Informing High School Choices: The Progress & Challenges of Small High Schools in Philadelphia
In the School District of Philadelphia in 2007-08, almost one third of high school students attend one of the district's 32 small high schools. Of these, 26 have been newly created or significantly changed since 2002. These small schools have a range of admissions criteria with two thirds being selective admission and one third neighborhood high schools. Along with this increase in high school options has been a growing interest in high school choice, with 73% of eighth graders applying to high schools outside their neighborhood in 2006. However, within the School District of Philadelphia, there is only one 'choice'-the neighborhood high school-for the 51% of rising ninth graders who try to exercise choice but are not accepted to any of their preferred choices. For those students who do attend small high schools, our research suggests that this more personalized environment is demonstrating promising outcomes with regard to improved school climate, improved interpersonal relationships between adults and students and student-to-student, and students' perceptions of their school experience. The small high school model is particularly promising for neighborhood high schools where positive relationships may help stem high dropout rates. Among our five case study high schools, the one small neighborhood high school reported great improvements in climate compared to its previous large configuration, although some lingering climate challenges remained. While positive relationships and improved climate create the conditions for learning, principals and teachers at all five case study schools reported that more was needed to develop and maintain a rigorous academic program for all students. They described the need for common faculty planning time to strengthen their academic program and more flexibility and resources to meet the unique staffing and rostering challenges of small high schools
Assessing the potential for reopening a building stone quarry : Newbigging Sandstone Quarry, Fife
Newbigging Sandstone Quarry in Fife is one of a number of former quarries in the Burntisland-
Aberdour district which exploited the pale-coloured Grange Sandstone from Lower
Carboniferous rocks. The quarry supplied building stone from the late 19th century, working
intermittently from 1914 until closure in 1937, and again when reopened in the 1970s to the
1990s. The stone was primarily used locally and to supply the nearby markets in the Scottish
Central Belt.
Historical evidence indicates that prior to sandstone extraction, the area was dominated by largescale
quarrying and mining of limestone, and substantial sandstone quarrying is likely to have
begun after the arrival of the main railway line in 1890. It is probable that removal of the
sandstone was directly associated with limestone exploitation, and that the quarried sandstone
was effectively a by-product of limestone production. Sandstone extraction was probably viable
due to the existing limestone quarry infrastructure (workforce, equipment, transportation) and the
high demand for building stone in Central Scotland in the late 19th century.
The geology within Newbigging Sandstone Quarry is dominated by thick-bedded uniform
sandstone with a wide joint spacing, well-suited for obtaining large blocks. However, a
mudstone (shale) band is likely to be present within a few metres of the principal (north) face of
the quarry, around which the sandstone bed thickness and quality is likely to decrease. The
mudstone bed forms a plane sloping at a shallow angle to the north, so that expansion of the
quarry in this direction is likely to encounter a considerable volume of poor quality stone.
Additionally, an east-west trending fault is present approximately 100 metres north of the quarry
face, which is also likely to be associated with poor quality (fractured) stone
Making Rasch decisions: the use of Rasch analysis in the construction of preference based health related quality of life instruments
Objective: To set out the methodological process for using Rasch analysis alongside traditional psychometric methods in the development of a health state classification that is amenable to valuation. Methods: The overactive bladder questionnaire is used to illustrate a four step process for deriving a reduced health state classification from an existing nonpreference based health related quality of life instrument. Step I excludes items that do not meet the initial validation process and step II uses criteria based on Rasch analysis and psychometric testing to select the final items for the health state classification. In step III, item levels are examined and Rasch analysis is used to explore the possibility of reducing the number of item levels. Step IV repeats steps I to III on alternative data sets in order to validate the selection of items for the health state classification. Conclusions: The techniques described enable the construction of a health state classification amenable for valuation exercises that will allow the derivation of preference weights. Thus, the health related quality of life of patients with conditions, like overactive bladder, can be valued and quality adjustment weights such as quality adjusted life years derived.Rasch analysis; health related quality of life; condition specific measure; preference-based measures; overactive bladder syndrome
Use of an index to reflect the aggregate burden of long-term exposure to criteria air pollutants in the United States.
