On the Ground Validation of Online Diagnosis with Twitter and Medical Records

Social media has been considered as a data source for tracking disease. However, most analyses are based on models that prioritize strong correlation with population-level disease rates over determining whether or not specific individual users are actually sick. Taking a different approach, we develop a novel system for social-media based disease detection at the individual level using a sample of professionally diagnosed individuals. Specifically, we develop a system for making an accurate influenza diagnosis based on an individual's publicly available Twitter data. We find that about half (17/35 = 48.57%) of the users in our sample that were sick explicitly discuss their disease on Twitter. By developing a meta classifier that combines text analysis, anomaly detection, and social network analysis, we are able to diagnose an individual with greater than 99% accuracy even if she does not discuss her health.Comment: Presented at of WWW2014. Theorising Monitoring: Algebraic Models of Web Monitoring in Organisations

Our lives are facilitated and mediated by software. Thanks to software, data on nearly everything can be generated, accessed and analysed for all sorts of reasons. Software technologies, combined with political and commercial ideas and practices, have led to a wide range of our activities being monitored, which is the source of concerns about surveillance and privacy. We pose the questions: What is monitoring? Do diverse and disparate monitoring systems have anything in common? What role does monitoring play in contested issues of surveillance and privacy? We are developing an abstract theory for studying monitoring that begins by capturing structures common to many different monitoring practices. The theory formalises the idea that monitoring is a process that observes the behaviour of people and objects in a context. Such entities and their behaviours can be represented by abstract data types and their observable attributes by logics. In this paper, we give a formal model of monitoring based on the idea that behaviour is modelled by streams of data, and apply the model to a social context: the monitoring of web usage by staff and members of an organisation

    Prosthetic Foot Shell, QL+

This final design review includes an overview of our project and the steps we have taken to create our final product. We discuss the background research conducted, including various products like the foot shell we are trying to design and its related patents, along with similar past senior projects. As our product is considered a medical device, there are also certain standards that we must comply with. After determining our problem statement, we established what we believe to be the wants and needs of our user. These wants and needs were converted into specifications for our design, with durability as a main goal. These specifications were used to brainstorm initial design ideas through concept modeling. There are various images and diagrams of these models that we use to support our reasonings. A preliminary design solution was chosen after an analysis was performed on our concept models. We conclude the report with an overview of the steps we took to complete our project and design and manufacture a durable prosthetic foot shell as well as future plans for testing and manufacturing a full-size foot shell prototype. A summary of our conclusions and recommendations for next steps wrap up the project

Tesi

Logistical and Analytical Approach to a Failure Aboard the International Space Station

The starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) from the International Space Station (ISS) began exhibiting off-nominal electrical demands and vibration. Examination by spacewalking astronauts revealed metallic debris contaminating the system and damage to the outboard race of the SARJ. Samples of the contamination were returned to Earth and analyzed. Excessive friction caused the nitride region of the 15-5 PH stainless steel race to spall, generating the debris and damaging the race surface. Excessive vibration and excess power was required to operate the system as a result

Narrowing the Digital Divide: The Young Women Leaders Program HerStory Project

Research suggests that girls are at especial disadvantage in the field of informational technology and are less likely than boys to take courses or seek out careers in this area. The Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP), a mentoring program at the University of Virginia that pairs at-risk middle school girls with college women for a year of mentoring, developed the YWLP HerStory project to engage middle school girls in informational technology through their development of technology projects focused on psychosocial issues of importance to them. This study reviewed an early version of the YWLP HerStory’s technology curriculum and training for mentors, the revisions made to both, and evaluated the effectiveness of the revisions with a sample of 27 eighth grade girls and their mentors. Findings indicated that participating in the revised curriculum improved girls’ engagement in technology projects, including an 83% completion rate, and modifications to mentor training improved mentor’s grasp of relevant technology and confidence in teaching it to their mentees. Notably, participating eighth grade girls reported that the technology curriculum was fun and expressed an interest in further engagement in using technology platforms to tell their stories
