    Tau Kinematics from Impact Parameters

The momenta of τ\tau decay products in the reaction e+eτ+τe^+e^-\to\tau^+\tau^- do not constrain the τ\tau direction unambiguously. It is shown how the measurement of tracks of hadrons from semileptonic τ\tau decays, in particular their relative impact parameters, allows to resolve this ambiguity.Comment: 4[pag]es, 1 figure available by FAX, TTP93-1

Semileptonic tau decays, structure functions, kinematics and polarisation

    Get PDF
The most general angular distribution of two or three meson final states from semileptonic decays τππν\tau\rightarrow \pi\pi\nu, KπνK\pi\nu, πππν\pi\pi\pi\nu, KππνK\pi\pi\nu, KπνK\pi\nu, KKKνKKK\nu, ηππν,\eta\pi\pi\nu,\,\ldots{} of polarized τ\tau leptons can be characterized by 16 structure functions. Predictions for hadronic matrix elements, based on CVC and chiral Lagrangians and their relations to the structure functions are discussed. Most of them can be determined in currently ongoing high statistics experiments. Emphasis of the kinematical analysis is firstly put on τ\tau decays in e+ee^{+}e^{-} experiments where the neutrino escapes detection and the τ\tau rest frame cannot be reconstructed. Subsequently it is shown, how the determination of hadron tracks in double semileptonic events allows to fully reconstruct the τ\tau kinematics. The implications for the spin analysis are indicated.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX (uses epsf.sty, 3 ps-figures appended as extra uuencoded file) The complete paper, including figures, is also available via anonymous ftp at ftp://ttpux2.physik.uni-karlsruhe.de/ttp94-27/ttp94-27.ps, or via www at http://ttpux2.physik.uni-karlsruhe.de/preprints.htm

It is demonstrated that the analyzing power of multi-meson final states in semileptonic τ\tau decays with respect to the τ\tau spin is equal and maximal for all decay modes.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex. Direct CP, T and/or CPT violations in the K^0-\bar{K^0} system - Implications of the recent KTeV results on 2π2\pi decays -

The recent results on the CP violating parameters Re(e'/e) and \Delta\phi = \phi_{00}-\phi_{+-} reported by the KTeV Collaboration are analyzed with a view to constrain CP, T and CPT violations in a decay process. Combining with some relevant data compiled by the Particle Data Group, we find Re(e_2-e_0) = (0.85 +- 3.11)*10^{-4} and Im(e_2-e_0) = (3.2 +- 0.7)*10^{-4}, where Re(e_I) and Im(e_I) represent respectively CP/CPT and CP/T violations in decay of K^0 and \bar{K^0} into a 2\pi state with isospin I.Comment: 7 pages, No figure

New Fermions at e+^+e^- Colliders: I. Production and Decay

We analyze the production in e+ee^+e^- collisions of new heavy fermions stemming from extensions of the Standard Model. We write down the most general expression for the production of two heavy fermions and their subsequent decays, allowing for the polarization of the e+^+e^- initial state and taking into account the final polarization of the fermions. We then discuss the various decay modes including cascade and three body decays, and the production mechanisms, both pair production and single production in association with ordinary fermions.Comment: 21 pages (no figures), Preprint UdeM-LPN-TH-93-15

Shot-noise spectroscopy of energy-resolved ballistic currents

    Get PDF
We investigate the shot noise of nonequilibrium carriers injected into a ballistic conductor and interacting via long-range Coulomb forces. Coulomb interactions are shown to act as an energy analyzer of the profile of injected electrons by means of the fluctuations of the potential barrier at the emitter contact. We show that the details in the energy profile can be extracted from shot-noise measurements in the Coulomb interaction regime, but cannot be obtained from time-averaged quantities or shot-noise measurements in the absence of interactions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

CP Violation in Semileptonic τ\tau Decays with Unpolarized Beams

CP violating signals in semileptonic τ\tau decays are studied. These can be observed in decays of unpolarized single τ\tau's even if their rest frame cannot be reconstructed. No beam polarization is required. The importance of the two meson channel, in particular the KπK\pi final state is emphasized.Comment: Latex, 17 pages, 2 figures. The effects of the bacterial interaction with visible-light responsive titania photocatalyst on the bactericidal performance

    Get PDF
Bactericidal activity of traditional titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst is effective only upon irradiation by ultraviolet light, which restricts the potential applications of TiO2 for use in our living environments. Recently carbon-containing TiO2 was found to be photoactive at visible-light illumination that affords the potential to overcome this problem; although, the bactericidal activity of these photocatalysts is relatively lower than conventional disinfectants. Evidenced from scanning electron microscopy and confocal Raman spectral mapping analysis, we found the interaction with bacteria was significantly enhanced in these anatase/rutile mixed-phase carbon-containing TiO2. Bacteria-killing experiments indicate that a significantly higher proportion of all tested pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri and Acinetobacter baumannii, were eliminated by the new nanoparticle with higher bacterial interaction property. These findings suggest the created materials with high bacterial interaction ability might be a useful strategy to improve the antimicrobial activity of visible-light-activated TiO2

The Discrepancy Between tau and e+e- Spectral Functions Revisited and the Consequences for the Muon Magnetic Anomaly

We revisit the procedure for comparing the pi pi spectral function measured in tau decays to that obtained in e+e- annihilation. We re-examine the isospin-breaking corrections using new experimental and theoretical input, and find improved agreement between the tau- --> pi- pi0 nu_tau branching fraction measurement and its prediction using the isospin-breaking-corrected e+e- --> pi+pi- spectral function, though not resolving all discrepancies. We recompute the lowest order hadronic contributions to the muon g-2 using e+e- and tau data with the new corrections, and find a reduced difference between the two evaluations. The new tau-based estimate of the muon magnetic anomaly is found to be 1.9 standard deviations lower than the direct measurement.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
