Report on the Part Played by the Winnipeg Grenadiers in the Defence of Hong Kong

The writer commences this report knowing full well that a report containing criticisms or accusations is bound to be read with a certain amount of skepticism particularly if it is written in opposition to an official report submitted by a much higher authority. Two important factors have decided me to compile this report without further delay and while still a prisoner of war and subject to search at any time by the Japanese authorities (although they have not done so as yet). The first and most urgent one is the necessity for a very accurate recording of events as they occurred, this would not have been so important but for the fact that it has become very evident that we (The Canadian Forces) are being blamed by the Imperial troops for the early fall of Hong Kong. And while it is not definitely known that the Imperial staff are going to adapt this attitude in their official report every precaution must be taken to ensure that any attempt to make ‘C Force (Canadians) the scape goat is adequately challenged by a submission of the facts while they are still fresh in the memory. 10-04 "Buyer Power in U.S. Hog Markets: A Critical Review of the Literature"

The U.S. Departments of Justice and Agriculture have focused attention recently on rising levels of corporate concentration in agricultural markets and the challenges that may pose to U.S. anti-trust enforcement and agricultural policies. Both agencies have raised particular concerns about dominant firms’ exercise of buyer power over farmers, especially in livestock markets controlled by a shrinking number of large multinational meat packers. U.S. hog markets have undergone rapid concentration in the last 25 years, with the top four packers now controlling two-thirds of the market and Smithfield Foods, the industry leader, commanding 31 percent. Despite the rapid structural changes in the U.S. hog industry, the literature on buyer power in hog markets is quite limited. In this paper, we review the available literature, which has been generally presented as demonstrating that buyer power is not a significant problem. We find that interpretation to be poorly justified. Researchers have found well-documented evidence of market power on both the seller and the buyer sides of the market, though the studies have been less clear on the specific causes. Mirroring prevailing practices in Justice Department merger reviews, researchers have often discounted buyer power using methodologies more appropriate to seller power, then dismissed findings of seller power by pointing to offsetting “efficiency gains” from concentration. Yet such apparent efficiency gains in seller markets can include reductions in the prices concentrated firms pay for animals through their exercise of buyer power. We also raise the question of how buyer power in concentrated retail markets may compound the exercise of buyer power by packers. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for further research, including the refinement of methodologies for the study of buyer power, and an assessment of proposed new USDA regulations on packer buying practices.

A Rhetorical Analysis of Lincoln, the First American, a Speech by Franklin Baldwin Wiley

Purpose of the Study The purpose of this study was to analyze the speech Lincoln, The First American given on February 12, 1913 by Franklin Baldwin Wiley. Hypothesis It was hypothesized that a rhetorical analysis of Lincoln, The First American would give significant rhetorical and historical insights into Lincoln, into Franklin Baldwin Wiley, and into the times of both men. Materials This study primarily relied on the written works of Franklin Baldwin Wiley. Appendix A contains a copy of the original transcript of the speech Lincoln, The First American. This speech was selected because of its rhetorical-historical value. Methodology This paper applied a methodology created by B. F. McClerren and demonstrated in his rhetorical analysis: The Rhetoric of Abortion: a Weaverian Method of Analysis, (unpublished manuscript, Eastern Illinois University, 1989). This methodology provided for three basic identifications: emotive language, modes of argument, and philosophical frameworks. Conclusion The hypothesis was supported. The analysis revealed that Franklin Baldwin Wiley and Abraham Lincoln artistically marshaled language and argument to responsibly and clearly indicate their respective philosophical frameworks. The following suggestions for further study using the same methodology are offered: 1. Study the speeches of Franklin Baldwin Wiley on other subjects. 2. Study the rhetoric and philosophy of other speakers and writers during the time of Franklin Baldwin Wiley. 3. Study the rhetoric and philosophy of other speakers and writers during the time of Lincoln. 4. Study and compare the rhetoric and philosophy of early national, later national, and contemporary speakers

The relationship between trapezium union, CMC joint instability and function following pollicisation

Forty-four pollicisations were assessed radiologically for union and stability of the trapezium as well as for stability of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. These parameters were compared with conventional clinical measures for strength, range of motion and function. The union rate of the trapezium was 82%. For those with non-union, the relative risk of trapezial instability was 35.0. Patients with trapezial union demonstrated significantly higher grip strength. For those with union, the relative risk of instability at the CMC joint was 1.4. Those with a stable CMC joint demonstrated significantly higher grip strength and functional results. This study suggests that the aim of obtaining union of the new trapezium is of benefit in the procedure of pollicisation

Superoxide Dismutase 1 in Health and Disease: How a Frontline Antioxidant Becomes Neurotoxic.

Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is a frontline antioxidant enzyme catalysing superoxide breakdown and is important for most forms of eukaryotic life. The evolution of aerobic respiration by mitochondria increased cellular production of superoxide, resulting in an increased reliance upon SOD1. Consistent with the importance of SOD1 for cellular health, many human diseases of the central nervous system involve perturbations in SOD1 biology. But far from providing a simple demonstration of how disease arises from SOD1 loss-of-function, attempts to elucidate pathways by which atypical SOD1 biology leads to neurodegeneration have revealed unexpectedly complex molecular characteristics delineating healthy, functional SOD1 protein from that which likely contributes to central nervous system disease. Judgements of Solomon: anxieties and defences of social workers involved in care proceedings

Evidence from focus group discussions with social workers in child care and child protection was collected for a research project exploring decision-making in care proceedings and seeking a better understanding of the causes of delay in the process. Here this material is used to examine social workers’ feelings about their work and to explore the anxieties they expressed. Isabel Menzies’s work on containing anxiety in institutions is used to provide a conceptual framework for thinking about the ways in which individuals’ unconscious defences against anxiety may affect the structure, policies and practices of the organization in which they work. It is suggested that this dimension needs to be taken into account in understanding difficulties which arise in putting policy into practice
