An architecture for integrating distributed and cooperating knowledge-based Air Force decision aids

    Get PDF
MITRE has been developing a Knowledge-Based Battle Management Testbed for evaluating the viability of integrating independently-developed knowledge-based decision aids in the Air Force tactical domain. The primary goal for the testbed architecture is to permit a new system to be added to a testbed with little change to the system's software. Each system that connects to the testbed network declares that it can provide a number of services to other systems. When a system wants to use another system's service, it does not address the server system by name, but instead transmits a request to the testbed network asking for a particular service to be performed. A key component of the testbed architecture is a common database which uses a relational database management system (RDBMS). The RDBMS provides a database update notification service to requesting systems. Normally, each system is expected to monitor data relations of interest to it. Alternatively, a system may broadcast an announcement message to inform other systems that an event of potential interest has occurred. Current research is aimed at dealing with issues resulting from integration efforts, such as dealing with potential mismatches of each system's assumptions about the common database, decentralizing network control, and coordinating multiple agents

Correlates of Poverty and Participation in Food Assistance Programs among Hispanic Elders in Massachusetts

Hispanics are a rapidly growing population in Massachusetts, but little is known about the health, nutrition, and economic situation of the elder segment of these groups. In this report, we examine factors associated with poverty and the use of food assistance programs, using data from an NIA-funded project on Hispanic elders in Massachusetts. Poverty is shown to be a major problem with differences across Hispanic subgroups. Puerto Rican and Dominican elders have lower incomes, on average, than other Hispanics—mainly Cubans, and Central and South Americans—or than non-Hispanic whites living in the same neighborhoods. Older age, lower education, and living alone are associated with poverty within this population. Limited income sources and recent immigration are also important factors. Hispanic elders are more likely to receive SSI benefits, but are much less likely to have pension income. Financial insecurity in old age among Hispanics is associated with more chronic ailment and mobility limitations. Puerto Rican and Dominican elders have the highest poverty and disability rates and report the most food insecurity. However, with the exception of the Food Stamp program, participation in food programs tends to be very low for these Hispanic elders. Given the prevalence of problems demonstrated by these groups, more attention to program outreach and adaptation for Hispanic elders is needed.

Study of West Virginia wood industry roundwood consumption in 1999

    Get PDF
Use of wood composite products has increased over the last decade in the market for construction material. Softwood species and soft hardwood species are the preferred forest resources for manufacturing these products. Reduction in available softwood forest resources from the Western states has forced a shift to use of more soft hardwood species in the Northeast. What impact this shift may have on the forest resources in the Northeast is not known.;The objective of this study was to canvass primary wood manufacturers in and around the forest of West Virginia and determine how roundwood consumption has changed since the shift occurred. Survey data is used to analyze the effect of new wood composite mills in West Virginia. Survey results show that sawlog products (61 million cubic feet) and wood composite products (43 million cubic feet) were the two leading products consuming roundwood in 1999

Graphs of Small Rank-width are Pivot-minors of Graphs of Small Tree-width

We prove that every graph of rank-width kk is a pivot-minor of a graph of tree-width at most 2k2k. We also prove that graphs of rank-width at most 1, equivalently distance-hereditary graphs, are exactly vertex-minors of trees, and graphs of linear rank-width at most 1 are precisely vertex-minors of paths. In addition, we show that bipartite graphs of rank-width at most 1 are exactly pivot-minors of trees and bipartite graphs of linear rank-width at most 1 are precisely pivot-minors of paths.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Observational evidence for stochastic biasing

    Get PDF
We show that the galaxy density in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) cannot be perfectly correlated with the underlying mass distribution since various galaxy subpopulations are not perfectly correlated with each other, even taking shot noise into account. This rules out the hypothesis of simple linear biasing, and suggests that the recently proposed stochastic biasing framework is necessary for modeling actual data.Comment: 4 pages, with 2 figures included. First Order Phase Transition in the 3-dimensional Blume-Capel Model on a Cellular Automaton

The first order phase transition of the three-dimensional Blume Capel are investigated using cooling algorithm which improved from Creutz Cellular Automaton for the D/J=2.9D/J=2.9 parameter value in the first order phase transition region. The analysis of the data using the finite-size effect and the histogram technique indicate that the magnetic susceptibility maxima and the specific heat maxima increase with the system volume (LdL^{d}) at % D/J=2.9.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
