[[abstract]]Three species of dried mushrooms are commercially available in Taiwan, namely Agaricus blazei (Brazilian mushroom), Agrocybe cylindracea (black popular mushroom) and Boletus edulis (king bolete), and their non-volatile taste components were studied. All mushrooms were high in contents of carbohydrate, crude fiber and protein but low in contents of crude ash and fat. Arabitol, myo-inositol, mannitol and trehalose were detected in these three mushrooms, whereas glucose was not found in B. edulis. Contents of total soluble sugars and polyols ranged from 150.33 to 225.08 mg/g. Total free amino acid contents were low in these three mushrooms and ranged from 8.97 to 14.91 mg/g. The contents of MSG-like components ranged from 1.24 to 4.40 mg/g were in the descending order of the A. blazei, A. cylindracea and B. edulis. Total 5'-nucleotides contents of A. blazei and A. cylindracea were higher than that of B. edulis whereas flavor 5'-nucleotides content of A. blazei was higher than those of A. cylindracea and B. edulis. Equivalent umami concentrations values in three mushrooms ranged from 10.46 to 135.90 g per 100 g. Overall, these three mushrooms possessed highly umami taste. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. [[abstract]]Three mushrooms, Clitocybe maxima, Pleurotus ferulae and Pleurotus ostreatus grey strain were used to study their flavour components and antioxidant properties. The volatile flavour components found comprised of six eight-membered carbon compounds and two aromatic compounds. The content total of soluble sugars and polyols was 125-270 mg/g. The content of monosoclium glutamate-like components was 1.76-8.89 mg/g. The contents of flavour 5'-nucleoticles ranged from 1.89 to 7.59 mg/g. Based on the results obtained, three mushrooms possessed highly intense umami taste. Ethanolic extracts were more effective in the inhibition of conjugated diene and scavenging ability on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals, whereas hot water extracts were more effective in the scavenging ability of hydroxyl radicals. EC50 values were less than 14 and 30 mg/ml for ethanolic and hot water extracts, respectively, indicating that the three mushrooms were relatively effective as they exhibited antioxidant properties, despite having scavenging abilities for hydroxyl radicals. Phenols were the major antioxidant components and the total contents were 5.10-11.1 mg gallic acid equivalents/g. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Does compensative subsidy alleviate pollutant emission and improve welfare under crossindustry pollution?

    Get PDF
This paper establishes a cross-industry pollution externality model under centralized labor union. In delineating the motivations of a benevolent government, it might be possible to tax part of the welfare gains and use the revenue to compensate the affected polluting industry for the damage costs, thereby improving welfare. We show that the magnitude of marginal pollution plays a critical role. When the marginal pollution is large, the government should tax the pollution firm to reduce the pollution. However, when the marginal pollution is small, the government should subsidize the polluted firm to increase output and enhance consumer surplus

The First Protocol Of Reaching Consensus Under Unreliable Mobile Edge Computing Paradigm

    Get PDF
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is an emerging technology that enables computing directly at the edge of the cloud computing network. Therefore, it is important that MEC is applied with reliable transmission. The problem of reaching consensus in the distributed system is one of the most important issues in designing a reliable transmission network. However, all previous protocols for the consensus problem are not suitable for an MEC paradigm. It is the first time an optimal protocol of reaching consensus is pro- posed for MEC paradigm. The protocol makes all fault-free nodes communicate with each other and collect the exchanged messages to decide a common value. Based on the common value, the protocol ensures all fault-free nodes reach consensus without the influence of unreliable transmission. Finally, we proved theoretically that the proposed protocol can tolerate the maximum number of faulty components and using only two rounds of message exchanges

S-allylcysteine Improves Blood Flow Recovery and Prevents Ischemic Injury by Augmenting Neovasculogenesis.

Studies suggest that a low level of circulating human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) is a risk factor for ischemic injury and coronary artery disease (CAD). Consumption of S-allylcysteine (SAC) is known to prevent CAD. However, the protective effects of SAC on the ischemic injury are not yet clear. In this study, we examined whether SAC could improve blood flow recovery in ischemic tissues through EPC-mediated neovasculogenesis. The results demonstrate that SAC significantly enhances the neovasculogenesis of EPCs in vitro. The molecular mechanisms for SAC enhancement of neovasculogenesis include the activation of Akt/endothelial nitric oxide synthase signaling cascades. SAC increased the expression of c-kit, β-catenin, cyclin D1, and Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) proteins in EPCs. Daily intake of SAC at dosages of 0.2 and 2 mg/kg body weight significantly enhanced c-kit protein levels in vivo. We conclude that dietary consumption of SAC improves blood flow recovery and prevents ischemic injury by inducing neovasculogenesis in experimental models

Caffeic Acid Derivatives Inhibit the Growth of Colon Cancer: Involvement of the PI3-K/Akt and AMPK Signaling Pathways

    Get PDF
The aberrant regulation of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinases (PI3-K)/Akt, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and mammalian target of rapamycin (m-TOR) signaling pathways in cancer has prompted significant interest in the suppression of these pathways to treat cancer. Caffeic acid (CA) has been reported to possess important anti-inflammatory actions. However, the molecular mechanisms by which CA derivatives including caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and caffeic acid phenylpropyl ester (CAPPE), exert inhibitory effects on the proliferation of human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells have yet to be elucidated

Prediction Primary Available Blend Biodiesel of Waste Oil from Aurantiochytrium sp. for General Diesel Engines

Chemical and enzyme transesterification were compared by discussing preliminary transesterification of waste oil of Aurantiochytrium sp., which was then used in transesterification for the primary available blend biodiesel for a general diesel engine in this study. We made progress on the winterized characteristics of the waste oil’s biodiesel of Aurantiochytrium sp. and its biodiesel, which included the reactivity parameters and properties. This approach led to the development of a novel idea for the evaluation of kinetic parameters of winterization, along with obtaining the suitable operation and storage conditions of biodiesel. Therefore, the waste oil of Aurantiochytrium sp. could be developed for biodiesel production and successfully made into a suitable blend diesel. Overall, we acquired the best condition of mixtures and the highly mixed rate of petrodiesel: biodiesel = 80 : 20 (activation energy of winterization 21.32 kJ/mol; onset temperature of winterization -4.15 °C; heat of combustion 43.15 MJ/kg; kinematic viscosity 3.51 mm2/s; flash point 67.5 °C), which was an appropriate blend biodiesel from the waste oil’s biodiesel of Aurantiochytrium sp.

Cordyceps militaris, a medicinal and edible mushroom, was used to ferment buckwheat and embryo rice by solid-state fermentation (SSF). Our aim was to investigate the effect of ultraviolet B (UVB) light irradiation on the content of vitamin D2 and biologically effective components, and antioxidant properties of buckwheat and embryo rice in SSF with C. militaris. Irradiated samples of buckwheat and embryo rice fermented by C. militaris had significantly increased vitamin D2 content, from 0-0.3 to 1.18-16.79 μg/g, while the increase in fresh embryo rice fermented by C. militaris was up to 16.79 μg/g. The content of adenosine, cordycepin and polysaccharide in irradiated dry samples fermented by C. militaris was 0.08 to 11.15 mg/g, higher than that of the irradiated fresh samples fermented by C. militaris (0.07–8.40 mg/g). Samples fermented by C. militaris had lower EC50 values and higher content of antioxidants than did unfermented samples. When the solid-state fermented sample was irradiated with UVB light, the content of biologically effective and antioxidant components and antioxidant property of sample decreased. However, it still contained enough of these biologically effective and antioxidant components
