    The LCO/Palomar 10,000 km/sec Cluster Survey. I. Properties of the Tully-Fisher Relation

    The first results from a Tully-Fisher (TF) survey of cluster galaxies are presented. The galaxies are drawn from fifteen Abell clusters that lie in the redshift range 9000-12,000 km/sec and are distributed uniformly around the celestial sky. The data set consists of R-band CCD photometry and long- slit H-alpha spectroscopy. The rotation curves (RCs) are characterized by a turnover radius (r_t) and an asymptotic velocity v_a, while the surface brightness profiles are characterized in terms of an effective exponential surface brightness I_e and a scale length r_e. The TF scatter is minimized when the rotation velocity is measured at 2.0 +/- 0.2 r_e; a significantly larger scatter results when the rotation velocity is measured at > 3 or < 1.5 scale lengths. This effect demonstrates that RCs do not have a universal form, as has been suggested by Persic, Salucci, and Stel. In contrast to previous studies, a modest but statistically significant surface-brightness dependence of the TF relation is found, log v = const + 0.28*log L + 0.14*log I_e. This indicates a stronger parallel between the TF relation and the FP relations of elliptical galaxies than has previously been recognized.     Coherent dynamics of photoinduced nucleation processes

    We study the dynamics of initial nucleation processes of photoinduced structural change of molecular crystals. In order to describe the nonadiabatic transition in each molecule, we employ a model of localized electrons coupled with a fully quantized phonon mode, and the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for the model is numerically solved. We found a minimal model to describe the nucleation induced by injection of an excited state of a single molecule in which multiple types of intermolecular interactions are required. In this model coherently driven molecular distortion plays an important role in the successive conversion of electronic states which leads to photoinduced cooperative phenomena.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    The Local Velocity Anomaly

    There is a velocity discontinuity at about 7 Mpc between the galaxies of the Local Sheet that are moving together with low internal velocity dispersion and the adjacent structures. The Local Sheet bounds the Local Void. The Local Sheet is determined to have a peculiar velocity of 260 km/s away from the center of the void.     Gravitational polarization and the phenomenology of MOND

    The modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) has been proposed as an alternative to the dark matter paradigm; the philosophy behind is that there is no dark matter and we witness a violation of the Newtonian law of dynamics. In this article, we interpret differently the phenomenology sustaining MOND, as resulting from an effect of "gravitational polarization", of some cosmic fluid made of dipole moments, aligned in the gravitational field, and representing a new form of dark matter. We invoke an internal force, of non-gravitational origin, in order to hold together the microscopic constituents of the dipole. The dipolar particles are weakly influenced by the distribution of ordinary matter; they are accelerated not by the gravitational field, but by its gradient, or tidal gravitational field.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit

    Leaching losses from Kenyan maize cropland receiving different rates of nitrogen fertilizer

Determining the threshold of reasonable fertilizer application in SSA requires an understanding of flow dynamics and nutrient transport in under-studied, tropical soils experiencing seasonal rainfall. We estimated leaching flux in Yala, Kenya on a maize field that received from 0 to 200 kg ha−1 of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Soil pore water concentration measurements during two growing seasons were coupled with results from a numerical fluid flow model to calculate the daily flux of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N). Modeled NO3−-N losses to below 200 cm for 1 year ranged from 40 kg N ha−1 year−1 in the 75 kg N ha−1 year−1 treatment to 81 kg N ha−1 year−1 in the 200 kg N ha−1 treatment. The highest soil pore water NO3−-N concentrations and NO3−-N leaching fluxes occurred on the highest N application plots, however there was a poor correlation between N application rate and NO3−-N leaching for the remaining N application rates. The drought in the second study year resulted in higher pore water NO3−-N concentrations, while NO3−-N leaching was disproportionately smaller than the decrease in precipitation. The lack of a strong correlation between NO3−-N leaching and N application rate, and a large decrease in flux between 120 and 200 cm suggest processes that influence NO3−-N retention in soils below 200 cm will ultimately control NO3−-N leaching at the watershed scale.Earth Institute, Columbia University; National Science Foundation IIA-0968211; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundatio

    Sedentary behaviours and cognitive function among community dwelling adults aged 50+ years:Results from the Irish longitudinal study of ageing

    Background: Sedentary behaviours (SB) are risk factors for poor cardiovascular health and all-cause mortality. However, their role in cognitive health in older adults is unclear. A few studies have examined associations between sedentary behaviours and cognition, but are limited by heterogeneity and insufficient longitudinal analyses. Therefore more robust studies, which would address identified limitations, are needed to accurately determine associations. Method: This study analysed data collected from participants aged 50+ years of The Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA). We conducted cross-sectional linear regression with multivariate imputation analyses of baseline data from wave 1 (N = 8163, weekday-sitting time), and wave 3 (N = 6400, weekday-television viewing); longitudinal analyses between waves 1\u20133 (sitting) and waves 3\u20134 (television). Sedentary behaviours were analysed as both categorical and continuous variables. Outcome of cross-sectional analyses was standardised regression co-efficient of associations between sedentary exposures and cognitive function in respective waves, while for longitudinal analyses was cognitive change (verbal memory, verbal fluency, and global cognition) between waves based on standardised residuals. Result: Study found significant but mild cross-sectional associations between 1-h increase in weekday-television viewing and poorer verbal memory (b = 120.02, CI: 120.04, 120.003, P &lt; 0.05) and verbal fluency (b = 120.02, CI: 120.04, 120.002, P &lt; 0.05). Baseline television viewing of 3.5+ h/day had mild but significant association with a decline in verbal fluency 2 years later in participants aged 65+ years, when compared with a reference category of &lt;1.5 h of TV viewing (b = 120.12, CI: 120.23, 120.001, P &lt; 0.05). Conclusion: Our study findings indicated some association between increased levels of weekday-television viewing time, independent of physical activity, and poor cognition cross-sectionally and longitudinally in middle-aged and older adults. Intervention studies are needed to confirm the effects of SB on cognition in older adults. Public health campaigns should be targeted at displacing high levels of television viewing, in excess of 3.5 h/day among older adults. \ua9 2020 Elsevier Lt

    Galaxy Halo Masses from Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing

    We present measurements of the extended dark halo profiles of bright early type galaxies at redshifts 0.1 to 0.9 obtained via galaxy-galaxy lensing analysis of images taken at the CFHT using the UH8K CCD mosaic camera. Six half degree fields were observed for a total of 2 hours each in I and V, resulting in catalogs containing ~20 000 galaxies per field. We used V-I color and I magnitude to select bright early type galaxies as the lens galaxies, yielding a sample of massive lenses with fairly well determined redshifts and absolute magnitudes M ~ M_* \pm 1. We paired these with faint galaxies lying at angular distances 20" to 60", corresponding to physical radii of 26 to 77 kpc (z = 0.1) and 105 to 315 kpc (z = 0.9), and computed the mean tangential shear of the faint galaxies. The shear falls off with radius roughly as expected for flat rotation curve halos. The shear values were weighted in proportion to the square root of the luminosity of the lens galaxy. Our results give a value for the average mean rotation velocity of an L_* galaxy halo at r~50-200 kpc of v_* = 238^{+27}_{-30} km per sec for a flat lambda (Omega_m0 = 0.3, Omega_l0 = 0.7) cosmology (v_* = 269^{+34}_{-39} km per sec for Einstein-de Sitter), and with little evidence for evolution with redshift. We compare to halo masses measured by other groups/techniques. We find a mass-to-light ratio of ~121\pm28h(r/100 kpc) and these halos constitute Omega ~0.04 \pm 0.01(r/100 kpc) of closure density.
