A note on price-taking and price-making behaviours in general equilibrium oligopoly models
This paper explores the rationale of price-taking and price-making behaviours in the context of Walrasian and Cournotian pure exchange economies. Beside the influence of the number of agents, we underline the role of the structure of preferences. Through three equilibrium variations of the same basic economy, we obtain several results about price manipulation, about asymptotic identifications for large economies and for degenerate preferences, and about welfare comparisons. Perfect competition does not only correspond to the case of large economies, but may also concern economies where market powers are more or less equivalent.Cournot-Walras equilibria, market power, perfect competition
Preferences, market power and oligopolistic competition: an example
This paper studies the way market power operates under symmetric oligopoly equilibrium. Stressing the role of preferences and focusing on price manipulation, four results are obtained about asymptotic identifications (for degenerate preferences and large economies) and about welfare configurations.Pure exchange, strategic interactions
Rational choice theory stretches out in two complementary directions. Its contextual and extensive application fills and then overflows the strict domain of substantive economy, eventually identifying any human choice with an economic decision. Its structural and intensive sophistication surpasses the basic framework of choice without uncertainty to treat the exogenous and endogenous forms of uncertainty. These two forms of progress, thematic and analytical, come together to ensure the general expansion of the field of rational choice. Beyond its advantages and achievements, this attempt at universal âeconomizationâ faces limits in the two directions of its development. Contextually, the logic of instrumental choice is unable to grasp deontological morals and axiological rationality. And structurally, the logistics of rational choice is inoperative faced with a radically uncertain environment and/or a one-on-one interaction with another person
Real and Monetary Approach to the Handcraft Economy
The handcraft market represents the social division of work because it is referred to the exchange between separated producers; unlike pure exchange and capitalist economies, the handcraft economy integrates production but gets rid off the technical division of work. This paper displays both real and monetary models of the handcraft market where each consumer-producer generalist, maximizes his utility function. In the first model a .general market economy. arises, which is related to relative equilibrium prices, whereas in the second one, the monetary model, a .particular market economy. arises, which is linked to absolute disequilibrium prices.prices, equilibrium, money, pricing, heterodoxy
Oligopoly equilibria âĂ la Stackelbergâ in pure exchange economies
International audienceThis paper introduces two equilibrium concepts which extend the notion of Stackelberg competition to cover a general equilibrium framework. From the benchmarks of Cournot-Walras economies and of strategic market games, the introduction of an active leader modifies the working of market power and the configuration of strategic interactions. In the context of a simple pure exchange economy, asymptotic identification and welfare results are thus obtained, about Stackelberg general equilibria, compared to Cournot general equilibria and to the competitive equilibrium
