Characterization of Polymeric Proteins from Vitreous and Floury Sorghum Endosperm
Differences in protein content and composition between vitreous and floury endosperm were investigated using a number of different techniques. Differences in protein cross-linking between vitreous and floury endosperm were investigated using differential solubility, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and analysis of sulfhydryl content and composition. Vitreous endosperm was found to have higher levels of total protein and kafirins, but floury endosperm had a higher proportion of γ-kafirins than the vitreous. Floury endosperm was found to have higher levels of SDS-soluble proteins than SDS-insoluble proteins extracted using sonication than vitreous endosperm. Conversely, vitreous endosperm had a greater proportion of the insoluble proteins. SEC analysis of the polymeric proteins revealed that the insoluble proteins had more polymeric proteins than did the soluble proteins, indicating greater cross-linking and a larger Mw distribution. Vitreous endosperm was also found to have a greater percentage (i.e., a higher ratio of disulfide to total sulfhydryls) of disulfide bonds than floury endosperm. These results show that the proteins in vitreous endosperm have a higher degree of cross-linking and a greater Mw distribution than those found in floury endosperm
High On/Off Ratios in Bilayer Graphene Field Effect Transistors Realized by Surface Dopants
The unique property of bilayer graphene to show a band gap tunable by
external electrical fields enables a variety of different device concepts with
novel functionalities for electronic, optoelectronic and sensor applications.
So far the operation of bilayer graphene based field effect transistors
requires two individual gates to vary the channel's conductance and to create a
band gap. In this paper we report on a method to increase the on/off ratio in
single gated bilayer graphene field effect transistors by adsorbate doping. The
adsorbate dopants on the upper side of the graphene establish a displacement
field perpendicular to the graphene surface breaking the inversion symmetry of
the two graphene layers. Low temperature measurements indicate, that the
increased on/off ratio is caused by the opening of a mobility gap. Beside field
effect transistors the presented approach can also be employed for other
bilayer graphene based devices like photodetectors for THz to infrared
radiation, chemical sensors and in more sophisticated structures such as
antidot- or superlattices where an artificial potential landscape has to be

Thickness Estimation of Epitaxial Graphene on SiC using Attenuation of Substrate Raman Intensity
A simple, non-invasive method using Raman spectroscopy for the estimation of
the thickness of graphene layers grown epitaxially on silicon carbide (SiC) is
presented, enabling simultaneous determination of thickness, grain size and
disorder using the spectra. The attenuation of the substrate Raman signal due
to the graphene overlayer is found to be dependent on the graphene film
thickness deduced from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission
electron microscopy of the surfaces. We explain this dependence using an
absorbing overlayer model. This method can be used for mapping graphene
thickness over a region and is capable of estimating thickness of multilayer
graphene films beyond that possible by XPS and Auger electron spectroscopy

Influence of parental employment status on Dutch and Slovak adolescents' health
BACKGROUND: Recent research shows the possibility that the link between parental employment status and children's health can be affected by different cultural or societal settings. The aim of this study was to explore whether the effect of father's and mother's employment status on several aspects of adolescents' health differs between Slovakia and the Netherlands. METHODS: Two data sets were used: 2616 Slovak adolescents (mean age 14.9) and 2054 Dutch adolescents (mean age 16.3). Self-rated health, GHQ-12, long-term well-being and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were used to assess the health of adolescents. Parental employment status was classified into the following categories: employed, unemployed, disabled, housewife (among mothers only). Logistic regression analyses were done separately for males and females. RESULTS: Results indicate that having an unemployed father negatively influences self-rated health and long-term well-being of Slovak male adolescents, but has no effect on the health of Dutch adolescents. Secondly, having a disabled father has a negative effect on the psychological well-being of Dutch males and the self-rated health of females, but does not influence the health of Slovak adolescents. Thirdly, having a mother who is disabled, unemployed or a housewife has a negative effect on the self-esteem of Slovak adolescents. Fourthly, Dutch males whose mother was a housewife had worse long-term well-being than those with an unemployed mother, whereas Dutch females whose mother was a housewife reported better psychological well-being than those with an employed mother. CONCLUSION: To conclude briefly our results, father's unemployment seems to be a better predictor of health for Slovak adolescents, father's disablement of health for Dutch ones. Mother's employment status seemed to be important for the self-esteem of Slovak adolescents and mother as a housewife for the health of Dutch ones. This suggests that the link between parental employment status and the health of their children may vary between countries, and therefore further studies involving various cultures are needed
Basal-plane Incommensurate Phases in HCP Structures
An Ising model with competing interaction is used to study the appearance of
incommensurate phases in the basal plane of an hexagonal closed-packed
structure. The calculated mean-field phase diagram reveals various
1q-incommensurate and lock-in phases. The results are applied to explain the
basal-plane incommensurate phase in some compounds of the A'A"BX_4 family, like
K_2MoO_4, K_2WO_4, Rb_2WO4 and to describe the sequence of high-temperature

Oxidation resistance of graphene-coated Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
The ability to protect refined metals from reactive environments is vital to
many industrial and academic applications. Current solutions, however,
typically introduce several negative effects, including increased thickness and
changes in the metal physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the
first time the ability of graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition to
protect the surface of the metallic growth substrates of Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
from air oxidation. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies show that the
metal surface is well protected from oxidation even after heating at 200
\degree C in air for up to 4 hours. Our work further shows that graphene
provides effective resistance against hydrogen peroxide. This protection method
offers significant advantages and can be used on any metal that catalyzes
graphene growth
The relationship between parental socio-economic status and episodes of drunkenness among adolescents: findings from a cross-national survey
BACKGROUND: Behavioral factors such as (excessive) alcohol consumption play a major role in the explanation of social inequalities in health. The unequal distribution of health risk behaviors among socio-economic groups has important consequences for both the current and future health status of the younger generation. However, little is known about socio-economic differences in unhealthy lifestyles during adolescence. The purpose of the present study is to investigate socio-economic differences in adolescent drinking behaviour among 11–15 year old adolescents in Europe and North America. METHODS: Data was obtained from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study 2001/02, a cross-national survey conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The present analysis is based on 69249 male and 73619 female students from 28 countries. The effect of parental occupation and family affluence on episodes of drunkenness was assessed using separate logistic regression models controlling for age. RESULTS: Socio-economic circumstances of the family had only a limited effect on repeated drunkenness in adolescence. For girls only in one out of 28 countries a significant association between family affluence and repeated drunkenness was observed, while boys from low and/or medium affluent families in nine countries faced a lower risk of drunkenness than boys from more affluent families. Regarding parental occupation, significant differences in episodes of drunkenness were found in nine countries for boys and in six countries for girls. Compared to family affluence, which was positively related to risk of drunkenness, a decreasing occupational status predicted an increasing risk of drunkenness. This pattern was identified within a number of countries, most noticeably for boys. CONCLUSION: Parental socio-economic status is only of limited importance for episodes of drunkenness in early adolescence, and this very limited role seems to apply for girls more than for boys and for parental occupation more than family affluence. For future studies it might be important to look at the effects of socio-economic status within the context of other peer, family and school related factors in order to assess to what extent those factors might mediate the effects of social class background
Technique for the Dry Transfer of Epitaxial Graphene onto Arbitrary Substrates
In order to make graphene technologically viable, the transfer of graphene
films to substrates appropriate for specific applications is required. We
demonstrate the dry transfer of epitaxial graphene (EG) from the C-face of
4H-SiC onto SiO2, GaN and Al2O3 substrates using a thermal release tape. We
further report on the impact of this process on the electrical properties of
the EG films. This process enables EG films to be used in flexible electronic