Air pollution control in the United States for five common pollutants--particulate matter, ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide--is based partly on the attainment of ambient air quality standards that represent a level of air pollution regarded as safe. Regulatory and health agencies often focus on whether standards for short periods are attained; the number of days that standards are exceeded is used to track progress. Efforts to explain air pollution to the public often incorporate an air quality index that represents daily concentrations of pollutants. While effects of short-term exposures have been emphasized, research shows that long-term exposures to lower concentrations of air pollutants can also result in adverse health effects. We developed an aggregate index that represents long-term exposure to these pollutants, using 1995 monitoring data for metropolitan areas obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Aerometric Information Retrieval System. We compared the ranking of metropolitan areas under the proposed aggregate index with the ranking of areas by the number of days that short-term standards were exceeded. The geographic areas with the highest burden of long-term exposures are not, in all cases, the same as those with the most days that exceeded a short-term standard. We believe that an aggregate index of long-term air pollution offers an informative addition to the principal approaches currently used to describe air pollution exposures; further work on an aggregate index representing long-term exposure to air pollutants is warranted
Ageing makes us dyslexic
Background: The effects of typical ageing on spoken language are well known: word production is disproportionately affected while syntactic processing is relatively well preserved. Little is known, however, about how ageing affects reading.Aims: What effect does ageing have on written language processing? In particular, how does it affect our ability to read words? How does it affect phonological awareness (our ability to manipulate the sounds of our language)?Methods & Procedures: We tested 14 people with Parkinson's disease (PD), 14 typically ageing adults (TAA), and 14 healthy younger adults on a range of background neuropsychological tests and tests of phonological awareness. We then carried out an oral naming experiment where we manipulated consistency, and a nonword repetition task where we manipulated the word-likeness of the nonwords.Outcomes & Results: We find that normal ageing causes individuals to become mildly phonologically dyslexic in that people have difficulty pronouncing nonwords. People with Parkinson's disease perform particularly poorly on language tasks involving oral naming and metalinguistic processing. We also find that ageing causes difficulty in repeating nonwords. We show that these problems are associated with a more general difficulty in processing phonological information, supporting the idea that language difficulties, including poorer reading in older age, can result from a general phonological deficit.Conclusions: We suggest that neurally this age-induced dyslexia is associated with frontal deterioration (and perhaps deterioration in other regions) and cognitively to the loss of executive processes that enable us to manipulate spoken and written language. A cross-sectional study of predatory publishing emails received by career development grant awardees
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the scope of academic spam emails (ASEs) among career development grant awardees and the factors associated with the amount of time spent addressing them.
DESIGN:
A cross-sectional survey of career development grant investigators via an anonymous online survey was conducted. In addition to demographic and professional information, we asked investigators to report the number of ASEs received each day, how they determined whether these emails were spam and time they spent per day addressing them. We used bivariate analysis to assess factors associated with the amount of time spent on ASEs.
SETTING:
An online survey sent via email on three separate occasions between November and December 2016.
PARTICIPANTS:
All National Institutes of Health career development awardees funded in the 2015 fiscal year.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
Factors associated with the amount of time spent addressing ASEs.
RESULTS:
A total of 3492 surveys were emailed, of which 206 (5.9%) were returned as undeliverable and 96 (2.7%) reported an out-of-office message; our overall response rate was 22.3% (n=733). All respondents reported receiving ASEs, with the majority (54.4%) receiving between 1 and 10 per day and spending between 1 and 10 min each day evaluating them. The amount of time respondents reported spending on ASEs was associated with the number of peer-reviewed journal articles authored (p<0.001), a history of publishing in open access format (p<0.01), the total number of ASEs received (p<0.001) and a feeling of having missed opportunities due to ignoring these emails (p=0.04).
CONCLUSIONS:
ASEs are a common distraction for career development grantees that may impact faculty productivity. There is an urgent need to mitigate this growing problem
