    Association of fruit and vegetable intakes with bone mineral density in elderly women

    Različite se bolesti i stanja povezuju s neadekvatnom prehranom, uključujući i smanjenu mineralnu gustoću kosti (BMD), odnosno osteoporozu i osteopeniju. Pravilna i uravnotežena prehrana uključuje adekvatnu konzumaciju voća i povrća, pa je cilj ovoga rada bio utvrditi ima li unos voća i povrća utjecaja na BMD u žena starije dobi. Istraživanje je obuhvatilo 60 ispitanica u dobi od 65 do 90 godina, a metodom 24-h prisjećanja unosa hrane i pića procijenjen je prosječan dnevni unos voća i povrća te unos mikronutrijenata važnih za zdavlje kosti. Utvrđeni su antropometrijski (tjelesna masa, tjelesna visina, udjel masnog tkiva) i biokemijski parametri (folat u serumu, folat u eritrocitima i vitamin D), a mineralna gustoća kosti dobivena je metodom dvoenergetske apsorpciometrije X-zraka. Rezultati pokazuju da nema statistički značajne korelacije između unos voća i povrća i BMD-a u starijih žena (pĖƒ0,05).Utvrđena je statistički značajna pozitivna korelacija između prosječnog dnevnog unosa vitamina D i BMD-a kralježnice (p<0,05). Dobiveni rezultati nisu pokazali da veći unos voća i povrća doprinosi većoj mineralnoj gustoći kostiju.Different diseases and conditions are associated with inadequate diet including also the decline in bone mineral density (BMD). Healthy and balanced diet includes adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables, so the aim of this study was to determine if fruit and vegetable intakes are associated with bone mineral density in elderly women. Subjects were 60 women 65 to 90 years of age. The 24-hour recall estimates the average daily fruit and vegetable intakes and intake of micronutrients important for bone health. Anthropometric parameters (body weight, body height, % of body fat) and biochemical parameters (serum folate, folate in erythrocytes and serum vitamin D) were determined. BMD was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). There was no significant correlation between fruit and vegetable intakes and BMD in elderly women(pĖƒ0,05). Significant positive correlation was determined between average daily vitamin D intake and BMD of lumbar spine (p<0,05). These results did not show that adequate fruit and vegetable intakes contribute to maintenance of BMD
