SZ and CMB reconstruction using Generalized Morphological Component Analysis
In the last decade, the study of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data has
become one of the most powerful tools to study and understand the Universe.
More precisely, measuring the CMB power spectrum leads to the estimation of
most cosmological parameters. Nevertheless, accessing such precious physical
information requires extracting several different astrophysical components from
the data. Recovering those astrophysical sources (CMB, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich
clusters, galactic dust) thus amounts to a component separation problem which
has already led to an intense activity in the field of CMB studies. In this
paper, we introduce a new sparsity-based component separation method coined
Generalized Morphological Component Analysis (GMCA). The GMCA approach is
formulated in a Bayesian maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework. Numerical
results show that this new source recovery technique performs well compared to
state-of-the-art component separation methods already applied to CMB data.Comment: 11 pages - Statistical Methodology - Special Issue on Astrostatistics

Iterative Approximate Consensus in the presence of Byzantine Link Failures
This paper explores the problem of reaching approximate consensus in
synchronous point-to-point networks, where each directed link of the underlying
communication graph represents a communication channel between a pair of nodes.
We adopt the transient Byzantine link failure model [15, 16], where an
omniscient adversary controls a subset of the directed communication links, but
the nodes are assumed to be fault-free.
Recent work has addressed the problem of reaching approximate consen- sus in
incomplete graphs with Byzantine nodes using a restricted class of iterative
algorithms that maintain only a small amount of memory across iterations [22,
21, 23, 12]. However, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to
consider approximate consensus in the presence of Byzan- tine links. We extend
our past work that provided exact characterization of graphs in which the
iterative approximate consensus problem in the presence of Byzantine node
failures is solvable [22, 21]. In particular, we prove a tight necessary and
sufficient condition on the underlying com- munication graph for the existence
of iterative approximate consensus algorithms under transient Byzantine link
model. The condition answers (part of) the open problem stated in [16].Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1202.609
Exclusive Hadronic D Decays to eta' and eta
Hadronic decay modes and
are studied in the generalized
factorization approach. Form factors for transitions
are carefully evaluated by taking into account the wave function normalization
of the eta and eta'. The predicted branching ratios are generally in agreement
with experiment except for and
; the calculated decay rates for the first two decay modes
are too small by an order of magnitude. We show that the weak decays and followed by resonance-induced final-state
interactions (FSI), which are amenable technically, are able to enhance the
branching ratios of and dramatically
without affecting the agreement between theory and experiment for and . We argue that it is difficult to understand
the observed large decay rates of and
simultaneously; FSI, W-annihilation and the production of excess eta' from
gluons are not helpful in this regard. The large discrepancy between the
factorization hypothesis and experiment for the ratio of
and remains as an enigma.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev. D. Form factors for D to

Adapting SAM for CDF
The CDF and D0 experiments probe the high-energy frontier and as they do so
have accumulated hundreds of Terabytes of data on the way to petabytes of data
over the next two years. The experiments have made a commitment to use the
developing Grid based on the SAM system to handle these data. The D0 SAM has
been extended for use in CDF as common patterns of design emerged to meet the
similar requirements of these experiments. The process by which the merger was
achieved is explained with particular emphasis on lessons learned concerning
the database design patterns plus realization of the use cases.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Group descent algorithms for nonconvex penalized linear and logistic regression models with grouped predictors
Penalized regression is an attractive framework for variable selection
problems. Often, variables possess a grouping structure, and the relevant
selection problem is that of selecting groups, not individual variables. The
group lasso has been proposed as a way of extending the ideas of the lasso to
the problem of group selection. Nonconvex penalties such as SCAD and MCP have
been proposed and shown to have several advantages over the lasso; these
penalties may also be extended to the group selection problem, giving rise to
group SCAD and group MCP methods. Here, we describe algorithms for fitting
these models stably and efficiently. In addition, we present simulation results
and real data examples comparing and contrasting the statistical properties of
these methods
NMR Simulation of an Eight-State Quantum System
The propagation of excitation along a one-dimensional chain of atoms is
simulated by means of NMR. The physical system used as an analog quantum
computer is a nucleus of 133-Cs (spin 7/2) in a liquid crystalline matrix. The
Hamiltonian of migration is simulated by using a special 7-frequency pulse, and
the dynamics is monitored by following the transfer of population from one of
the 8 spin energy levels to the other.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
An MPEG-7 scheme for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video
Abstract Part 5 of the MPEG-7 standard specifies Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS); that is, the format multimedia content models should conform to in order to ensure interoperability across multiple platforms and applications. However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. We present details of the scheme, front-end systems used for content modelling and filtering and experiences with a number of users
Complete genome sequence of lignin-degrading streptomyces sp. S6 isolated from oil palm plantation in Malaysia
Streptomyces spp. are bacteria that are responsible for the degradation of aromatic compounds and produce secondary metabolites. Here, we present a complete genome sequence of Streptomyces sp. strain S6, which was isolated from an oil palm plantation, with a 7.8-Mbp liner chromosome, a GC content of 72%, and 4,266 coding sequences
Cabibbo-allowed nonleptonic weak decays of charmed baryons
Cabibbo-allowed nonleptonic weak decays of charmed baryons
\lamc,~\xin,~\xip and into an octet baryon and a pseudoscalar
meson are analyzed. The nonfactorizable contributions are evaluated under pole
approximation, and it turns out that the -wave amplitudes are dominated by
the low-lying \halfm resonances, while -wave ones governed by the
ground-state \halfp poles. The MIT bag model is employed to calculate the
coupling constants, form factors and baryon matrix elements. Our conclusions
are: (i) waves are no longer dominated by commutator terms; the
current-algebra method is certainly not applicable to parity-violating
amplitudes, (ii) nonfactorizable exchange effects are generally important;
they can be comparable to and somtimes even dominate over factorizable
contributions, depending on the decay modes under consideration, (iii)
large- approximation for factorizable amplitudes also works in the heavy
baryon sector and it accounts for the color nonsuppression of \lamc\ri
p\bar{K}^0 relative to \lamc\ri\Lambda\pi^+, (iv) a measurement of the decay
rate and the sign of the asymmetry parameter of certain proposed decay
modes will help discern various models; especially the sign of in
\lamc\ri\Sigma\pi decays can be used to unambiguously differentiate recent
theoretical schemes from current algebra, and (v) waves are the dominant
contributions to the decays \lamc\ri\Xi^0 K^+ and \xin\ri\Sigma^+ K^-, but
they are subject to a large cancellation; this renders present theoretical
predictions on these two channels unreliable.Comment: PHYZZX, 31 pages, 3 tables, IP-ASTP-10-93, ITP-SB-93-2
