/odd) of the number of electrons on the island. Assuming equally spaced levels, we solve the parity-dependent BCS gap equation for the order parameter ΔP(d,T)\Delta_P (d,T). Both the T=0T=0 critical level spacing dc,Pd_{c,P} and the critical temperature Tc,P(d)T_{c,P} (d) at which ΔP=0\Delta_P = 0 are parity dependent, and both are so much smaller in the odd than the even case that these differences should be measurable in current experiments.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 1 encapsulated postscript figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
