    The Potential of Beauveria against Root Mealybugs Formiccoccus sp. (Homoptera: Pseudococidae) Black Pepper in Dak Lak Province of Vietnam

    Root mealybugs Formicoccus sp.(Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) currently emerge as an economically important soil-borne insect pest in the production of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) in Dak Lak province of Vietnam. Entomopathogenic fungi can be used in agricultural production as feasible safe biocontrol agents and plant growth promoters. This study aimed to isolate, select and identify the local Beauveria sp. strains from the black pepper fields, as well as evaluate the effects of the selected strains on the growth of black pepper. The results showed that the frequency of positive Beauveria sp. soil samples collected from organic black pepper fields was significantly higher than that from conventional black pepper fields. Twenty-one Beauveria sp. strains in black pepper organic fields and four Beauveria sp. strains in black pepper conventional fields were successfully isolated, among them, the Beauveria bassiana BB1 was examined and evaluated for its biocontrol potential against Formicoccus sp. and its ability to promote the growth of black pepper seedlings. In the laboratory experiments, the mortality of both adults and first instar nymph root mealybugs Formicoccus sp. caused by B. bassiana BB1 culminated 100% at 21 days after treatments. In the nethouse, at 6 months after treatment, the efficacy of B. bassiana BB1 against black pepper root mealybugs reached 99.18%. The levels of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves of the black pepper seedlings increased about 2 times compared to the control. Moreover, B. bassiana BB1 strain also remarkably promoted the growth of the black pepper seedlings under the nethouse conditions

    Microfluidic Chip for Trapping Magnetic Nanoparticles and Heating in Terms of Biological Analysis

    In this study, we reported the results of the design and the fabrication a planar coil in copper (square, a = 10 mm, 15mm high, 90 turns), these planar coils were integrated in a microfluidic chip for trapping magnetic nanoparticles and local heating applications. A small thermocouple (type K, 1 mm tip size) was put directly on top of the micro-channel in poly(dimethyl-siloxane) in order to measure the temperature inside the channel during applying current. The design of planar coils was based on optimizing the results of the magnetic calculation. The most suitable value of the magnetic field generated by the coil was calculated by ANSYSÂź software corresponded to the different distances from the coil surface to the micro-channel bottom (magnetic field strength Hmax = 825 A/m). The magnetic filed and heating relationship was balanced in order to manipulating the trapping magnetic nanoparticles and heating process. This design of the microfluidic chip can be used to develop a complex microfluidic chip using magnetic nanoparticles

    Effect of Polypyrrole on the Electrical, Dielectric and Mechanical Properties of Waterborne Epoxy Coatings

    In this context, conducting composite based on waterborne epoxy system and polypyrrole (PPy) was investigated. The polypyrrole was synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization. Its morphology and chemical structure were confirmed by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Then, PPy was well-dispersed in the epoxy coating and had a good compatibility with the matrix. The effects of PPy on dielectric, electrical and mechanical properties of epoxy/PPy composites was examined. The dielectric constant and electrical conductivity of the coatings increased with addition of PPy fillers. Over to 15 wt. % of PPy loading, the volume resistivity of samples slightly decreased from 6.7 × 1010 to 1.5 × 1010 Ω cm. In contrast, the presence of PPy diminished both impact and abrasion resistance of the epoxy/PPy composites, down to 160 kg cm and 10.2 L/mil, respectively, but they stayed acceptable for the coatings. The results reveal that the epoxy containing polypyrrole is suitable for various electrical and dielectric applications

    Microscopic Observation Drug Susceptibility Assay (MODS) for Early Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in Children

    MODS is a novel liquid culture based technique that has been shown to be effective and rapid for early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). We evaluated the MODS assay for diagnosis of TB in children in Viet Nam. 217 consecutive samples including sputum (n = 132), gastric fluid (n = 50), CSF (n = 32) and pleural fluid (n = 3) collected from 96 children with suspected TB, were tested by smear, MODS and MGIT. When test results were aggregated by patient, the sensitivity and specificity of smear, MGIT and MODS against “clinical diagnosis” (confirmed and probable groups) as the gold standard were 28.2% and 100%, 42.3% and 100%, 39.7% and 94.4%, respectively. The sensitivity of MGIT and MODS was not significantly different in this analysis (P = 0.5), but MGIT was more sensitive than MODS when analysed on the sample level using a marginal model (P = 0.03). The median time to detection of MODS and MGIT were 8 days and 13 days, respectively, and the time to detection was significantly shorter for MODS in samples where both tests were positive (P<0.001). An analysis of time-dependent sensitivity showed that the detection rates were significantly higher for MODS than for MGIT by day 7 or day 14 (P<0.001 and P = 0.04), respectively.     In this study, an acetylcholinesterase enzyme biosensor was developed based on a bilayer of poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene) and polypyrrole nanowire structures modifying carbon screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). A polypyrrole nanowire inner layer was electrodeposited on the surface of SPEs to enhance conductivity and specific areas. A poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene) outer layer was used for immobilizing acetylcholinesterase through glutaraldehyde agent. On the basis of the inhibition of organophosphate pesticides on the enzymatic activity of acetylcholinesterase enzyme, the acetylcholinesterase-immobilized bilayer of the conductive polymer electrode was designed for electrochemical determination of trichlorfon insecticide, one of the popular organophosphate pesticides.     Potential application of rhizobacteria isolated from the Central Highland of Vietnam as an effective biocontrol agent of robusta coffee nematodes and as a bio-fertilizer

    [[abstract]]Robusta coffee is a major commercial crop in the Central Highland of Vietnam with high economic and export value. However, this crop is adversely affected by various pathogens, particularly nematodes. This study aimed to screen active anti-nematode rhizobacterial strains for sustainable coffee production. Among more than 200 isolates, the isolate TUN03 demonstrated efficient biocontrol with nearly 100% mortality of J2 coffee nematodes Meloidogyne spp. and 84% inhibition of nematode egg hatching. This active strain was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa TUN03 based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analysis. In greenhouse tests, the strain TUN03 significantly reduced the coffee nematode population in the rhizome-soil with an 83.23% inhibition rate and showed plant growth-promoting effects. Notably, this is the first report of the nematicidal effect of P. aeruginosa against coffee nematodes. This potent strain further showed an antifungal effect against various crop-pathogenic fungi and was found to be the most effective against Fusarium solani F04 (isolated from coffee roots) with a 70.51% inhibition rate. In addition, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that this bacterial strain also secretes plant growth regulators including indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), kinetin, and zeatin in significant amounts of 100, 2700, 37, and 9.5 ”g/mL, respectively.     The development of purpose-built office market in Malaysia is primarily resolved by a supplydemand market. Since the office market in Malaysia has displayed significance improvement due to increasing level of competitiveness, many characteristics of purpose-built office have appeared and become prominent during the process of assessment. These characteristics were generally used as indicators in property valuation, building performance as well as office market appraisal. Based on these characteristics, property market participants can evaluate their property proficiently based on their requirements, especially in decision making during business planning, investment or property management. Technology growth and national policy also gave contribution factors on revealing newly characteristics of purpose-built office such as green building, intelligent building and sustainable development model. The purpose of this article is to identify suitable characteristics of purpose-built office that can be used in Malaysia. Integral to achieving this objective, exploration on purpose built office characteristics in a global and local context will be reconsidered. As a result, a building and locational framework of purpose-built office’s characteristics in Malaysia will be diagnosed and verified appropriately
