Decoherence of flux qubits due to 1/f flux noise
We have investigated decoherence in Josephson-junction flux qubits. Based on
the measurements of decoherence at various bias conditions, we discriminate
contributions of different noise sources. In particular, we present a Gaussian
decay function of the echo signal as evidence of dephasing due to flux
noise whose spectral density is evaluated to be about /Hz
at 1 Hz. We also demonstrate that at an optimal bias condition where the noise
sources are well decoupled the coherence observed in the echo measurement is
mainly limited by energy relaxation of the qubit.Comment: 4 pages, error in Fig.4 corrected, to appear in PR
Duodenal ulcer is a multifactorial disorder the role of pepsinogen I
Serum pepsinogen I (PGI) levels were measured in 231 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients and 100 sex and age-comparable healthy controls. Significantly higher mean serum PGI levels were found in DU patients than in controls (124,7 ± 3,4 ng/ml v. 92,9 ± 2,3 ng/ml; P < 0,001) (mean ± SE). These levels were higher in male DU patients than in female DU patients (128,5 ± 3,9 ng/IDl v. 107,4 ± 6,4 ng/ml; P < 0,05). Smoking was associated with elevated serum PGI levels in DU patients (145,3 ± 5,1 ng/ml v. 109,0 ± 4,2 ngl/ml; P < 0,001). Healed DUs were associated with lower mean serum PGI levels than active ulcers (110,9 ± 7,6 ng/ml v. 129,4 ± 3,8 ng/ml, P < 0,05). Whether patients were positive or negative for Helicobacter pylori, infection did not affect mean serum PGI levels. All the risk factors for DU may not affect serum PGI levels and DU may therefore be considered a multifactorial disease
Local density of states and scanning tunneling currents in graphene
We present exact analytical calculations of scanning tunneling currents in
locally disordered graphene using a multimode description of the microscope
tip. Analytical expressions for the local density of states (LDOS) are given
for energies beyond the Dirac cone approximation. We show that the LDOS at the
and sublattices of graphene are out of phase by implying that the
averaged LDOS, as one moves away from the impurity, shows no trace of the
(with the Fermi momentum) Friedel modulation. This means that a
STM experiment lacking atomic resolution at the sublattice level will not be
able of detecting the presence of the Friedel oscillations [this seems to be
the case in the experiments reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 206802
(2008)]. The momentum maps of the LDOS for different types of impurities are
given. In the case of the vacancy, features are seen in these maps. In
all momentum space maps, and features are seen. The
features are different from what is seen around zero momentum. An
interpretation for these features is given. The calculations reported here are
valid for chemical substitution impurities, such as boron and nitrogen atoms,
as well as for vacancies. It is shown that the density of states close to the
impurity is very sensitive to type of disorder: diagonal, non-diagonal, or
vacancies. In the case of weakly coupled (to the carbon atoms) impurities, the
local density of states presents strong resonances at finite energies, which
leads to steps in the scanning tunneling currents and to suppression of the

Weak dipole moment of in collisions with longitudinally polarized electrons
It is pointed out that certain CP-odd momentum correlations in the production
and subsequent decay of tau pairs in collisions get enhanced when the
is longitudinally polarized. Analytic expressions for these correlations
are obtained for the single-pion decay mode of when have
a ``weak" dipole form factor (WDFF) coupling to . For collisions
at the peak, a sensitivity of about 1-5\mbox{ cm} for
the WDFF can be reached using a {\em single} decay
channel, with 's likely to be available at the SLC at Stanford with

The Study for Recycling NORM - Contaminated Steel Scraps from Steel Industry
Since 1994, most of the major steel industries in Taiwan have installed portal monitor to detect the abnormal radiation in metal scrap feed. As a result, the discovery of NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) has increased in recent years. In order to save the natural resources and promote radiation protection, an experimental melting process for the NORM contaminated steel scraps was carried out by the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) Taiwan, ROC. The experimental melting process has a pretreatment step that includes a series of cutting and removal of scales, sludge, as well as combustible and volatile materials on/in the steel scraps. After pretreatment the surface of the steel scraps are relatively clean. Then the scraps are melted by a pilot-type induction furnace. This experiment finally produced seven ingots with a total weight of 2,849 kg and 96.8% recovery. All of the surface dose rates are of the background values. The activity concentrations of these ingots are also below the regulatory criteria. Thus, these NORM-bearing steel scraps are ready for recycling. Structural transition in epitaxial Co/Cr multilayers as studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy
[[abstract]]We have performed Cr and Co K-edge x-ray-absorption measurements to investigate the dependence of local electronic and atomic structures on the Cr-layer thickness in epitaxial Co (40A)/Ct (t~) (t~ = 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9A) multilayers. The Cr K x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of Co/Cr multilayers indicate an abrupt transition of the Cr layer from a bcc structure to a hcp structure when the thickness of the Cr layer is decreased down to -5A or three atomic layers. The structural transition and bond-length distortion in Cr and Co layers observed in the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements are consistent with the XANES results.[[notice]]補正完畢[[journaltype]]國外[[booktype]]紙本[[booktype]]電子版[[countrycodes]]US
Dynamics of Particles Deposition on a Disordered Substrate: II. Far-from Equilibrium Behavior. -
The deposition dynamics of particles (or the growth of a rigid crystal) on a
disordered substrate at a finite deposition rate is explored. We begin with an
equation of motion which includes, in addition to the disorder, the periodic
potential due to the discrete size of the particles (or to the lattice
structure of the crystal) as well as the term introduced by Kardar, Parisi, and
Zhang (KPZ) to account for the lateral growth at a finite growth rate. A
generating functional for the correlation and response functions of this
process is derived using the approach of Martin, Sigga, and Rose. A consistent
renormalized perturbation expansion to first order in the non-Gaussian
couplings requires the calculation of diagrams up to three loops. To this order
we show, for the first time for this class of models which violates the the
fluctuation-dissipation theorem, that the theory is renormalizable. We find
that the effects of the periodic potential and the disorder decay on very large
scales and asymptotically the KPZ term dominates the behavior. However, strong
