    Identification of Clusters that Condition Resistance to Anthracnose in the Common Bean Differential Cultivars AB136 and MDRK.

    The correct identification of the anthracnose resistance systems present in the common bean cultivars AB136 and MDRK is important because both are included in the set of 12 differential cultivars proposed for use in classifying the races of the anthracnose causal agent, Colletrotrichum lindemuthianum. In this work, the responses against seven C. lindemuthianum races were analyzed in a recombinant inbred line population derived from the cross AB136 × MDRK. A genetic linkage map of 100 molecular markers distributed across the 11 bean chromosomes was developed in this population to locate the gene or genes conferring resistance against each race, based on linkage analyses and χ2tests of independence. The identified anthracnose resistance genes were organized in clusters. Two clusters were found in AB136: one located on linkage group Pv07, which corresponds to the anthracnose resistance cluster Co-5, and the other located at the end of linkage group Pv11, which corresponds to the Co-2 cluster. The presence of resistance genes at the Co-5 cluster in AB136 was validated through an allelism test conducted in the F2population TU × AB136. The presence of resistance genes at the Co-2 cluster in AB136 was validated through genetic dissection using the F2:3population ABM3 × MDRK, in which it was directly mapped to a genomic position between 46.01 and 47.77 Mb of chromosome Pv11. In MDRK, two independent clusters were identified: one located on linkage group Pv01, corresponding to the Co-1 cluster, and the second located on LG Pv04, corresponding to the Co-3 cluster. This report enhances the understanding of the race-specific Phaseolus vulgaris–C. lindemuthianum interactions and will be useful in breeding programs

    Digital storytelling, uma exploração prática : seguindo os passos de três gerações de migrantes

    This research aims to recognize the contemporary context of digital storytelling, through an exploratory practice in communication design. In a constantly updated territory, we tried to stabilize the terminology through its historical contextualization and the recognition of current practices in the digital environment, often rooted in journalistic practices. We analyze its main actors, the economic conditions in which they operate, and the future directions of the sector, in a context marked by the economic crisis, but also by a constant reformulation of their models of action and representation. The practice of photojournalism is also addressed as a precursor to a practice of visual journalism from which the examples of digital storytelling emerge. To define the role of the communication designer in the creation of digital storytelling artifacts, we start from the premise of Jan van Toorn: the designer as a visual journalist. The practical component of the dissertation – the project Tras los pasos – aims to recognize the current condition of digital storytelling, to explore its limits and potentialities in the web environment, as well as to identify the role of the communication designer in the elaboration of multimedia narratives. Tras los pasos presents a story of migration of three generations within the same family. From this practical exploration and thanks to the available digital means (both at the level of the design, as well as the circulation and reception of the object), it is concluded that complex, engaging and immersive audiovisual stories, can be developed by authors with very diverse formation and independently of the journalistic industry. Throughout the research, which was marked by a close relationship between theory and practice, we have found a field that slowly attempts to free itself from the language and processes of the printed world, and to redefine itself in the digital environment, revealing a disruptive, ever-changing contex

    Herein, we report a photoredox nucleophilic (radio)­fluorination using TEMPO-derived alkoxyamines, a class of substrates accessible in a single step from a diversity of readily available carboxylic acids, halides, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, boron reagents, and C–H bonds. This mild and versatile one-electron pathway affords radiolabeled aliphatic fluorides that are typically inaccessible applying conventional nucleophilic substitution technologies due to insufficient reactivity and competitive elimination. Automation of this photoredox process is also demonstrated with a user-friendly and commercially available photoredox flow reactor and radiosynthetic platform, therefore expediting access to labeled aliphatic fluorides in high molar activity (A m ) for (pre)­clinical evaluation

    Re-imagining Brazilian Portuguese IPA: A practical guide utilizing Paulo Maron’s new opera Lampião

    How often have North American singers considered singing art songs or opera arias in Brazilian Portuguese? How many Brazilian Opera composers do voice students and faculty outside of Brazil know? The lack of language familiarity of Brazilian Portuguese is a barrier to Brazilian vocal music’s accessibility and performance. And the challenging learning curve may contribute to the lack of interest non-native speakers may have toward Brazilian classical music. To help address this problem, the author decided to promote the accessibility of the Brazilian Portuguese repertoire of vocal music by re-imagining/simplifying sections of the Brazilian Portuguese IPA table. This simplified table coalesces phonemes from the Italian, French, and North American English IPA tables and diction concomitantly to a significant reduction of symbols compared to the Brazilian Portuguese IPA established in 2005. This reflective guide will apply practically the concepts and rules from this simplified Brazilian Portuguese IPA table through the transcription of the one act opera Lampião written by Brazilian composer Paulo Maron. In order to contextualize Brazilian Portuguese vocal music and Maron’s opera, a brief overview of Brazilian music, language and culture will contextualize elements that introduce North American anglophone singers to elements that are important to the performance of Brazilian vocal music and the Brazilian Portuguese texts they employ. This guide is universally applicable and directed to anyone working with music students or to the students themselves for private study. It is the author’s hope that this re-imagined/simplified Brazilian Portuguese IPA table will facilitate the engagement and performance of Brazilian Art Song and hopefully the production of Brazilian operas outside of Brazil
