    The prediction of transonic loading advancing helicopter rotors

    Two different schemes are presented for including the effect of rotor wakes on the finite-difference prediction of rotor loads. The first formulation includes wake effects by means of a blade-surface inflow specification. This approach is sufficiently simple to permit coupling of a full-potential finite-difference rotor code to a comprehensive integral model for the rotor wake and blade motion. The coupling involves a transfer of appropriate loads and inflow data between the two computer codes. Results are compared with experimental data for two advancing rotor cases. The second rotor wake modeling scheme in this paper is a split potential formulation for computing unsteady blade-vortex interactions. Discrete vortex fields are introduced into a three-dimensional, conservative, full-potential rotor code. Computer predictions are compared with two experimental blade-vortex interaction cases

A frequency domain technique for determining the set of all stabilizing controllers for a single feedback loop multivariable system is described.     Quasi-Local Energy Flux of Spacetime Perturbation

    A general expression for quasi-local energy flux for spacetime perturbation is derived from covariant Hamiltonian formulation using functional differentiability and symplectic structure invariance, which is independent of the choice of the canonical variables and the possible boundary terms one initially puts into the Lagrangian in the diffeomorphism invariant theories. The energy flux expression depends on a displacement vector field and the 2-surface under consideration. We apply and test the expression in Vaidya spacetime. At null infinity the expression leads to the Bondi type energy flux obtained by Lindquist, Schwartz and Misner. On dynamical horizons with a particular choice of the displacement vector, it gives the area balance law obtained by Ashtekar and Krishnan.Comment: 8 pages, added appendix, version to appear in Phys.     Radon-Gabor Barcodes for Medical Image Retrieval

    In recent years, with the explosion of digital images on the Web, content-based retrieval has emerged as a significant research area. Shapes, textures, edges and segments may play a key role in describing the content of an image. Radon and Gabor transforms are both powerful techniques that have been widely studied to extract shape-texture-based information. The combined Radon-Gabor features may be more robust against scale/rotation variations, presence of noise, and illumination changes. The objective of this paper is to harness the potentials of both Gabor and Radon transforms in order to introduce expressive binary features, called barcodes, for image annotation/tagging tasks. We propose two different techniques: Gabor-of-Radon-Image Barcodes (GRIBCs), and Guided-Radon-of-Gabor Barcodes (GRGBCs). For validation, we employ the IRMA x-ray dataset with 193 classes, containing 12,677 training images and 1,733 test images. A total error score as low as 322 and 330 were achieved for GRGBCs and GRIBCs, respectively.     The feasibility of using reduced order models and reduced order observers with eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment procedures is investigated. A review of spectral assignment synthesis procedures is presented. Then, a reduced order model which retains essential system characteristics is formulated. A constant state feedback matrix which assigns desired closed loop eigenvalues and approximates specified closed loop eigenvectors is calculated for the reduced order model. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments made in the reduced order system are retained when the feedback matrix is implemented about the full order system. In addition, those modes and associated eigenvectors which are not included in the reduced order model remain unchanged in the closed loop full order system. The fulll state feedback design is then implemented by using a reduced order observer. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments of the closed loop full order system remain unchanged when a reduced order observer is used. The design procedure is illustrated by an actual design problem

    Comments on the 'China model'

    This paper reviews the articles by Pan and by Zhu on the China Model. The review of Pan is critical, that of Zhu sympathetic. Pan is criticised for taking an unquestioning attitude towards state supporting ideologies and failing to adequately account for the effects of changes in family structure and class structure in China over the past 50 years. The reviewer broadly agrees with Zhu's comments about a future steady state economy. The article provides statistical data from the recent economic and demographic histories of China and Japan to back up the general conclusions drawn by Zhu
