    Toward a Framework of E-Business Strategy: A Case Study Approach

    E-business is erasing the typical boundaries of space, time, organization and community with shared interest and cooperation. The two most critical features of e-business practices are: (1) the unique capacity for customization, and (2) the trust-based sharing of information along supply chains. E-business strategy should be particularly effective for globalization. The case of Haier from China suggests that legacy firms need to develop e-business strategy to compete in the Internet Age. However, e-business must be built on a solid basis of sound business practices. The case of Haier also suggests that companies need to be creative when formulating e-business strategies for operations in the developing countries where infrastructure is underdeveloped. Further, strategic alliances between local and multinational firms are imperative for e-business in the developing countries such as China

    Survey and Method for Determination of Trajectory Predictor Requirements

    A survey of air-traffic-management researchers, representing a broad range of automation applications, was conducted to document trajectory-predictor requirements for future decision-support systems. Results indicated that the researchers were unable to articulate a basic set of trajectory-prediction requirements for their automation concepts. Survey responses showed the need to establish a process to help developers determine the trajectory-predictor-performance requirements for their concepts. Two methods for determining trajectory-predictor requirements are introduced. A fast-time simulation method is discussed that captures the sensitivity of a concept to the performance of its trajectory-prediction capability. A characterization method is proposed to provide quicker, yet less precise results, based on analysis and simulation to characterize the trajectory-prediction errors associated with key modeling options for a specific concept. Concept developers can then identify the relative sizes of errors associated with key modeling options, and qualitatively determine which options lead to significant errors. The characterization method is demonstrated for a case study involving future airport surface traffic management automation. Of the top four sources of error, results indicated that the error associated with accelerations to and from turn speeds was unacceptable, the error associated with the turn path model was acceptable, and the error associated with taxi-speed estimation was of concern and needed a higher fidelity concept simulation to obtain a more precise resul

    Transaction Risk Management in Online Auctions

    The scenario of business sellers utilizing online auction markets to reach consumers and sell new products is becoming increasingly commonplace. We propose a class of risk management tools, loosely based on the concept of financial options, that can be employed by such sellers. We examine market conditions, and risk and option pricing scenarios where writing options is beneficial to sellers, and purchasing options is beneficial to buyers. We provide a framework to analyze the value proposition of options to potential buyers, option holder behavior implications on auction processes, and seller strategies to write and price options that maximize potential revenues. Preliminary results based on actual auction data suggest that options can provide significant benefits under certain conditions

    Positional specificity of different transcription factor classes within enhancers

    Gene expression is controlled by sequence-specific transcription factors (TFs), which bind to regulatory sequences in DNA. TF binding occurs in nucleosome-depleted regions of DNA (NDRs), which generally encompass regions with lengths similar to those protected by nucleosomes. However, less is known about where within these regions specific TFs tend to be found. Here, we characterize the positional bias of inferred binding sites for 103 TFs within ∼500,000 NDRs across 47 cell types. We find that distinct classes of TFs display different binding preferences: Some tend to have binding sites toward the edges, some toward the center, and some at other positions within the NDR. These patterns are highly consistent across cell types, suggesting that they may reflect TF-specific intrinsic structural or functional characteristics. In particular, TF classes with binding sites at NDR edges are enriched for those known to interact with histones and chromatin remodelers, whereas TFs with central enrichment interact with other TFs and cofactors such as p300. Our results suggest distinct regiospecific binding patterns and functions of TF classes within enhancers.     Iron deposition is independent of cellular inflammation in a cerebral model of multiple sclerosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Perivenular inflammation is a common early pathological feature in multiple sclerosis (MS). A recent hypothesis stated that CNS inflammation is induced by perivenular iron deposits that occur in response to altered blood flow in MS subjects. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, an animal model was developed, called cerebral experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (cEAE), which presents with CNS perivascular iron deposits. This model was used to investigate the relationship of iron deposition to inflammation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to generate cEAE, mice were given an encephalitogen injection followed by a stereotactic intracerebral injection of TNF-α and IFN-γ. Control animals received encephalitogen followed by an intracerebral injection of saline, or no encephalitogen plus an intracerebral injection of saline or cytokines. Laser Doppler was used to measure cerebral blood flow. MRI and iron histochemistry were used to localize iron deposits. Additional histological procedures were used to localize inflammatory cell infiltrates, microgliosis and astrogliosis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Doppler analysis revealed that cEAE mice had a reduction in cerebral blood flow compared to controls. MRI revealed T2 hypointense areas in cEAE animals that spatially correlated with iron deposition around vessels and at some sites of inflammation as detected by iron histochemistry. Vessels with associated iron deposits were distributed across both hemispheres. Mice with cEAE had more iron-labeled vessels compared to controls, but these vessels were not commonly associated with inflammatory cell infiltrates. Some iron-laden vessels had associated microgliosis that was above the background microglial response, and iron deposits were observed within reactive microglia. Vessels with associated astrogliosis were more commonly observed without colocalization of iron deposits.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings indicate that iron deposition around vessels can occur independently of inflammation providing evidence against the hypothesis that iron deposits account for inflammatory cell infiltrates observed in MS.</p

    IBD Camp Oasis: A look at participants\u27 social-emotional well-being and protective factors during camp and beyond

    BACKGROUND: Camp Oasis is an annual week-long camp serving children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and hosted by the Crohn\u27s and Colitis Foundation. Youth with IBD are at increased risk for mental health challenges, with Camp Oasis potentially mitigating these risks. The aim of this study is to measure change in and predictors of social-emotional well-being and protective factors of self-worth as a result of attending Camp Oasis. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2019, a voluntary survey was administered to participants and their caregivers to reflect on their perceptions of social/emotional well-being and protective factors related to chronic disease. RESULTS: A total of 6011 online surveys were analyzed. Participants and caregivers reported consistently positive perceptions of participants\u27 experiences during and after camp. Significant improvements in confidence, independence, activity, comfort around others, being more open about disease, and taking medication as expected were observed. Being new to Camp Oasis was one of the strongest predictors of both disease-related self-efficacy and social connections after camp. CONCLUSIONS: The uniformly high rates of participants\u27 perceptions during camp suggest camp is a life-changing experience for youth with IBD, reduces disease-related stigma, and enhances confidence and social skills. Participants\u27 positive experiences appear to foster notable benefits after camp in terms of openness, their sense of belonging, connections, and confidence

    Compositionally restricted attention-based network for materials property predictions

    In this paper, we demonstrate an application of the Transformer self-attention mechanism in the context of materials science. Our network, the Compositionally Restricted Attention-Based network (CrabNet), explores the area of structure-agnostic materials property predictions when only a chemical formula is provided. Our results show that CrabNet’s performance matches or exceeds current best-practice methods on nearly all of 28 total benchmark datasets. We also demonstrate how CrabNet’s architecture lends itself towards model interpretability by showing different visualization approaches that are made possible by its design. We feel confident that CrabNet and its attention-based framework will be of keen interest to future materials informatics researchers

    New record of the Japanese seahorse Hippocampus mohnikei Bleeker, 1853 (Syngnathiformes: Syngnathidae) in Hong Kong waters

It is highly possible that there is an established population of H. mohnikei in Hong Kong due to continuous sightings by citizen scientists in the past nine years. The record is significant from a biogeographical perspective as it connects the distributions of known populations in northern China and Japan to those spanning Thailand to India.
