Interval type-2 fuzzy automata and Interval type-2 fuzzy grammar

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present work is to introduce and study the concept of interval type-2 (IT2) fuzzy grammar which recognizes the given IT2 fuzzy languages. The relationship between IT2 fuzzy automata and IT2 fuzzy (weak) regular grammars is discussed. Specifically, the results we obtained here are (i ) IT2 fuzzy weak regular grammar and IT2 fuzzy regular grammar generate the same classes of IT2 fuzzy languages (ii ) for a given IT2 fuzzy regular grammars, there exists an IT2 fuzzy automata such that they accept the same IT2 fuzzy languages, and vice versa. In addition, we define some operations on IT2 fuzzy languages and it is shown that IT2 fuzzy languages recognized by IT2 fuzzy automata are closed under the operations of union, intersection, concatenation and Kleene closure, but are not closed under complement

Life without theory: biography as an exemplar of philosophical understanding

    No full text
This article discusses recent attempts to provide the genre of biography with a philosophical, theoretical foundation and attempts to show that such efforts are fundamentally misguided. Biography is, I argue, a profoundly nontheoretical activity, and this, precisely, makes it philosophically interesting. Instead of looking to philosophy to provide a theory of biography, we should, I maintain, look to biography to provide a crucially important example and model of what Ludwig Wittgenstein called "the kind of understanding that consists in seeing connections." This kind of understanding stands in sharp contrast to the theoretical understanding provided by science and is, Wittgenstein maintained, what we as philosophers are, or should be, striving for

The Bologna Process and the reform of medical education

    Get PDF
In 1988, the Magna Charta Universitatum was signed at a meeting of European University rectors on the occasion of the 900th Anniversary of the University of Bologna to mark their commitment to harmonising the European Higher Education sector. Subsequently in 1999, Ministers of Education from 29 countries were co-signatories to the Bologna declaration. Since that time, the Bologna process has developed from a declaration of commitment to improving education to a process dedicated to standardising education, ensuring quality whilst maintaining the appropriate level of flexibility.peer-reviewe

[Review of] Lydio F. Tomasi, ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives in Italian Immigration and Ethnicity

    Get PDF
There are those who have heralded the 1980s as The Decade of the Italian American as many of the 20 million Americans of Italian descent achieve increasing prominence in politics, business, education and the arts. This new role assumed by Americans of immigrant stock has necessitated revised patterns of investigation addressing the impact of socio-economic mobility, the effects of transmigration and the growing phenomenon of exogenous marriage. For example, of the Italian American women born since 1950, between two-thirds and three-quarters have married outside the ethnic group. Finally, the size and multigenerational sampling provided by the Italian American population invites careful study of rural versus urban assimilation patterns, analysis of the relationship of sojourner settlement patterns to politico-economic conditions in the homeland, and an investigation of the myriad variations of acculturation affected by class, age and extent of social support network
